It seeks to determine the extent that middle school students feel cared for by teachers and other adults in school and to identify specific student perceived adult caring and non-caring behaviors. Research methods include the creation and administration of a three-question survey administered to school students (grades 7and 8) who attend an upper Midwestern middle school. Survey results are interpreted referencing attachment and self-systems theory. Research findings suggest that teachers must focus on and address both academic and personal needs to create meaningful teacher-student relationships that are perceived by students as caring.

Book excerpt: This qualitative cross-analysis case study examined the unheard voices of middle school students to report their perceptions of caring in their schools. This study utilized focus group interviews to allow thirty-one middle school students from two rural school districts in Southeast Texas the opportunity to discuss attributes of caring they perceive as important for schools. A male student group and a female student group from each school were interviewed to allow a wide range of perceptions from the students. The interviews were analyzed and coded for common themes. The twelve common themes that emerged from the interviews were: characteristics of caring teachers; attributes of a caring principal; trust; respect; motivation; high expectations; the classroom environment; safety; equity; connectedness; voice; and the need for change. Four other isolated themes emerged: friendship; family; support; and relationships between students. The voices of the student participants present an honest and insightful dialogue on the topic of caring in two rural public middle schools.

Book excerpt: "This research examines urban middle school students' perceptions of their math and science teachers' behaviors. Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong correlation existed between students' perceptions of teachers' behaviors and student self reports of academic competence"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, educators have attempted to isolate teacher-related factors that contribute to student achievement. Many possible factors such as teacher degree levels, teacher preparation, teacher licensure, years of experience, and teacher academic proficiency have been considered and their impact examined. In contrast, little consideration has been given to factors relating to student perceptions of teacher style and effectiveness. What students, specifically middle school students, believe about their teachers' competence, level of care and support, and other more affective factors may be the missing link in identifying factors that play a role in student achievement. -- The study detailed in this dissertation was designed to examine student perceptions of the style and effectiveness of teachers and to make connections between these perceptions and other factors such as gender, race, grade level, socioeconomic status, achievement, attendance, and behavior. The study utilized the Student Perception of Teacher Style Scale (SPOTS) which measures teacher style as directive or nondirective. The survey also included a student information section were students rated their teachers' levels of effectiveness and reported demographics information. -- An analysis of the data revealed that middle school students perceive their English language arts teachers' styles to be directive and their levels of effectiveness to be very effective. The study found no correlation between perceived teaching style and level of effectiveness. There were only minor statistically significant differences within the variables analyzed.

Book excerpt: Ethnic Matching: Academic Success of Students of Color is an in-depth exploration on the impact of ethnic matching in education, the paring of students of color with teachers of the same race. Research shows that this method has a positive and long-term impact on the academic experience of students of color. This book explores what makes this phenomenon relevant in today’s classrooms. Through interviewing quality teachers of color, this book sheds a light on the impact these teachers make on the academic experience of students of color. This approach is meant to provide all teachers valuable insight into techniques for engaging with diverse learners. Also, from these conversations, the book shows how the intentionality of culturally responsive practice can enhance the academic experience of students of color. Topics such as the challenges of recruiting and retaining quality teachers of color, as well as the valuable work being done on the local, state, and national level to promote diversifying the field of education as a way to provide equitable education for all students is also explored in this book.
