Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

This work presents a two-scale model for the underlying work-hardening effects; such as the distinctly different hardening rates observed for high-strength dual-phase steels. The model is based on geometrically necessary dislocations and comprises the average microstructural morphology as well as a direct interaction between the constituents.

Book excerpt: Dual phase (DP) steels are being increasingly used as structural components in the automotive industry owing to their combination of high strength and moderate ductility.Formability and crash resistance are important mechanical properties that expose the steel to high strain rates.Fracture characteristics of a DP steel at strain rates spanning seven orders of magnitude are investigated using quantitative fractography. The DP steel investigated in this study is comprised of a continuous matrix of martensite with interspersed ferrite islands. The data reveal that the flow stress, uniform strain, and ductility are substantially higher at the higher strain rates.Quantitative fractography, employed to understand the fracture characteristics, shows an increase in the extent of ductile fracture at high strain rates. In this presentation, the results demonstrating high strain rates facilitating dimpled ductile fracture and/or increased resistance to faceted fracture are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recently implemented fracture control plan for structural steel high-way bridges makes use of a linear relation to describe the effect of strain rate on the ductile/brittle transition temperature as a function of yield strength. Literature data show that the predictions of the aforementioned relation are not general. An alternative analysis is offered along with a qualitative model for understanding the phenomenon. Results of an experimental program investigating microstructural effects on the ductile/brittle strain rate dependence are also presented. The results exhibit linear behavior of ?Tdb versus ??/?, where ?Tdb is the transition temperature shift, ? is the yield stress, and ?? is the change in yield stress caused by strain rate. The magnitude of the temperature shift, however, is dependent upon the test specimen used. Factors discussed include microstructure, type of test specimen (Charpy V-notch, nil ductility temperature [NDT], modified NDT, or compact toughness), crack initiation versus crack propagation, and implications for regulatory bodies.

Book excerpt: Quantitative relationships among processing parameters, microstructure, and material properties are of considerable interest in the context of development of robust processing routes that optimize the required material properties. As a result, the scientific literature contains a large number of experimental and theoretical studies on microstructure-properties relationships. Fracture sensitive mechanical properties such as ductility, ultimate tensile strength, fatigue life, and fracture toughness depend on the average microstructural parameters as well as the distributions of microstructural parameters and their extrema. Development of quantitative relationships between such material properties and microstructural distributions and extrema has received considerably less attention, particularly in the wrought metals and alloys. Accordingly, an important objective of this research is to perform a systematic investigation in this direction. The dependence of the fracture-sensitive mechanical properties on the microstructural distributions and extrema often leads to substantial variability in these properties: a set of specimens having the same average chemistry, the same average processing history, and the same average microstructural parameters such as volume fractions of different constituents can exhibit substantially different material properties. The present research (i) is concerned with high strength (~ 1000 MPa) high martensite (>50%) dual phase steel where the martensite is a topologically continuous phase (matrix) containing a dispersion of islands of ferrite, and (ii) focuses on understanding the microstructural origins of the variability in fracture sensitive mechanical properties, in particular variability in the room temperature uniaxial tensile ductility. The research involves quantitative microstructure characterization using stereology and digital image processing and quantitative fractography using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fracture profilometry. The analysis of the quantitative fractographic and microstructural data obtained in this research leads to useful guidelines for reducing the variability in the tensile ductility of the dual phase steel under investigation.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of thermo-mechanical and thermal treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of DP590 and TRIP680 steels revealed several critical aspects of the materials' responses to different testing. Various thermo-mechanical treatments were carried out to identify the responses to the said treatments. Following these preconditioning protocols, quasi-static, and high strain-rate tests showed how the materials reacted under tensile testing to fracture. Ensuing heat treatments on the as-received materials were performed to bring about phase fraction changes to each of the steels. These heat-treated DP and TRIP steels were examined to discover microstructural characteristics and mechanical responses through quasi-static and high strain-rate testing. The responses of the steels were analyzed and compared to the as-received testing results to observe the significant changes of mechanical behavior that occurred.
