The purpose of this study was to identify the reasons student participation in extracurricular activities is on the decline with students in the middle school grades. A qualitative case study was conducted to research the question of, why middle school students do not participate in extracurricular activities? The use of extant data from an open-ended qualitative questionnaire provided to students was analyzed for themes and trends to determine the level of middle school student participation with extracurricular activities. Results were compared to previous research conducted within the same field. The results showed that student's participation in extracurricular activities is primarily a result of student perception of achieving social emotional needs, familial involvement, and availability of time. Therefore, a need to study this area to identify the reasons students participate in extracurricular activities is needed. The study concluded that student involvement in extracurricular activities is still lacking, for various reasons, as identified from this case study. Further research in the field of education on this topic would benefit school extracurricular programs.

Book excerpt: School-based extracurricular activity participation has been linked to positive behavioral and academic outcomes; however, little is known about the participation and outcomes of participation of Hispanic students, a group that is historically at high risk for school failure. As such, extracurricular activity participation characteristics and outcomes of a diverse group of middle school students were examined in this two journal article dissertation. First, participation differences between students based on student racial group membership and student sex were examined. Logistic regression was used to examine participation status differences (yes or no). Analysis of variance was used to examine participation intensity between student groups. Additionally, the effects of participation on outcomes related to adolescent peer groups, belongingness, and school membership were examined. Multiple regression models were utilized for this analysis, and consideration was given to interaction effects that would indicate whether groups of students (i.e. sex and race) benefited differentially from participation. Results indicated that, during the 7th grade, Hispanic students were significantly less likely to participate in sports-related extracurricular activities as compared to their Caucasian peers. However, no group differences in sex or race were found for participation intensity. Furthermore, participation in sports-related extracurricular activities was related to higher feelings of school membership for Hispanic and Black, but not White, students. In addition, participation in sports was related to Black students identifying a higher percentage of their friends as displaying prosocial behavior. Overall, the results suggested that while Hispanic students may have benefited more so than their White peers from participation, they participated at lower levels as a group. This highlights a currently under-tapped potential for intervention.

This study explored the relationship between student participation in early-morning extracurricular programs for fifth grade students in the middle school environment and student responsibility, deportment, and attitudes towards their ability to be successful in a Northern New Jersey suburban community. The mixed-methodology study utilized multiple data sources including the Conners 3TM Teacher Short rating scale; School Portfolio Toolkit school climate survey; student attendance records, disciplinary records, and homework completion records; and an open-ended questionnaire to address the following research questions: (1) How does participation in early-morning, middle school extracurricular activity impact student responsibility? (2) Is there a relationship between middle school students' participation in extracurricular activity and deportment? and (3) Is there a difference in middle school students' attitudes (self perceptions) towards their ability to be successful in core academics if they participate in extracurricular activity in contrast to non-participants? The findings presented a comprehensive view of the relationship between middle school student participation in early-morning extracurricular activities and their school experience. Upon a thorough analysis of study-related data, it was evident that participating students demonstrated improved daily attendance to school and reduced rates of tardiness, recognized the role teamwork plays in their academic and social lives, acknowledged a greater sense of freedom in the school environment, and possessed a greater connection to the school community. Other significant conclusions for participation early-morning extracurricular activities included: (1) no relationship with student deportment; (2) a diminished perception of the school staff and the school environment; (3) a positive perception of their behavior; and (4) a belief they can be better students.

Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa’s answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills—including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing—during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise—instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. One method in accomplishing this goal is to provide extracurricular activities. Memphis City Schools, therefore, supports school extracurricular activities on the elementary level that place the highest priority on academic achievement and character development. A developing body of research suggests that there are benefits for students who participate in extracurricular activities. Past research suggests that parents' involvement contributes to children's affective experience of extracurricular participation. In the present study, The Determination of Parental Support of Extracurricular Activities Scale (DPSEA), adopted from the Parental Involvement Activities Scale (PIAS), was designed to solicit the degree of parental support involvement in their child's participation in extracurricular activities. Participants in this study were 355 third to fifth grade students (N =355). Several important results were found in this study: (1) Student perceptions of involvement in extracurricular activities indicated that overall 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students exhibited positive responses in regards to their perceptions about extracurricular activities; (2) Parental perceptions of involvement in extracurricular activities indicated that overall parents of 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th grade students significantly supported the participation of their children in extracurricular activities; (3) Specifically, 3 rd and 5 th and 4 th and 5 th grade parents accounted for significant differences between their positive and negative attitude with regards to participation of their children in extracurricular activities; and (4) Although relationships between intermediate students' degree of participation and types of extracurricular activities were found not to be significant, there was a mostly positive correlation between parental support and students' degree, number, and types of participation in extracurricular activities. Relationships between intermediate students' degree, number, and types of participation in extracurricular activities and the perceived degree of parental support for student participation in extracurricular activities were examined Results of the present study suggest that parents play a key role in their children's experience in participating in extracurricular activities.
