Book excerpt: An exceeding number of studies have been found on cooperative learning and its effect on students' social development. Cooperative learning is supported by many teachers and a vast amount of research has identified it as a learning strategy to help students acquire appropriate social skills in addition to experiencing academic success. This research study was conducted in a suburban township in Middlesex County, New Jersey with a population of 46,756 as found by Census Bureau, (2000). Ten special education teachers who teach resource center classes and thirty-seven sixth and seventh grade resource center students from those classes were surveyed on their understanding and utilization of cooperative learning strategies in a resource center class and its perceived effects on students' social development. Teachers were surveyed on their understanding and utilization of cooperative learning strategies as well as their perception of students' social skills and the benefits cooperative learning has on students' social development. Students were surveyed on their understanding of cooperative learning and awareness of cooperative learning strategies being used in their resource classrooms in addition to their view of their social and cooperative abilities. Teachers' level of training in cooperative learning strategies as compared with the limited use of formal cooperative learning models was documented in this study through teacher and student surveys. Recommendations include teachers' utilization of more formal cooperative learning models. In addition, teachers should be trained and monitored in the use of cooperative learning strategies in the classroom. If students are expected to cooperate with others once they exit school and enter the workplace, building the foundation for cooperative learning should begin in the classroom.

Recently, the research focus has moved to the role of teachers’ discourse during cooperative learning and its effects on the quality of group discussions and the learning achieved. However, although the benefits of cooperative learning are well documented, implementing this pedagogical practice in classrooms is a challenge that many teachers have difficulties accomplishing. Difficulties may occur because teachers often do not have a clear understanding of the basic tenets of cooperative learning and the research and theoretical perspectives that have informed this practice and how they translate into practical applications that can be used in their classrooms. In effect, what do teachers need to do to affect the benefits widely documented in research? A reluctance to embrace cooperative learning may also be due to the challenge it poses to teachers’ control of the learning process, the demands it places on classroom organisational changes, and the personal commitments teachers need to make to sustain their efforts. Moreover, a lack of understanding of the key role teachers need to play in embedding cooperative learning into the curricula to foster open communication and engagement among teachers and students, promote cooperative investigation and problem-solving, and provide students with emotionally and intellectually stimulating learning environments may be another contributing factor. The Teacher's Role in Implementing Cooperative Learning in the Classroom provides readers with a comprehensive overview of these issues with clear guidelines on how teachers can embed cooperative learning into their classroom curricula to obtain the benefits widely attributed to this pedagogical practice. It does so by using language that is appropriate for both novice and experienced educators. The study included 47 students from a small private school, ranging from grades sixth through eighth. The researcher examined student perception of cooperative learning, implementation process and the overall impact of cooperative learning groups. The researcher used results from MAP tests, overall grades, observations and students pre- and post- questionnaires. The study found that in the classrooms where cooperative learning was implemented, students had academic growth in math that exceeded the national average, they built strong relationships with their classmates, and they enjoyed working in the cooperative groups. Its primary focus is to learn more about the sociological effects of cooperative learning in the classroom specifically in terms of students' perceptions of each other, their teachers, and school in general. The findings were different than expected in that the classrooms which utilized cooperative learning daily were more favorable toward the beginning of the year and less so 3 months later. In a more traditional classroom, results were less favorable in the beginning of the year and more favorable after cooperative learning had been introduced and implemented. The results of this study suggest that cooperative learning does, in fact, promote positive social results for students, but either teachers need to balance this strategy with independent work or more group skill trainings need to take place to alleviate some of the negative associations with group work. These skills will not only affect the cooperative learning environment in the classroom, but would carry over to promote a more democratic, inclusive, caring community.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain insight to the perceptions of teachers and students on learning and engagement due to the implementation of Kagan cooperative learning structures. The study utilized quantitative and qualitative data to answer the guiding research questions. A mixed methods explanatory research design was implemented, beginning with the collection of quantitative data that was expanded upon by further collection of qualitative data. The sample for this study consisted of 107 students, grades 3-8, and 19 teachers who have been trained by a Kagan cooperative learning professional developer. Surveys created by the researcher were used to gain quantitative data from both the teacher and the student participants. Following the analysis of survey data, eight teachers participated in one-one-one, semi-structured interviews. The final phase of the data collection was the use of two teacher focus groups. The responses from the interviews and focus groups were transcribed, coded, and analyzed in order to assist with answering the research questions. Using the qualitative data gathered from the interviews and surveys to explain and extend the findings created by the analysis of the quantitative data, the research effectively answered the proposed study questions. Overall, both the teachers and the students agreed that the use of the Kagan cooperative learning structures affect student learning and engagement. Students responded to the survey and agreed that they prefer to work with team mates when completing and assigned task. Teachers agreed that students become engaged and motivated when asked to complete assignments in a team setting. Several themes emerged when data from the teacher interviews and focus groups were analyzed. Positive outcomes of the implementation of Kagan cooperative learning structures were voiced from all teacher participants interviewed and those participating in the focus groups. The results of the study provided some insight to issues that are faced by teachers and the daily implementation of Kagan cooperative learning structures in the classroom. For example, new initiatives, at both the district and school level, have been put into place this year and less time is available to plan for the effective implementation of the structures.
