Book excerpt: At a time when green issues are at the forefront of public consciousness, appropriate methods for the handling of environmental data are especially important for research scientist. This book is intended as practical guide to the use of microcomputers in environmental biology, the study of living organisms in relation to their environment, their distribution in time and space, and their relationships with such factors as temperature, moisture and the chemical elements involved in nutrition and pollution. the ways in which microcomputers can be most usefully employed in the analysis of experiments and surveys, the analysis of multivariate data, radio-tagging and the analysis of animal movement and in modelling complex systems.

Download or read book Plant Cell Culture written by R. A. Dixon and published by IRL Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cell culture techniques are used increasingly in basic research for plant exploitation in industry, including for example, genetic engineering and micropropagation. The rapidly developing role of plant cell culture has necessitated this new edition of a widely acclaimed book. It covers a wide range of methods central to the exploitation of plant cell cultures in fundamental and applied research. This thoroughly revised work retains the combination of giving and explaining the general principles involved with the concise description of specific protocols, with appeal to a broad readership, that made the first edition so successful. Internationally recognized experts describe the techniques used for isolating and manipulating cell cultures, and the central importance in plant biotechnology. The book will be of major interest to researchers in plant sciences in general, and specifically to botany, plant physiology, and biotechnology students.

Book Synopsis Computer Graphics in Biology by : Robert Ransom
Download or read book Computer Graphics in Biology written by Robert Ransom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer graphics is being used to an increasing extent in the biological disciplines. As hardware costs drop and technological developments intro duce new graphics possibilities, researchers and teachers alike are becoming aware of the value of visual display methods. In this book we introduce the basics of computer graphics from the standpoints of both hardware and software, and review the main areas within biology to which computer graphics have been applied. The com puter graphics literature is vast, and we have not been able to give a full course on graphics techniques in these pages. We have instead tried to give a fairly balanced account of the use of graphics in biology, suitable for the reader with some elementary grounding in computer programming. We have included extensive references both to material cited in the text and to other relevant publications. One of the factors that has fuelled the increase in graphics use is the ease with which the more simple graphics techniques may be implemented on microcomputers. We hav.e, therefore, paid attention to microcomputer graphics as well as graphics techniques suitable for larger machines. Our examples range from simple two-dimensional graph plots to highly complex surface representations of molecules that require sophisticated graphics devices and mainframe computers on which to run. The book is separated into two logical sections. The first part con centrates on general graphics techniques, giving an overview from which the reader will be able to refer to other more specialised texts as required.

Book Synopsis Biological Data Analysis by : John C. Fry
Download or read book Biological Data Analysis written by John C. Fry and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many biologists remain unfamiliar with statistical analysis and modelling, yet need to apply these techniques increasingly in their research. This volume describes how to analyze biological data, with commonly available software packages, without making errors which can invalidate results.Practical guidance is provided for planning the correct strategy for a variety of different statistical approaches and modelling problems and interpreting the results. Many examples of computer commands and output are given to illustrate the different analytical approaches. Biological DataAnalysis: A Practical Approach has been designed specifically to allow researchers with only a minimal knowledge of statistics to understand a variety of statistical methods and apply them directly. The provision of data sets from several biological disciplines will make this book useful to alltypes of biologists.
