Book excerpt: The microstructure of cold-worked, high-purity nickel has been investigated following ion-simulated irradiation-induced creep with 22-MeV deuterons and 70-MeV ?-particles. The irradiations were conducted at 224°C (435°F), at stresses between 170 and 345 MPa, and at displacement rates between 13 and 30 x 10-8 displacements per atom per second (dpa/s). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) procedures were used to prepare, observe, and photograph the microstructure of the ion-irradiated uniaxial creep specimens and companion unirradiated specimens. Examination of the ion-irradiated microstructure revealed no substantial differences between the deuteron and ?-particle irradiated specimens. In all cases, a heterogeneous distribution of defect clusters or small dislocation loops and network dislocations, or both, were observed. A significant reduction in dislocation density from the unirradiated values was seen for the irradiated specimens. It was found that the small loops and defect clusters provided effective obstacles to dislocation motion as evidenced by the bowing of dislocations between adjacent defects.

Book excerpt: A detailed transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study has been performed on Ni-2.48% Si alloy specimens irradiated, in the stressed and unstressed condition, to a dose of 0.2 dpa at 623 K, with 3.5-MeV protons in the Proton Irradiation Creep Facility on the Harwell 6-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator. The objective of the work was to obtain detailed information on the size distributions of Frank loops, the primary irradiation produced microstructural feature in this material, which could be compared directly with the measured irradiation creep behavior. Low dose irradiations have been employed in order to minimize loop-loop interactions and maintain the microstructural record.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this effort is to identify the mechanisms involved in the radiation-induced evolution of microstructure in materials intended for fusion applications. The results of this study are useful in interpreting the results of several other ongoing experiments involving either spectral or isotopic tailoring to study the effects of helium on microstructure evolution. Ion-irradiated Fe-15Cr-XNi (X = 20, 35, 45, 60, 75) ternary alloys and a 15Cr-85Ni binary alloy were examined after bombardment at 675°C and compared to earlier observations made on these same alloys after irradiation in EBR-II at 510 or 538°C. The response of the ion-irradiated microstructures to nickel content appears to be very consistent with that of neutron irradiation even though there are four orders of magnitude difference in displacement rate and over 200°C difference in temperature. It appears that the transition to higher rates of swelling during both types of irradiation is related to the operation of some mechanisms that is not directly associated with void nucleation. 6 refs., 8 figs.
