Book Synopsis Middlesbrough at War 1939–45 by : Craig Armstrong
Download or read book Middlesbrough at War 1939–45 written by Craig Armstrong and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middlesbrough was of vital importance to Britain’s war effort. The town, and its surrounding area, contained a number of vital industries including shipbuilding, chemicals, iron, steel and other metals, and engineering, as well as a joinery firm that played a leading role in the wartime aviation industry. The ICI plant at nearby Billingham also played a leading role in the creation of petrochemicals and explosives. As with many communities, the start of the war saw Middlesbrough faced with hastily having to bring its Air Raid Precautions and civil defense services up to full strength. With its strategic importance it was believed that Middlesbrough would be an obvious target for the Luftwaffe. As a result, schoolchildren and other vulnerable people were evacuated from the town at the very start of the war in a scheme that did not prove entirely successful. Middlesbrough became the first built-up urban area in mainland Britain to be bombed. In the event, Middlesbrough was raided periodically throughout the war with the worst coming on the night of 25/26 July 1942, when waves of Luftwaffe bombers dropped almost 30 tons of bombs on the town. The raid killed sixteen people and caused very extensive property damage. Meanwhile, just days later, bombs fell on the town’s railway station as a train was waiting at the platform there. The pictures of the resulting damage were wired around the world.

Book excerpt: There has been a recent revival of interest in the work of Polish film director Walerian Borowczyk, a label-defying auteur and “escape artist” if there ever was one. This collection serves as an introduction and a guide to Borowczyk’s complex and ambiguous body of work, including panoramic views of the director’s output, focused studies of particular movies, and more personal, impressionistic pieces. Taken together, these contributions comprise a wide-ranging survey that is markedly experimental in character, allowing scholars to gain insight into previously unnoticed aspects of Borowczyk’s oeuvre.

Book Synopsis Transporter Bridges by : John Hannavy
Download or read book Transporter Bridges written by John Hannavy and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of original and historic photographs captures the story of the ingenious bridges that carried us from the Victorian era into modern times. With their moveable platforms designed to traverse busy waterways, Transporter Bridges served a brief but vital need from the late 19th century into the early 20th. Though many were planned, the huge increase in road transport quickly rendered them obsolete. In the end, fewer than thirty were ever completed across the world, with only nine still standing in their original form. But the transporter bridge appears to be entering a renaissance. In France and Argentina, restoration efforts are bringing life back to some of the original bridges. Meanwhile, proposals exist for three new bridges across France—at Nantes, Marseille and Brest—to replace some of those lost during and after the Second World War. This illustrated history captures the beauty of transporter bridges through hundreds of color photographs. The author combines his own modern images with many historic photographs and postcards chronicling the construction and operation of these unusual structures.
