Book excerpt: Excerpt from Microlepidoptera of the Phillippine Islands The well-known theory of Penek (1894) suggests that during the glacial periods of the Pleistocene so much water was extracted from the oceans, due to the forming of an icecap over the Northern Hemi sphere, that the seas were about 100 fathoms more shallow than they are today. At that time, the above-mentioned and now submerged plateaus must have formed the land bridges so important for the animal distribution. The author estimated that the species enumerated in the present survey amount to not more, and probably less, than 20 percent of the existing fauna of these insects and advised caution in speculating on the zoogeography of this group. Individual descriptions often contain bibliographic citations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Micro-Lepidoptera The examination of Mr. Gooch's collection has been very instructive; not only has it been found to contain many new and interesting forms, but the necessary study of the work already done has made me acquainted with the typical species, upon which no less than eleven genera have been founded, although four of these cannot rightly be retained. It is much to be regretted that many of Mr. Gooch's specimens are not in sufficiently good condition to warrant their description, and that for this reason it has been necessary to pass over much new material which might otherwise have been made avail able to increase our very limited acquaintance with these local forms. During the Philippine cruise of the fisheries steamer Albatross have been described in a paper by Lewis Radcliffe.1 The entire collection, through the kindness of Dr. Hugh M. Smith, was placed in the hands of the present writers that they might test the constancy of the char actors used by them in a revision of the genera.2 It soon became apparent, however, that the Collection contained many additional undescribed forms, and the authors undertook to prepare this detailed report on the entire material, which contains nearly specimens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Polypodiaceae of the Philippine Islands, And, New Species of Edible Philippine Fungi The Polypodiace are distinguished from the other orders of true ferns by the character of the sporangium, which is usually stalked and provided with a longitudinal annulus interrupted by the stalk, and opening by a stomium at right angles to the annulus. In the field, and without the use of the microscope, they can be distinguished as a rule from other ferns by the following characteristics: They are rarely tree ferns, as are Marattiace and Cyatheace . They are not filmy in texture, as are Hymenophyllace . They are not dichotomously compound, like most of our Gleicheniace . They do not have climbing fronds, as do most of our Schizaeace . In the Philippines, as elsewhere in the world, the Polypodiace are several times more numerous than are all other ferns combined, and, therefore, a treatment of the order does not fall far short of being an entire fern flora. My attempt has been to collect and publish descriptions of all the ferns known to have been found in these Islands. It is likely that I have fallen considerably short of this goal, for in some groups the discrepancy between my number of species and the larger one given by Underwood is far greater than can be explained by any difference in our interpretation of specific limits. A history of the work on the ferns of these Islands would be superfluous, since the subject has been well handled within the past two years by both Merrill and Underwood. While I was engaged on this work practically no ferns collected before the American occupation were available for study in Manila. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nature Study Reader for the Philippine Islands Success in Nature Study, more than in most other subjects, must depend upon the work of the teacher. The following chapters are very simple in treatment, and previous training in botany on the part of the teacher is not at all essential, yet their use as a reading text alone is not the thing expected. The pupils should make almost constant use of a note-book and pencil. The plants described have been chosen chie y on account of their familiarity and availability throughout the Islands, and the pupils should make their sketches directly from nature. They seem to take consid erable pride in the preparation of such a Nature Study note-book, and it is the best aid to accurate observation. The teacher can easily extend the range of topics studied. The thirty chapters should not be exhausted in less than sixty or seventy lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Macvicar (1926), this illustrated account of the 300 liverwort and hornwort species on the British and Irish lists is a synthesis of nearly 40 years' study. The detailed descriptions and figures, all prepared by the author, are designed to enable students of these groups to determine the morphologically variable specimens that cause so much difficulty in identification.
