Book excerpt: No one has recorded when well digging started, but surely humans imitated elephants in digging holes in the sand to access cooler water that didn't make the children sick. Eventually, humankind began to redesign, maintain, and repair the wells they constructed, but when wells became "commodities" in the twentieth century, this maintenance ethic was

Book excerpt: The Manual of Biocorrosion explains the microbiology, electrochemistry, and surface phenomena involved in biocorrosion and biofouling processes. Written primarily for non-specialists, the information in this manual is practical and offers a comprehensive look at the three components of biocorrosion: the microorganisms, the metal, and the aqueous environment. It also addresses methods for the monitoring, prevention, and control of biocorrosion. The first part of the book covers the fundamental aspects of microbiology, electrochemistry, and biofouling of metal surfaces. The second half describes biocorrosion assessment in the laboratory and the field, the main control and mitigation procedures used, practical case studies, and laboratory methods and formulations. The Manual of Biocorrosion is the book the industrial sector (water treatment plants, oil refineries, etc.) has been waiting for, providing the basics for implementing prevention, control, and mitigation procedures. In addition, it covers the latest industry trends with discussions of biocide selection, strategies for treating biocorrosion without harming the environment, and the latest monitoring programs. The academic sector will benefit as well from the up-to-date information on mechanisms and recent advances in all biocorrosion aspects and technology. Research trends such as the application of surface analysis techniques and modern electron microscopy, the use of conventional and innovative electrochemical techniques for assessment, and microbial inhibition of corrosion are all considered. Features 100 illustrations provide you with a visual understanding of the problems and techniques discussed 30 tables give you quick access to data 46 suggested readings provide references on books, conference and workshop proceedings, and special issues of scientific journals and technical publications specifically devoted to biocorrosion and biofouling 454 reference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world, boreholes and tubewells operate inefficiently or have been abandoned. Diagnosis of the problems requires hydrogeological and operational information, which is often not available because appropriate monitoring has not taken place. Guidelines on cost effective monitoring and maintenance need to be established; information on successful rehabilitation techniques is needed. This book forms the proceedings of a conference organised to exchange practical experience and scientific knowledge on these aspects of water wells.

Book excerpt: Application of heat and chemicals to a biofouling well is a relatively new approach for water well rehabilitation. For the first time, The Application of Heat and Chemicals in the Control of Biofouling Events in Wells explains what many microbiologists now believe is the most effective form of treatment: pasteurization and application of chemicals. Consider an increasingly prevalent alternative to traditional forms of encrustation: an approach which recognizes that water wells are conduits to the sub-surface realm, whose organisms impact the production characteristics of wells. Book excerpt: Microbial growth and contamination ("Biofouling") in water systems represents a significant threat to the quality of waters produced for the microelectronic, pharmaceutical, petroleum, paper, food and other manufacturing industries. Biofouling can lead to biologically induced corrosion ("Biocorrosion"), which can cause severe damage to the equipment. Both biofouling and biocorrosion are frequently not recognized in time, underestimated, or linked with the wrong causes. The book represents a new approach by introducing biofilm properties and dynamics as basic principles of biofouling and biocorrosion, thus providing a better understanding and the means of fighting the undesired effects of biofilms. The most important features are: Case histories of biofouling in water treatment.- Detection and monitoring of biofouling.- Reverse osmosis membrane biofouling.- Biocide efficacy and biofouling control.- Plant design considerations for preventing biofouling.- Case histories of biocorrosion.- Detection, monitoring, control and prevention of biocorrosion.- Fundamentals of biofouling and biocorrosion mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are the key components for the aggregation of microorganisms in biofilms, flocs and sludge. They are composed of polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and other biological macromolecules. EPS provide a highly hydrated gel matrix in which microbial cells can establish stable synergistic consortia. Cohesion and adhesion as well as morphology, structure, biological function and other properties such as mechanical stability, diffusion, sorption and optical properties of microbial aggregates are determined by the EPS matrix. Also, the protection of biofilm organisms against biocides is attributed to the EPS. Their matrix allows phase separation in biofiltration and is also important for the degradation of particulate material which is of great importance for the self purification processes in surface waters and for waste water treatment.

Book excerpt: Well rehabilitation techniques have been the focus of major advancements in recent times. Environmental engineers can keep pace with those changes with the book Water Well Rehabilitation. Written from a microbiological viewpoint, the text outlines proven solutions to production problems in all types of wells. That perspective frequently yields new ideas and concepts, contrary to prevalent thoughts in mainstream literature on the subject. This is especially true in discussion of iron related bacterial sources, and details concerning unsafe bacterial samples and the contamination of wells.
