Book excerpt: This interracial tale of Michael and Kaye is a modern day love story, and a voyeuristic view into what takes place in the minds of Michael and Kaye. Michael Levy, a young 32 year old freelance Restoration Conservationist, repairs paintings. Due to the irregularity in his income, Michael is partially supported by his parents, who run a successful escrow business. Shortly after meeting Kaye, he eventually falls in love with her. Michael's whole world has been turned upside down. Kaye Ellington, a 42 year old real estate agent, is a widow. She meets Michael on her way to inspect a piece of property she owns in Northern California. Over time, she falls hopelessly in love with this young man, who is ten years younger than she. She has a prosperous business relationship with his parents, who are her escrow agents. Michael wants to start a family, Kaye's children are grown. S. E. has written all her life. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she moved to California in her early 20's. After her arrival in California, the closeted writing habits continued. Writing in secret, whenever possible, allowed S. E. to write a collection of poetry, articles, scripts and short stories. Many years later, after timidly venturing out of the closet, she showed a friend a small book she had written. She was encouraged to expand the story, and Flames began to take form. This fictional tale is the prelude to the novel which will be released at a later date.

Book excerpt: This book will help readers understand the most important book of Michael Polanyi, ‘Personal Knowledge’, and help them grasp the essence of his philosophical thinking. In this volume, Polanyi’s goals are first reconstructed, and then his main philosophical arguments are introduced. The discussion is limited to the most crucial ideas that are indispensable for the arc of his book: tacit knowledge, emergence and the fiduciary program. The thirteen chapters of this volume explain the essence of the thirteen chapters of ‘Personal Knowledge’. The page numbers in this book work just as well with the 2015 ‘Enlarged Edition‘ of ‘Personal Knowledge‘ as with the original issues. Whether you just want to get the key quotation and the context right on tacit knowledge, emergence or the fiduciary program, or want to have a deep dive for your scholarly research in philosophy and management, this book is for you.

Book excerpt: Set against the anarchy of the Civil War, this novel tells the story of the raven-haired beauty Lynora Hollingsworth, daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, an aspiring young artist who spends one wild, enchanting evening in the arms of a stranger, but plans to spend the rest of her life in a marriage that has the approval of her family. However, when her fianc rapes her, she decides to strike out on her own rather than subject herself or the child she has discovered she is carrying to this mans cruelty. Rene Michael DuClaire, gambler and notorious rake, to whom she flees for asylum, is also the handsome stranger to whom she has given her heart. When he surmises her condition and realizes he is the father, he marries her against her will. It is a stormy relationship exacerbated by the onslaught of the Civil War, a conflict over which all characters must make some tough decisions regarding their own comfort and their consciences. There are various subplots in the story. One of them deals with the rejected suitors espionage for the Union army, and reveals his sinister nature in his desire for revenge. Another has to do with an Underground Railroad system in Louisiana, and a third deals with the drama of the Civil War itself on the people it touched in the swampy city of New Orleans and surrounding area. The scenes that relate to the war have been researched and are essentially factual, including the shipyard strike, all battle scenes, and even the explosion of the powder plant in Gretna. The captains, majors, and generals were all real people involved in the war at the places described. Only the lieutenants and privates are fictional.

Book excerpt: This Theological Commentary is the first full-length work in English to consider Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion in its entirety, both the words and the music. Bach’s oratorio is a globally popular musical work, and a significant expression of Lutheran theology. The commentary explains the Biblical and poetic text, and its musical setting, line by line. Bach’s Passion is shown to be the work of a master craftsman and trained theologian, in the collaborative and cultural milieu of eighteenth-century, Lutheran Leipzig. For the first time, this work makes much German scholarship available in English, including archival sources, and includes a new scholarly translation of the libretto. The musical and theological terms are explained, to enable an interdisciplinary understanding of the Passion’s meaning and continued significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ topped box office charts and changed the American religious conversation. The controversies it raised remain unsettled. In After The Passion Is Gone: American Religious Consequences, leading scholars of religion and theology ask what Gibson's film and the resulting controversy reveal about Christians, Jews, and the possibilities of interreligious dialogue in the United States. Landres and Berenbaum's collection moves beyond questions of whether or not the film was faithful to the gospels, too violent, or antisemitic and explores why the debate focused on these issues but not others. The public discussion of The Passion shed light on a wide range of American attitudes--evangelical Protestant, mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Jewish--about media and faith, politics and history, Jesus and Judaism, fundamentalism and victimhood. After The Passion Is Gone takes a unique view of vital points in Christian-Jewish relations and contemporary American religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a short description by the author, Michael Assibey-Bonsu, on how living the 365 principles for 365 days, found in this book, propelled him profoundly forward in life. The principles outlined in this book have completely shifted the way I see and view life on a day-to-day basis. Take, for example, the three deepest internalized principles of self-awareness, complete expression, and three for eight and ten for thirty. At the beginning of 2017, when I began to internally understand and practice these, they allowed me to uncover and harness my passion, which had always been loosely tied to business and people. From becoming self-aware and understanding my passions, I began to completely express myself as who I am, nothing more and nothing less, which uncovered access to numerous untapped gifts and strengths I had no idea existed within me. This is how my startup companies of Nector and Digital Proof came into being and also how my latest project, Social Proof, is unfolding. These have all been created as a result of me following my passions, from self-awareness to completely expressing myself, together with living the 365 principles expressed in this book. From that point forward, the world and my purpose therein became clear, and the companies and teams I was able to build evolved effortlessly, as if an unseen yet guiding hand was directing me. I realized how everything had converged and, as a result, was able to continue adding more ideas and further innovation, which led to me understanding that I had tapped into my purpose, creating a bright and futuristic feeling. Thereafter, I followed the principle of three for eight and ten for thirty, which is the view that the future is bright and my purpose is even brighter. So the understanding that it will take a while to fully come to fruition leads to the realization and acceptance of the number of years I will have to keep moving toward my goals so as to reach who I was created to be. With these principles, the way is now clear, and I wake every day with a sense of fulfillment, regardless of the understanding of how long it may take. I now know what the end feels and looks like, which ultimately balances my passion and my purpose. This is such a powerful state of mind, and the greatest gift of wisdom that has been given to me by God the creator thus far. By positioning myself for greatness and following these 365 drops of wisdom, I wake up every day satisfied, before Ive even reached my best self. These principles are not mine alone, but they are ours to share with all. I truly hope that my journey in following these 365 truths is emulated by many others and that they also reap the benefits and future they richly deserve. The present is bright, the past is forgotten, and the future is clear.

Book excerpt: Passion's Fictions traces the intimate links between literature and the sciences of mind and soul from the age of Shakespeare to the rise of the novel. It chronicles the emergence of new sciences of the passions between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, and it argues that this history was shaped by rhetoric that contained the most extensively particularized discourse on the passions, offering principles for moving and affecting the passions of others in concrete social scenes. This rhetoric of the passions centered on narrative as the instrument of a non-theoretical knowledge of the passions in their particularity, predicated on an account of passion as an intimate relation between an impassioned mind and an impassioning world: rhetoric offers a kind of externalist psychology, formalized in the relation of passion to action and underwriting an account of narrative as a means of both moving passion and knowing it. This volume describes the psychology of the passions before the discipline of psychology, tracing the influence of rhetoric on theories of the passions from Francis Bacon to Adam Smith and using that history to read literary works by Shakespeare, Milton, Haywood, Richardson, and others. Narrative offers a means of knowing and moving the passions by tracing them to the events and objects that generate them; the history of narrative practices is thus a key part of the history of the psychology of the passions at a critical moment in its development.
