Book excerpt: This book is about all the ways that I, and millions of people with autism, experience the world. When I was in high school, I attended a seminar for people with Asperger's. There was another individual there (pretty safe bet he was on the spectrum) who raised his hand and repeated the cliché "there's no normal." He said, "We're all different! We're all weird in our own way! So, there really is no such thing as normal."I raised my hand and said, "You know what? That's bullsh*t. There is such thing as normal! The difference between us and everybody else is that they all have quirks that fall within the range of what society considers normal, and we fall outside that range." I almost felt bad, because he didn't have much to say after that.I encourage you to read our first book, Chasing the Rabbit, because it will give you a very different perspective on my life, as it's mostly written from my dad's point of view. The first book I wrote (with my dad) was Chasing the Rabbit: A Dad's Life Raising a Son on the Spectrum. My dad chose that title--he always describes me with the analogy of a greyhound chasing a mechanical rabbit: the greyhound can see the rabbit but can never catch it. My dad says that the rabbit represents normal, and I'm the greyhound. As someone with Asperger's--what's now called "high-functioning autism"--I am always trying to be "normal." I know what "normal" is, and I know what "normal" looks like, but I am perpetually trying to catch the rabbit, which is "normality." A lot of people have an issue with the term "normal." I don't. When people say things like, "There's no such thing as normal," it devalues the struggle I go through every day.

Book excerpt: Combining 36 pages of full illustrations with a first-hand account of living life as a child with autism, this book provides a humbling and inspiring look at how an autism spectrum disorder affects children. Tracy likes to draw, make movies and play, just like other kids. She also has autism spectrum disorder. This means she processes many everyday situations differently, such as making friends. Over time, she’s learned tricks for communicating and coping when things are hard for her. Follow along as Tracy gives a peek at what life is really like for someone living with autism and how she discovered life beyond this common disorder. Children’s voices are rarely heard amid the complexity of modern medicine. That's why every story in the My Life Beyond series stems from the imagination and experience of a Mayo Clinic patient. The books were developed through collaboration between these patients, Mayo Clinic physicians and author-illustrator Hey Gee. Through this unique lens of inspiring real-life experiences, the series explores how children view illness, challenges and recovery. One in fifty-four children in the U.S. are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder—which includes autism, Asperger's syndrome, and childhood disintegrative disorder—but their experiences with this condition are rarely shared. With 36 pages of full illustrations, My Life Beyond Autism brings the reader into the world of a child diagnosed with autism to show how children with this condition view their disorder and work through common behavioral challenges. The “My Life Beyond” graphic novel book series is published in collaboration with Fondation Ipsen.

Now, one young man who has lived his life with autism shares a poignant, personal account of his experience so that others can have a clearer understanding of this elusive terrain. I Live my Life With Autism is a chronological memoir by Matthew Kryspin that takes readers through his developmental years to his present days, sharing the world that his loved ones could not enter. The memoir reveals his point of view and thought process through preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, and two subsequent years of education. By illuminating how the world unfolds to Matthew, and how Matthew, in turn, unfolds himself to the world around him, this rare memoir offers a story of hope and encouragement. Parents of children from ages three to twelve years old who are concerned about their child's development and future will find this book especially meaningful. Anyone who wants to forge the best tomorrow possible for an autistic person will welcome this uplifting book.

Getting the diagnosis helped him look back on his life and make peace with some of the things that had happened to him in the past. He grew up thinking he was weird kid. He felt like it was his fault. Andrew talks about how he works hard to overcome autism and be happy. Andrew shares how he was bullied as a young person and also talks about how he worked hard not to let it bring him down. He shares what he has done to make him so successful and happy in his life. Getting a diagnosis answered a lot of questions that Andrew's family had about him. Andrew shares about how he has lived life with two totally different perspectives on life. The first perspective is from someone who grew up without knowing he had autism. He knew that life was hard for him and many things seemed difficult for him but he did not know that he had an autism diagnosis until much later in life. The second perspective on life is when he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. This gave him a new perspective on life as he was able to look back upon his childhood and make peace with many of the things that happened to him in his childhood. This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn more about what life with autism is like. It gives two perspectives. The first is from a child growing up undiagnosed without knowing that they had autism and the second perspective is from an adult looking back throughout his life making peace with some of the things that had happened to him as a child all while knowing he had autism. Read this book to learn about living with autism.

