Book Synopsis The Literature of Al-Andalus by : María Rosa Menocal
Download or read book The Literature of Al-Andalus written by María Rosa Menocal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Literature of Al-Andalus is an exploration of the culture of Iberia, present-day Spain and Portugal, during the period when it was an Islamic, mostly Arabic-speaking territory, from the eighth to the thirteenth century, and in the centuries following the Christian conquest when Arabic continued to be widely used. The volume embraces many other related spheres of Arabic culture including philosophy, art, architecture and music. It also extends the subject to other literatures - especially Hebrew and Romance literatures - that burgeoned alongside Arabic and created the distinctive hybrid culture of medieval Iberia. Edited by an Arabist, an Hebraist and a Romance scholar, with individual chapters compiled by a team of the world's leading experts of Islamic Iberia, Sicily and related cultures, this is a truly interdisciplinary and comparative work which offers a interesting approach to the field.
Book Synopsis De Animalibus. Michael Scot's Arabic-Latin Translation, Volume 3 Books XV-XIX: Generation of Animals by : Aafke M.I. van Oppenraay
Download or read book De Animalibus. Michael Scot's Arabic-Latin Translation, Volume 3 Books XV-XIX: Generation of Animals written by Aafke M.I. van Oppenraay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle's De Animalibus was an important source of zoological knowledge both for the ancient Greeks and for the medieval Arabs and Europeans. The work was twice translated into Latin, once directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke and once, by way of the intermediary of an existing Arabic translation, by Michael Scot. Of these, Scot's translation is the oldest. The De Animalibus is composed of three sections: 'History of Animals' (10 books), 'Parts of Animals' (4 books) and 'Generation of Animals' (5 books). The present volume contains the first critical edition of Scot's translation of the last section. Editions of his translations of the two preceding sections are in preparation. The volume includes very complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin word indexes and, as a supplement, the first complete word index to the original Greek text of 'Generation of Animals'. The volume for the first time makes available to the scholarly world a version of Aristotle's 'Generation of Animals' that has long been one of the main sources of knowledge in Europe on the subject. Being a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text also contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic.

Book excerpt: "History records Michael Scot (c.1175-c.1235) as one of the foremost intellectuals of medieval Europe, a wide-ranging Renaissance man before the actual Renaissance. Legend records him as a wizard in league with the Devil; Dante consigned him to a circle of the Inferno. Within Scotland, Fife and the Borders are rival claimants for his place of birth. Paris, Bologna, Naples, Sicily, and (above all) Toledo were the scenes of his scholarship, which included alchemy, astrology/astronomy, medicine and psychology as well as other disciplines. His activity as a translator in Toledo brought Arab learning into Europe and he contributed to the ferment of Aristotelian enquiry in its uneasy co-existence with Christian faith. Of his original writings, the Liber physionomiae is his best known; it was translated into many European vernacular languages." "The present book is the first to offer an extensive account of both the historical and legendary Michael Scot, together with representations of him in literature and the visual arts. He has attracted the creative attention of James Hogg, Sir Walter Scott, D. G. Rossetti, R. L. Stevenson, Patrick Geddes, John Duncan, John Buchan, as well as contemporary poets such as Douglas Dunn, Kenneth White and William Hershaw."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Contempt and Pity by : Daryl Michael Scott
Download or read book Contempt and Pity written by Daryl Michael Scott and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, the idea that African Americans are psychologically damaged has played an important role in discussions of race. In this provocative work, Daryl Michael Scott argues that damage imagery has been the product of liberals and conservatives, of racists and antiracists. While racial conservatives, often playing on white contempt for blacks, have sought to use findings of black pathology to justify exclusionary policies, racial liberals have used damage imagery primarily to promote policies of inclusion and rehabilitation. In advancing his argument, Scott challenges some long-held beliefs about the history of damage imagery. He rediscovers the liberal impulses behind Stanley Elkins's Sambo hypothesis and Daniel Patrick Moynihan's Negro Family and exposes the damage imagery in the work of Ralph Ellison, the leading anti-pathologist. He also corrects the view that the Chicago School depicted blacks as pathological products of matriarchy. New Negro experts such as Charles Johnson and E. Franklin Frazier, he says, disdained sympathy-seeking and refrained from exploring individual pathology. Scott's reassessment of social science sheds new light on Brown v. Board of Education, revealing how experts reversed four decades of theory in order to represent segregation as inherently damaging to blacks. In this controversial work, Scott warns the Left of the dangers in their recent rediscovery of damage imagery in an age of conservative reform.
