Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microemulsions: Theory and Practice covers the development of the theory and practice of microemulsion systems. This book is divided into seven chapters that explore the physics and chemistry of microemulsions. This book deals first with the commercial history of microemulsions, from the discovery of carnauba wax emulsions to polymer emulsions. This topic is followed by discussions on the theoretical aspects of microemulsion formulation techniques and the design of other products. The subsequent chapter describes the microemulsion formulation with less solubilizer or emulsifier together with their optical properties. A chapter examines the mixed film theory that explains the dispersions, oil-water interface, and inferences in microemulsions. Another chapter considers the role of microemulsions in micellar solutions and their relations to the concentrations of different compounds. This chapter also looks into the association phenomena of three-component phase equilibria diagrams and liquids crystals to microemulsions. The concluding chapter discusses the role of the capillary and hydrostatic forces on the entrapment of oil in the reservoir and the necessary conditions for the displacement of entrapped oil. The important properties and economic aspects of a microemulsion slug required for the tertiary oil recovery are also covered in this chapter.
Book Synopsis Emulsions, Microemulsions and Foams by : Dominique Langevin
Download or read book Emulsions, Microemulsions and Foams written by Dominique Langevin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an interface science approach to describe and understand the behavior of the dispersions we call emulsions, microemulsions and foams. The one thing all these dispersions have in common is the presence of surface-active species (surfactants) adsorbed at the interfaces between the two fluid phases that make up the emulsions, microemulsions or foams. The interfacial layers formed by the surfactants control most of the properties of the dispersions. The book describes the properties of interfacial layers, thin films and bulk fluids used in the elaboration of the various dispersions and it explains how such properties relate to the dispersion properties of these soft matter systems: structure, rheology and stability. These dispersion properties are far from being fully understood, in particular foam and emulsion stability. In discussing the state of the art of the current knowledge, the author draws interesting parallels between emulsions, microemulsions and foams that enlighten the interpretation of previous observations and point to a deeper understanding of the behavior of these materials in the future.

Book Synopsis Microemulsions by : Cosima Stubenrauch
Download or read book Microemulsions written by Cosima Stubenrauch and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although first described by Winsor in 1954, the chemistry and technology of microemulsions attracts considerable research interest. Until relatively recently, microemulsions were not used in large scale applications as their phase behaviour and microstructure were not well understood and large amounts of surfactant were needed for their formulation. With increased understanding of their behaviour and significantly improved methods for formulating and tuning their properties, microemulsions are becoming increasingly useful in a range of industrial and research applications. Covering both the advances that have enabled improved understanding of microemulsions, and the applications in a range of industrial and research settings, and written by a first class team of contributors, this book will be essential reading for anyone using, or considering using microemulsions in the course of their work. Written for research chemists, technologists and engineers in the fine, specialty chemicals and polymer industries, and those in university or government laboratories, this book will be particularly valuable to those early on in their careers.
Book Synopsis Microemulsions as stepping stones to greener organic chemistry by : Nadja Wulff
Download or read book Microemulsions as stepping stones to greener organic chemistry written by Nadja Wulff and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-01-16 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In organic chemistry the simultaneous solubility of hydrophobic and hydrophilic reactants in a common solvent is an ubiquitous problem. Often either an expensive or a toxic solvent is needed. Alternatively, polar and non polar components are mixed into macroemulsions permitting them to react across the internal interface. However, macroemulsions display a comparatively small interfacial area. Thus, the reaction rate is low. Microemulsions feature an inherent vast interfacial area which facilitates significantly higher reaction rates. Furthermore, they allow a rather simple monitoring of the reaction kinetics by observing changes in the phase behavior. In this work the advantages of microemulsions as efficient reaction media for the photochemically induced Paternò Büchi reaction of pyruvic acid and 1 octene are elucidated. The amphiphilic reaction product 3 hexyl 2 methyloxetane 2 carboxylic acid influences the phase behavior of the microemulsion system significantly. With increasing UV exposure time the point of highest efficiency was shifted to lower temperatures and, interestingly, an increase of efficiency was detected. Hence, the newly created amphiphile acts as an efficient, hydrophobic cosurfactant. Additionally, with small angle neutron scattering and freeze fracture electron microscopy it was shown that the bicontinuous microstructure survives the UV irradiation. Another route towards green organic chemistry was opened by characterization of two new sustainable biosurfactants (mannosylerythritollipids (MEL) and cellobioselipids (CL)) in microemulsions.

Book Synopsis Micellization, Solubilization, and Microemulsions by : K.L. Mittal
Download or read book Micellization, Solubilization, and Microemulsions written by K.L. Mittal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume and its companion Volume 1 chronicle the proceed ings of the International Symposium on Micellization, Solubiliza tion, and tficroemulsions held under the auspices of the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Albany, New York, August 8-11, 1976. The technical program consisted of 48 papers by 91 authors from twelve countries. The program was divided into six sessions, and Dr. Hartley delivered the Concluding Remarks. Subsequently, six more papers were contributed for the proceedings volumes with the result that these volumes contain Sl papers (three papers are not included for certain reasons) and are divided into seven parts. The first three parts are embodied in Volume I and the remaining four parts constitute Volume 2; each part is followed by a Discussion Section. Dr. Hartley's Concluding Remarks are in cluded in both volumes. When the idea of arranging a symposium on micelles was broached to me, I accepted it without an iota of hesitation. I had two op tions: either to make it a one- or two-sessions symposium, or bring together the global community actively carrying out research in this area. I opted for the latter as the subject was very timely and I knew that it would elicit very enthusiastic response. In order to broaden the scope of the symposium, I suggested that the theme of the symposium should be Micellizationy Solubilization and Microemulsions.
Book Synopsis Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions by : Sow Hsin Chen
Download or read book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions written by Sow Hsin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in research on supramolecular assemblies in solutions, such as micelles and microemulsions, not only because of their extensive applications in industries dealing with catalysts, detergency, biotechnology, and enhanced oil recovery, but also due to the development of new and more powerful experimental and theoretical tools for probing the microscopic behavior of these systems. Prominent among the array of the newly available experimental techniques are photon correlation spectroscopy, small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, and neutron spin-echo and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. On the theoretical side, the traditionally emphasized thermodynamic approach to the study of the phase behavior of self-assembled systems in solutions is gradually being replaced by statistical mechanical studies of semi-micro scopic and microscopic models of the assemblies. Since the statistical mechanical approach demands as its starting point the microscopic struc tural information of the self-assembled system, the experimental determina tion of the structures of micelles and microemulsions becomes of paramount interest. In this regard the scattering techniques mentioned above have played an important role in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. In applying the scattering techniques to the supramolecular species in solution, one cannot often regard the solution to be ideal. This is because the inter-aggregate interaction is often long-ranged since it is coulombic in nature and the interparticle correlations are thus appreciable.
