Book excerpt: Midland Red in Retrospect covers the period during the 1960s when the Midland Red bus company dominated the Midlands, operating the lions share of the bus services and also operated express coach services from the Midlands to London and other locations. Like London Transport, Midland Red had a very distinctive image and had its own fleet of vehicles designed exclusively for its operations. This volume is written by someone who worked for the company during this period and reflects the color and atmosphere of this much loved and well remembered bus operator. Sadly the author passed away in September 2020, before the book was published and this volume of Midland Red bus pictures is a tribute to him.

Book Synopsis Motor Coaches and Charabancs by : James Taylor
Download or read book Motor Coaches and Charabancs written by James Taylor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coach – distinguished from the bus by its use for longer-haul and more comfortable trips – has a long and august history. Its origins lie in the charabanc, a long open-topped vehicle used to transport passengers on works outings and pleasure excursions. Over time, coaches came to be enclosed and fitted with more comfortable seating and higher-quality bodywork than the charabancs and the buses used on shorter routes. By the 1960s and 1970s on-board toilets began to be fitted, and despite a decline due to private car ownership, coach travel remains popular, with Wi-Fi, electric sockets and even video screens now built in. This colourful introduction explains the development of motor coach design and the main coach manufacturers, models and operators, offering a fascinating insight into the history of the nation's most popular vehicles.

Book Synopsis British Independent Bus and Coach Operators by : Jim Blake
Download or read book British Independent Bus and Coach Operators written by Jim Blake and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s, a large number of independent bus and coach fleets existed, which varied enormously in size and scope of operation. They ranged from major operators such as Barton Transport (Nottinghamshire); Lancashire United and West Riding who operated stage carriage services as well as coach fleets; or Wallace Arnold Tours of Leeds, a major coach touring company in Britain and Continental Europe; to small operators who possessed just a handful of vehicles. The latter were sometimes involved only in private hire work, for such things as outings to sporting events or theaters, school or industrial contracts or often a combination of both. Smaller operators were based throughout the country, sometimes in tiny villages but also in the heart of large cities. Often the smaller operators bought redundant buses and coaches from major operators, whether BET, BTC (Tilling) or municipal concerns, or London Transport. Many got bargains from the latter, with surplus RT and RTL double-deckers sold following the disastrous bus strike and service cuts of 1958. Conversely, redundant vehicles bought by independent fleets often brought types that came from as far away as Scotland to London and the south east. In the 1960s, the oldest buses and coaches with independent fleets were those employed on school or industrial contracts. These were not subject to the rigorous tests governing those carrying fare-paying passengers, so could be kept going until they were literally falling apart! These were known as ‘non-PSVs’, i.e. non-public service vehicles. On the other hand, some very small independent fleets, often with the title ‘Luxury Coaches’, took great pride in their fleets. They would purchase new coaches every two or three years and keep them in immaculate condition. The net result was that British independent bus and coach operators in the 1960s had a fascinating variety of chassis and body makes and styles, as well as liveries. This book shows many of these as they were between fifty and sixty years ago.
