Book excerpt: Nickel-aluminum bronzes (NAB) are a family of alloys with excellent mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, even in highly corrosive environments, attributed to the complex as-cast microstructures. Heat treatment, in-service conditions or welding procedures induce microstructural transformations resulting in changes of the properties. To evaluate the corrosion behavior of one selected NAB alloy, different heat treatments were performed and the relation between microstructural changes and corrosion behavior was studied. Under common casting conditions, CuAl10Fe5Ni5 bronze consists of the ?-phase, ?-phase, and several intermetallic phases, collectively referred to as ?-phases. The microstructures of the as-cast and heat treated samples were characterized by metallographic methods. After grinding and polishing, the samples were etched with FeCl3-as well as Cu(NH4)2Cl4-solutions and examined by light optical and scanning electron microscopy. Finally, electrochemical corrosion tests of both as-cast and heat treated samples were carried out in simulated fresh water and sea water under potentiostatic conditions. Four specimens of each sample type were polarized simultaneously at different potentials for 70 h. These specimens were used to study the corrosion progress of the different specific microstructural features and constituents by metallographic investigations.

Book excerpt: Some compositions of aluminum-bronze alloys suffer an insidious type of selective-phase attack in seawater. One proposed method to improve the corrosion behavior of these materials was the addition of minor alloying elements to promote the formation of microstructural constituents that are electrochemically compatible. Three experimental alloys, containing small amounts of tin, nickel and arsenic, respectively, were analyzed after sea-water exposure. None of the minor alloying additions imparted significant improvement in corrosion behavior of the base alloy. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effect of friction-stir processing (FSP) on the microstructure of a cast nickel-aluminum bronze (NAB) material has been characterized by various micro-analytical methods including orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). Cast NAB is widely utilized in the production of propellers for the surface ships and submarines of the U.S. Navy due to excellent corrosion-resistance. New applications require improved mechanical properties that may be attainable using FSP to achieve localized microstructure modification. Friction between a rotating tool and the surface of the material results in a 3stirring4 action that, in turn, produces adiabatic heating and local softening of the material. The tool rotation results in very large shear deformations in the softened regions and thus microstructure refinement and homogenization; in effect FSP may convert an as-cast microstructure to a wrought condition in the absence of macroscopic shape change. In as-cast material, results of optical and scanning electron microscopy (using energy dispersive analysis) show an ̀(FCC) matrix containing globular and particulate dispersions that correspond to the I̊, I̊I and I̊V second phases; these represent various morphologies of the Fe3Al intermetallic compound, which has a D03 structure. Also present are lamellar particles of I̊II, which is NiAl and has a B2 structure. The grain size in the ̀matrix is ~ 1 mm. In OIM, the microtexture and microstructure in the ̀(FCC) matrix may be readily obtained and analyzed. However, interatom distances in the Fe3Al and NiAl phases differ by only about one percent and so these phases are not distinguishable from one another during OIM. Altogether, microstructure and microtexture analysis showed that there are several regions in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ) of a material subjected to FSP. From base material inward toward the TMAZ, these include: annealing effects in undeformed base material; a region just inside the TMAZ in which grain deformation and C-type shear deformation textures are observed; regions of highly refined and recrystallized grains further inside the TMAZ, wherein the grain size is

Book excerpt: The extreme strain, strain rate and temperature gradients during Friction Stir Processing (FSP) render measurement of key parameters in the stir zone infeasible with common methods. The objective of this research was to separate the effects that temperature and deformation in an experimental study of the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ni-AL bronze (NAB). This was accomplished by subjecting as-cast NAB material to several isothermal annealing and quenching treatments as well as isothermal hot rolling processes. Sufficient material was generated to provide results and data for subsequent optical microscopy, tensile, & hardness tests. All results were then compared to similar data collected from previous works completed here at Naval Postgraduate School and with other DARPA FSP program participants. During the course of this work correlations were drawn between FSP material and the material subjected to isothermal hotworking, which may enhance our understanding of the roles that various FSP process parameters have on the microstructural transformation sequence within this material. The hot-rolling study conducted here suggests that FSP process parameters leading to severe deformation at temperatures between 950-1000 C in the NAB material provides high ductility (elongation approximately 28%) with moderate strengths.

Book excerpt: Laser surface modification techniques such as cladding and surface melting are being investigated for the repair and surface engineering of nickel-aluminium bronze (NAB) alloy components. This paper reports transmission electron microscopy observations of the microstructure developed in a commercial NAB alloy cladding. Results are presented and discussed for microstructures observed in the as-deposited and reheat zones. The results demonstrate the ability of transmission electron microscopy to provide new insights into the complex microstructural phenomena occurring in laser-processed NAB alloys.

Book excerpt: The FSP of Nickel Aluminum Bronze is a novel approach to enhance the microstructural properties of the material through a shear deformation process. This thesis examines the effect on microstructure of isothermal annealing and quenching of as-cast Nickel Aluminum Bronze and, furthermore, reports on investigation of the effects of isothermal hot rolling on microstructure of this material. Quantitative analysis of the microstructure constituents shows that heating to about 800oC results in the formation of beta by reversion of the eutectoid constituent alpha + kappaiii. Further heating in the range of 800- 1000oC results in an approximately linear decrease in the volume fraction of primary alpha and a corresponding increase in the volume fraction of beta transformation products. Isothermal rolling of NAB over this same temperature interval results in deformation of both phases and an elongated, banded distribution of alpha and beta transformation products in the middle of this interval. This suggests that local peak temperature in the stir zone of material that has been subjected to FSP may be estimated by microstructure analysis. The yield and ultimate strengths of NAB are increased and ductility is also increased when rolled material is compared to as-cast NAB. However, strength and hardness appear to be independent of prior rolling temperature.

Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted to establish the galvanic current output characteristics of the alloys when coupled to HY-80 steel in synthetic seawater. Also direct weight loss measurements of corrosion rates and potentiostatic polarization behavior were obtained, and the mode and distribution of corrosive attack on the various anode alloys were studied by scanning electron microscopy. All the alloys studied show similar galvanic current characteristics as a function of time, with an initially high current density which falls off to a stable value, primarily due to the accumulation of calcareous deposits on the cathodes. The corrosion patterns developed by each alloy are distinctly different, both on the macroscopic and microscopic scale.
