Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbodies and Related Particles: Morphology, Biochemistry, and Physiology focuses on the reactions, properties, transformations, and technologies involved in microbodies and related particles. The book first offers information on cytoplasmic particles limited by a single membrane and microbodies of various animal species. Topics include multivesicular and heterogeneous dense bodies, rodents, lower vertebrates, birds, monotremes, marsupials, insectivores, primates, and carnivores. The text also underscores the marginal plate and crystalloid, including structure of the marginal plate, structures resembling the marginal plate, finely polytubular type, and crystalloids of other tissues. The publication takes a look at the distribution of microbodies and topographical relationship of microbodies to cellular organelles, as well as hepatic lobule and renal cortex and intracellular distribution. The text also examines the microbodies of fetal and newborn animals, formation of microbodies, and effect of tissue preparation on microbodies. The book is a valuable source of data for readers interested in microbodies and related particles.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern scientific investigation the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and morphology comprise an indivisible area of study. The present book results from the cooperation of a bioehernist and morphologists: the revision and unified treatment of available data is the primary object of our work. A comprehensive review of all the available literature is therefore beyond the scope of this volume. lt is intended to be a manual to be used in the laboratory, with convenient guidelines for practical work. Plant microbodies have been treated by B. GERHARDT in Volume 5 of this series. The discovery of fatty acid ß-oxidation in animal peroxisomes has proved once more that plant and animal microbodies are members of the same family of organelles. lt provided new insights into the physiological meaning of these particles; our understanding of these "classical" cell organelies is undergoing continual alteration and development. Book Synopsis Cell Organelles by : Reinhold G. Herrmann
Download or read book Cell Organelles written by Reinhold G. Herrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compartmentation of genetic information is a fundamental feature of the eukaryotic cell. The metabolic capacity of a eukaryotic (plant) cell and the steps leading to it are overwhelmingly an endeavour of a joint genetic cooperation between nucleus/cytosol, plastids, and mitochondria. Alter ation of the genetic material in anyone of these compartments or exchange of organelles between species can seriously affect harmoniously balanced growth of an organism. Although the biological significance of this genetic design has been vividly evident since the discovery of non-Mendelian inheritance by Baur and Correns at the beginning of this century, and became indisputable in principle after Renner's work on interspecific nuclear/plastid hybrids (summarized in his classical article in 1934), studies on the genetics of organelles have long suffered from the lack of respectabil ity. Non-Mendelian inheritance was considered a research sideline~ifnot a freak~by most geneticists, which becomes evident when one consults common textbooks. For instance, these have usually impeccable accounts of photosynthetic and respiratory energy conversion in chloroplasts and mitochondria, of metabolism and global circulation of the biological key elements C, N, and S, as well as of the organization, maintenance, and function of nuclear genetic information. In contrast, the heredity and molecular biology of organelles are generally treated as an adjunct, and neither goes as far as to describe the impact of the integrated genetic system.

Book excerpt: It is generally appreciated that large congresses are not the optimal means of facilitating communication within specialized areas of medical research. Small symposia, where scientific discussion can be confined to limited groups, have lately become successful vehicles of information transfer. However, such symposia, although eminently suited to the exploration of specific problems, often have the llherent'disadvantage of not being able to successfully address themselves to larger themes. Accordingly, the planners of this symposium have solicited the parti cipation of internationally acclaimed investigators to consider current problems both in the physiological and clinical domains of nephrology. The observant reader will note that the variety of theoretical and experi mental approaches used by the physiologists are reflected in the clinical studies, while the clinicians, in turn, have provided the physiologists with useful insights. The part of the symposium which attempted to correlate metabolic characteristics of kidney cells with their transport functions has proven to be particularly fruitful. For example, the presentations dealing with aldosterone, angiotensin and diuretics have offered a multi-faceted approach that was previously unavailable. The contributions of investigators from many countries and their enthusiastic participation have led to the success of this symposium. To them we wish to express our deep gratitude. We also wish to sincerely thank Dr. K. H. BEYER, Senior Vice President of Merck, Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories, and Dr. H. F. HOFMANN, Director of Medical Research of Sharp & Dohme GmbH for their full support and their constant attention to our many requests.

Book Synopsis Plant Peroxisomes by : Anthony H.C. Huang
Download or read book Plant Peroxisomes written by Anthony H.C. Huang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Peroxisomes deals with the biogenesis of plant peroxisomes and its relevance to the proposed model for peroxisome biogenesis in germinated seeds. The book is divided into seven chapters that discuss the history, cytochemistry, morphology, properties, isolation, metabolism, enzymology, and ontogeny of plant peroxisomes. The book first explains how advances in electron microscopy and cell fractionation studies have led to the detection of peroxisome. The subsequent chapters discuss the types and metabolic functions of plant peroxisomes and the cytochemical procedures for establishing the localization of specific enzymes and for analyzing peroxisome distribution in nonflowering plants, algae, and fungi. A chapter presents methods of peroxisome isolation from various tissues and the physical and chemical properties of the isolated organelles. Considerable chapters are devoted to the metabolic functions, enzymatic activities, development of their form, and biochemistry of peroxisomes. Several key enzymes of the glycolate pathway of photorespiration found in leaf peroxisomes are presented. A discussion on the physiology of plant peroxisomes is provided. This book will be of value to professional scientists and graduate students concerned with plant metabolism and development.
Book Synopsis Centrifugation in Density Gradients by : C. A. Price
Download or read book Centrifugation in Density Gradients written by C. A. Price and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centrifugation in Density Gradients provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of density gradient centrifugation. This book discusses the benefits of density gradient centrifugation to membrane-bound particles. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the method of differential or fractional centrifugation. This text then explores the physical basis of density gradient centrifugation. Other chapters deal with the nuts and bolts of density gradient centrifugation, the construction and composition of gradients, the properties and operation of centrifuge systems, and certain arcane but highly useful procedures. This book discusses as well density gradient centrifugation in the analytical ultracentrifuge. The final chapter deals with a collection of protocols for separating particles ranging in size from whole cells to macromolecules. This book is intended to be suitable for readers who need to separate biological particles. Biologists, chemists, biochemists, cytologists, physiologists, scientists, and research workers will also find this book useful.
