Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial Growth Kinetics opens with a critical review of the history of microbial kinetics from the 19th century to the present day. The results of original investigations into the growth of soil microbes in both laboratory and natural environments are summarised. The book emphasises the analysis of complex dynamic behaviour of microorganism populations. Non-steady states and unbalanced growth, multiple limitation, survival under starvation, differentiation, morphological variability, colony and biofilm growth, mixed cultures and microbial population dynamics in soil are all examined. Mathematical models are proposed which give mechanistic explanations to many features of microbial growth. The book takes general kinetic principles and their ecological applications and presents them in a way specifically designed for the microbiologist. This in itself is unusual but taken with the book's fascinating historical overview and the many fresh and sometimes controversial ideas expressed, this book is a must for all advanced students of microbiology and researchers in microbial ecology and growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second edition of the text "Bioreaction Engineering Principles" by Jens Nielsen and John Villadsen, originally published in 1994 by Plenum Press (now part of Kluwer). Time runs fast in Biotechnology, and when Kluwer Plenum stopped reprinting the first edition and asked us to make a second, revised edition we happily accepted. A text on bioreactions written in the early 1990's will not reflect the enormous development of experimental as well as theoretical aspects of cellular reactions during the past decade. In the preface to the first edition we admitted to be newcomers in the field. One of us (JV) has had 10 more years of job training in biotechnology, and the younger author (IN) has now received international recognition for his work with the hottest topics of "modem" biotechnology. Furthermore we are happy to have induced Gunnar Liden, professor of chemical reaction engineering at our sister university in Lund, Sweden to join us as co-author of the second edition. His contribution, especially on the chemical engineering aspects of "real" bioreactors has been of the greatest value. Chapter 8 of the present edition is largely unchanged from the first edition. We wish to thank professor Martin Hjortso from LSU for his substantial help with this chapter.

Book excerpt: Explores the use of conventional and novel technologies to enhance fermentation processes Fermentation Processes reviews the application of both conventional and emerging technologies for enhancing fermentation conditions, examining the principles and mechanisms of fermentation processes, the microorganisms used in bioprocesses, their implementation in industrial fermentation, and more. Designed for scientists and industry professionals alike, this authoritative and up-to-date volume describes how non-conventional technologies can be used to increase accessibly and bioavailability of substrates by microorganisms during fermentation, which in turn promotes microbial growth and can improve processes and productivity across the agri-food, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and beverage industries. The text begins by covering the conventional fermentation process, discussing cell division and growth kinetics, current technologies and developments in industrial fermentation processes, the parameters and modes of fermentation, various culture media, and the impact of culture conditions on fermentation processes. Subsequent chapters provide in-depth examination of the use of emerging technologies—such as pulsed electric fields, ultrasound, high-hydrostatic pressure, and microwave irradiation—for biomass fractionation and microbial stimulation. This authoritative resource: Explores emerging technologies that shorten fermentation time, accelerate substrate consumption, and increase microbial biomass Describes enhancing fermentation at conventional conditions by changing oxygenation, agitation, temperature, and other medium conditions Highlights the advantages of new technologies, such as reduced energy consumption and increased efficiency Discusses the integration and implementation of conventional and emerging technologies to meet consumer and industry demand Offers perspectives on the future direction of fermentation technologies and applications Fermentation Processes: Emerging and Conventional Technologies is ideal for microbiologists and bioprocess technologists in need of an up-to-date overview of the subject, and for instructors and students in courses such as bioprocess technology, microbiology, new product development, fermentation, food processing, biotechnology, and bioprocess engineering.