Book excerpt: Candid, Vulnerable, Informative, Inspirational When Skyler was three years old, he was diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism. When he was 17, his mom wrote a book about his amazing life. From page one, Welcome to My Life delivers on its promise to place you squarely in Skyler's life, surrounded by mom and dad, Laurie and Josh, and superstar sister, Kendall. Detailed sensory descriptions take you to doctors' appointments and trick-or-treating, to Qdoba and the kitchen table, to the bathroom for another "pull-ups" change, to family gatherings, to the Autism Center, and to conversations and internal dialogue so honest that you'll feel like you're part of the family too. Welcome to My Life shares the 14-year journey of a true warrior mom advocating for her non-verbal, severely autistic son from diagnosis through his teenage years. This brutally honest and heartwarming account details the daily struggles and often lack of social understanding that families face when raising a child who relies on parental assistance for every need. "A memoir like no other -- truthful and raw, hilarious and unexpected, heartbreaking and uplifting. Laurie L. Hellmann's Welcome to My Life is a love letter to her son Skyler and a welcome letter to the masses. It is dose of reassurance to us all, and a reminder that the world -- even when it's unpredictable and frightening -- is still shimmering with silver linings and powerful lessons." Because He Has No Words and Yet So Much to Say For mothers and fathers, sister and brothers, autism isn't a personal diagnosis ... it's a family diagnosis. Especially when your autistic loved one copes with significant development delays, suffers from serious chronic medical conditions, is an insomniac, and exhibits behaviors that disrupt the flow of day-to-day life. Autism turns households inside out, cracks hearts wide open and turns daily routines upside down. Take a journey with Laurie L. Hellmann and explore: -- How Skyler's autism diagnosis shook and then restored her faith -- The realities of navigating divorce, co-parenting and new love when your child has special needs -- The emotional and physical toll (on Skyler and his family) of countless medical and behavioral treatments -- The difference between hope, false hope, acceptance and gratitude in the face of disappointment, uncertainty and fear -- The effects of autism on sibling relationships -- How autism can challenge and strengthen a marriage -- Why laughter is good medicine for us all Experience the laughter and love, unspoken bonds and unflagging devotion of one very special family. And be changed forever by the knowledge that a mother's love knows no bounds, and that autism -- though it presents various challenges -- does not define who a person is nor does it devalue or diminish their contributions to this world.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give an insight into what life was like growing up with autism, a condition hardly understood when I was younger; autism affects social and communication skills besides the following conditions that some individuals might experience: Repetitive and restrictive behaviour Over-sensitivity to light, sound, taste or touch Highly focussed interests or hobbies Extreme anxiety Meltdowns and shutdowns In my case, anxiety is one problem when bad memories emerge and, often soon forgotten when occupied or in the company of others. With 20 years of gathering the relevant information, I must give thanks to my late mother. She got me started by highlighting the relevant events taking place throughout my childhood and beyond. With so many other contacts around helping me, I cannot thank them all. I can however thank my sisters, Josephine, Norma and her friend, Ross Kane for giving me advice to self publish this book. In time, my book should remain beneficial to the relevant professions such as teachers, researchers in autism, the police and so on so. With the appropriate professionals around, I am hoping that the younger generation with autism will be spared the pain that I have had to put up with throughout my life.

Book excerpt: No matter who we are or where we come from, autism has taken us on a common journey. Our faith has given us a common hope. We are different - black, white, male, female - but we all have children with autism. These are our stories: our struggles, our failures and triumphs, our parenting, our faith and a bit of everything in between. Along the way we realized we are not alone. Our lives, though not the ones we imagined, have given us new purpose and meaning. Our children have something unique and beautiful to offer the world. And to us. From creating a new normal for the holidays to re-thinking sibling relationships, from asking "why?!" to how to cope moving forward, Life on the Spectrum faces the reality of living with and loving our autistic children from a perspective of faith. Each chapter begins with a Scripture that has become dear to us, shares our stories, exploring how God's truth can actually be lived out in the messiness of our lives on the spectrum, and ends with questions designed to help us reflect, rethink, and ultimately grow closer to Christ. Come on this journey with us. Be encouraged. You aren't alone either. Life on the Spectrum is a masterpiece! If you are feeling stressed out, stuck, or frustrated with the daily demands and difficulties of raising a child on the Autism Spectrum, this is a MUST READ! These stories are real and raw, written with unabashed honesty and unashamed human fragility. Every page offers a new, hope-filled perspective that will keep you moving forward. You will find refreshment

Book excerpt: In But Everyone Feels This Way, Autism acceptance activist and multi-million-follower TikTok influencer Paige Layle shares her deeply personal journey to diagnosis and living life autistically. It all started out pretty normal: Paige lived in the countryside with her parents and brother Graham. She went to school, hung out with friends, and all the while everything seemed so much harder than it needed to be. A break in routine threw off the whole day. If her teacher couldn't answer 'why?' in class, she dissolved into tears, unable to articulate her own confusion or explain her lack of control. But Paige was normal. She smiled in photos, picked her feet up when her mum needed to vacuum instead of fleeing the room, and did well at school. She was popular and well-liked. And until she had a full mental breakdown, no one believed her when she claimed that she was not okay. Women are frequently diagnosed with autism much later than men, often in their late teens or early twenties. Armed with her new diagnosis, Paige set out to learn how to live her authentic, autistic life, and discovered how autism could be a source of strength. She challenges stigmas, taboos, and stereotypes so that everyone can see themselves authentically. Along the way, her online activism has spread awareness, acceptance, and self-recognition in millions of others.
