Download or read book Famous Michael written by Richard Slota and published by Rainbowdash Publishers LLC. This book was released on with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous Michael is about a Vietnam vet medic who can't forget the war and the woman who can't forget him. This book contains the long poem, Famous Michael, originally published by the poetry journal, Abraxas, in 1978, and republished as a chapbook by Samidat Press in 1988; as well as an adaptation, revision and expansion of it into a play. Famous Michael was staged by Solano Repertory Company in Fairfield, California, in 2008. Famous Michael won an Arty Award for Best Original Play. Shannon Kase directed. The actors, Wallace Ingalls as Michael and Kirsten Lunde as Linda, won Artys for best male actor and best female actor. The poem is, at its heart, a dramatic monologue, a genre that inhabits the territory between poetry and theatre. The speaker, Michael, is a Vietnam War vet medic. Until he left Vietnam, Michael was famous for not getting hurt, but that was never quite true. The poem follows his progress from graduation, through the war, and to his discharge due to injury. At the end, he begins training his son for the next war as his father trained him. The play is an experiment, asking the question, what happens when this poem crosses the border into theatre? What happens when actors' performances give flesh and blood to the poem's voice, and multi-media underpins (video, stills, and music) with sounds and images? The play version starts Michael's story at the moment of President George Bush’s 2003 TV announcement that Coalition Forces have begun invading Iraq. This triggers a vivid and brutal PTSD flashback. Michael stands up in his living room and takes off his bathrobe, revealing jungle battle fatigues. Suddenly it’s 1969 and he's back in the Vietnam War. The play adds a second character, Linda--the woman who can't forget him--, because, for the author, without her, the play is too heartbreaking, too far down the abyss of terror and despair. Michael’s Vietnam horror alternates with Linda’s stateside psychedelic discoveries, as she tries to talk to him, fix him, love him. At the end of the play, back in the present, a broken-down Michael recalls how his father, a WWII vet, trained Michael for the next war—which turned out to be Vietnam—and how Michael trained his son for the next war—which turned out to be Iraq. And Linda calls one last time.

Book excerpt: In honor of the tenth anniversary of the publication of The Frame, one of the authors signature works, he has taken the opportunity to fashion a second edition of the novelrevised, reimagined, and rereleased as Michaels Place, the books original working title. It is a coming-of-age tale where innocence meets corruption, safety confronts peril, and friendship copes with betrayal. It is the story of two adolescents from different worlds who meet and bond, only to have their connection severed by the appearance of jealousy, deceit, and perfidy. It is only while reconnecting during adulthood that they have an opportunity to regain the trust and affection that had once characterized their relationship. Download or read book Local Angles written by Fred Cicetti and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was still The Fifties in the summer of 1963. By the next summer, the fan was spraying it against every wall. In less than a year, Martin Luther King went to Washington with his dream, President Kennedy was dead, and something happened in Vietnam's Gulf of Tonkin. The Waldo Sun-Advertiser, a small daily newspaper in suburban New Jersey, reported the events with its community news. It assigned a reporter to cover local civil-rights advocates who went to the March on Washington. When the President was gunned down in Dallas, the Sun-Advertiser got reaction to the assassination from town fathers. The Sun-Advertiser's main stories about Vietnam came from wire services. But, it did run staff-written obituaries on page one to honor the war dead from its circulation area. This is the story of what happened on the Sun-Advertiser when the trouble started.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling true crime author investigates a shocking case of a wife, mother, and murder in the Iowa suburbs. But beneath the happy façade was a woman who used lies, manipulation, sex, ugly allegations, blackmail—and even murder—to serve her own selfish ends. On December 13, 2001, police rushed to Tracey’s home after a shooting left her young neighbor dead. Tracey claimed it was an act of self-defense. Nine gunshot wounds—and a decades-long trail of extortion, fabrication, fraud, and intimidation—said otherwise. Ten years after the crime, Tracey’s case finally went to trial in an explosive courtroom showdown. In a searing exploration of the criminal mind, acclaimed investigative journalist M. William Phelps traces the saga of a psychopath who hid in plain sight—until her wicked ways caught up with her. “Phelps is one of America’s finest true-crime authors.” —Vincent Bugliosi “Phelps is the Harlan Coben of real-life thrillers.” —Allison Brennan

Download or read book Broke written by Michael Stein and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this age of shortened office visits, doctors take care of their patients' immediate needs and often elide their own personal histories. But as reflected in Broke, Michael Stein takes the time to listen to the experiences of his patients whose financial challenges complicate every decision in life they make. Stein asks his patients to tell him about their financial conditions not only to find out how to better treat them but also to bear witness to their very survival and the power of human resilience. Stein's intimate vignettes capture these encounters, allowing his patients to offer profound, moving, and unguarded reflections about their struggles, sometimes in a single sentence. Broke is a quietly passionate critique of a country that has grown callous to the plight of the poor, the tens of millions of people in the United States who live below the poverty line and who have no obvious path to security. Full of heartbreaking and surprising details and framed by a wry, knowing, and empathic humor, there is no other book that illuminates the experience of people facing economic hardship in this way.
