Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michelangelo When we turn from his art to his life we find a typical superman of the Renaissance. A tremendous worker, an almost savage egoist in his preoccupation with whatever task he had set his hand to, he is the epitome of his period. Fate and the record of his prowess brought him into contact with two other great men, Lorenzo de Medici and Pope Julius 2md, and the history of their relations is the history of Michelangelo's life. Among these giants, as one might imagine, things were not easy; and in a tempera ment as difficult as the Bounarroti's his masters and patrons found no easy protegee. The famous quarrel with Julius forms a magnificent vignette of the life of the Renaissance. Alongside the artistic difficulties which arose from the conflicting desires of the princes and popes who demanded Michelangelo's services, were those which came from the troubled political state, and here again we find the artist torn by conflicting loyalties. His temperamental repub licanism versus his love for the Lorenzi, his work for the Popes and for Florence, these things could only be accepted in a man whose every effort was so excellent that none could afford permanently to quarrel with him if his services could be bought by reconciliation. At one brief period his work and an engineer and master of fortifications at Florence made him the hero of the Republic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Steinberg was one of the most original art historians of the twentieth century, known for taking interpretive risks that challenged the profession by overturning reigning orthodoxies. In essays and lectures ranging from old masters to contemporary art, he combined scholarly erudition with an eloquent prose that illuminated his subject and a credo that privileged the visual evidence of the image over the literature written about it. His writings, sometimes provocative and controversial, remain vital and influential reading. For half a century, Steinberg delved into Michelangelo’s work, revealing the symbolic structures underlying the artist’s highly charged idiom. This volume of essays and unpublished lectures elucidates many of Michelangelo’s paintings, from frescoes in the Sistine Chapel to the Conversion of St. Paul and the Crucifixion of St. Peter, the artist’s lesser-known works in the Vatican’s Pauline Chapel; also included is a study of the relationship of the Doni Madonna to Leonardo. Steinberg’s perceptions evolved from long, hard looking. Almost everything he wrote included passages of old-fashioned formal analysis, but always put into the service of interpretation. He understood that Michelangelo’s rendering of figures, as well as their gestures and interrelations, conveys an emblematic significance masquerading under the guise of naturalism. Michelangelo pushed Renaissance naturalism into the furthest reaches of metaphor, using the language of the body to express fundamental Christian tenets once expressible only by poets and preachers. Michelangelo’s Painting is the second volume in a series that presents Steinberg’s writings, selected and edited by his longtime associate Sheila Schwartz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are no surviving documents that explain Michelangelo's complex sculptural program for the Medici Chapel. The work as we have it is no more than an unfinished, fragmentary realization of the artist's original conception. Speculation about its meaning began quite early, for Michelangelo's contemporaries were apparently no better informed than we. An interpretation made by Benedetto Varchi in 1549 & since universally accepted, was by his own admission a personal opinion, not confirmed by the artist. In the 16th century, interpretations quite at variance with modern scholarly assumptions were made. Here, Dr. Edith Balas contends that the artist deliberately veiled his meaning in obscurity, making his images, like the language of Neoplatonic philosophers, intelligible only to an intellectual elite. Assuming the role of the Magus, Michelangelo conceived a cryptic, magical world of potent allegorical images designed not simply or primarily to commemorate the departed Medici but to help achieve elevation for their souls. Book excerpt: For all those interested in the relationship between ideas and the built environment, John Onians provides a lively illustrated account of the range of meanings that Western culture has assigned to the Classical orders. Onians shows that during the 2,000 years from their first appearance in ancient Greece through their codification in Renaissance Italy, the orders--the columns and capitals known as Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite--were made to serve expressive purposes, engaging the viewer in a continuing visual dialogue.

Book excerpt: Giambologna (1529 - 1606) is regarded as the most important European sculptor between Michelangelo and Bernini. How did he achieve this status? This volume investigates this question and examines above all Giambologna's study of Michelangelo, his all-powerful role model, and how he successfully prevailed. The young Flemish artist Giambologna most probably embarked on his study trip to Rome in 1550. On his way home he visited Florence, decided to stay and became the star at the Medici court. They sent his sculptures to the princely courts of Europe, where they became sought-after gifts. Although we know a great deal about his success, we know little of his early years in Italy, because he first appeared on the scene as a sculptor from about 1560. The alabaster figures after Michelangelo's "Times of Day" in Dresden, hitherto largely ignored, seem to be early works by the master sculptor. An examination of these sculptures promises to shed fresh light on the development of a genius.

Book excerpt: First published in 1953, this book remains a classic of the literature on Michelangelo. It continues to be the only volume that contains illustrations of all his paintings, sculpture and architecture. The book is designed to serve both the student and the art lover: the fine quality reproductions emphatically illustrate Michelangelo's genius, while the text surveys the opinions of the leading Michelangelo scholars and provides a commentary with bibliographical notes. The exhaustive selection of plates devoted to the paintings of the Sistine Chapel provides an invaluable record of their condition before the recent controversial cleaning, while ten of the colour plates show some of the paintings in their restored state.
