Book excerpt: Shawn Henning's new book is a powerful and overwhelming tribute and legacy to Michael Jackson. In one book, he's collected love letters, reflections, eulogies, poems, essays and drawings from people throughout the world who have a special appreciation for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I was particularly impressed at the diversity of material, from so many different countries and cultures ndash; all of it heartfelt and illuminating. In We Love You More, we learn about the many different ways that Michael Jackson affected people from all walks of life. The participants talk about how Michael's music, creativity and pubic example affected their lives and helped them to be better people. The contributions are a wonderful cathartic output to help to come to terms with the loss of Michael's huge talent. They will not only comfort those who have written them, but those who read them. People will learn about the experiences they have in common, with people throughout the world, who followed Michael's career, his music, his good deeds and the example he set for this generation and generations to come. The book will also be of comfort to Michael's own family. They will see that the spirit of Michael will continue in people everywhere and in many ways and for many reasons. It's also fascinating to learn what people have to say about different songs and what they meant to their lives. I'm impressed by the diverse elements in the book... from eulogies, to memories to poems and beautiful drawings and paintings and even photo montages at the end. Mr. Henning... you've done a wonderful service to the Michael Jackson fan community and I commend you. Sincerely yours, Larry Nimmer

Download or read book A Fijian at Heart written by Veena Rathi and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rugby with the stunning Fiji team not only gave me the opportunity to experience diversity in the highest form but inspired me to share my experiences living in Fiji a paradise and well known tourist destination once known as the way the world should be also sharing my experiences living in the USA the most prosperous powerful nation on Earth, while having a blast in one of the most vibrant cities of the world, Las Vegas. Growing up as a child on a copra plantations owned by part European families I lived a fun and exciting life with some challenges and was influenced by the European culture and their language and religion A year at high school in an Indian dominated society saw me struggling to adapt to this environment attending high school with students mainly ancestors of the indentured laborers who were very competitive which made me strive for higher standards through discipline. My personality allowed me to connect with people easily and the opportunity to take part in a carnival gave me exposure not only to be in the public eye but to enhance my leadership skills and to meet with prominent people including the governor general of Fiji Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau who later became the president of the country. Anthony Robbins the world known motivator and owner of the exclusive Namale plantation resort who I met personally inspired me to improve the quality of my communication through his book unlimited power which helped me to deal with many sensitive issues like depression, death and suicide and gave me the power to be a great leader by having a great bonding power that helped me to connect with my people to bring the best out of them. The life at an exclusive world known 5 star resort gave me the opportunity to meet the famous world environmentalist Jean Michael Cousteau and to get a taste of luxury and pampering and also to experience the hospitality of the Fijian people who are dedicated to providing outstanding service with a personal touch making Fiji one of the best tourist destinations of the world. Destiny and a true love story brought me to the USA the land of hope exposing me to a quality of life with high standards and gave me an understanding of the American dream which is about owning your own home while learning to adapt to a new environment and family and a career in banking, Recognition which is a key element in this society saw me with a gold medal presented in Hawaii for my outstanding sales and customer service skills giving me a chance to be part of a royal celebration of excellence and then becoming one of the leaders of the bank managing in a dynamic and changing environment. My inspiring management style helped me to overcome many challenges including managing people through so much change in an economy that was constantly declining and a massive lay off and with the so many opportunities out there I am now going to think a big picture, take a different route to break new ground and will find a whole new world to conquer.
Download or read book The Media City written by Scott McQuire and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2008-02-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If only more new media commentators had this level of historical-critical reference, engaging, good stories, and a degree of wonder at what media and windows bring to the city, to life." - John Hutnyk, Goldsmiths, University of London "Just when you thought the last word had been said about cities and media, along comes Scott McQuire to breathe new life into the debate. When revisiting existing pathways, his always ingenious eyes produce startling and original insights. When striking out into new territory, he opens up before us inspiring new vistas. I love this book." - James Donald, University of New South Wales "A book that crams into a single chapter more insights and illustrations than seems feasible, yet which ties all threads together through a consistent, theoretically rich analysis of the interplay of media and city... Writing with effusiveness uncharacteristic of back-cover blurbs on academic tomes, James Donald says ′I love this book′. But I will end by echoing his praise, and make a promise to readers: you will love The Media City, too." - European Journal of Communication "Refreshingly clear, getting to grips with some of the key concepts of urban sociology in a way that moves beyond the wistful evocation and splatter of undigested terms that characterises so much academic writing on culture and cities." - Media, Culture & Society Significant changes are occurring in the spaces and rhythms of contemporary cities and in the social functioning of media. This forceful book argues that the redefinition of urban space by mobile, instantaneous and pervasive media is producing a distinctive mode of social experience. Media are no longer separate from the city. Instead the proliferation of spatialized media platforms has produced a media-architecture complex - the media city. Offering critical and historical analysis at the deepest levels, The Media City links the formation of the modern city to the development of modern image technologies and outlines a new genealogy for assessing contemporary developments such as digital networks and digital architecture, web cams and public screens, surveillance society and reality television. Wide-ranging and thoughtfully illustrated, it intersects disciplines and connects phenomena which are too often left isolated from each other to propose a new way of understanding public and private space and social life in contemporary cities. It will find a broad readership in media and communications, cultural studies, social theory, urban sociology, architecture and art history. Winner of the 2009 Jane Jacobs Urban Communication Award, awarded by the Urban Communication Association.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book Synopsis Otherness and Power: Michael Jackson and His Media Critics by : Susan Woodward
Download or read book Otherness and Power: Michael Jackson and His Media Critics written by Susan Woodward and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otherness and Power: Michael Jackson and His Media Critics is an innovative study of the cultural impact of Michael Jackson. Jackson had millions of ardent fans around the world, but from the early days of his adult career many in the media mocked and reviled him. How did such divergent attitudes come about? This book examines the origins and psychological underpinnings of the media's hostility by closely analyzing some of the most harshly critical writings about Jackson. While racism and discomfort with Jackson's "otherness" have previously been recognized as the elements that fueled media criticisms, Susan Woodward reveals another important factor: the perception that Jackson was extraordinarily powerful, in ways that went beyond celebrity and wealth. Through research and careful analysis, Woodward explores the ways in which Jackson's power was seen, the largely unconscious response to his power, the functions of the media's criticisms and the origins of the perceptions of Jackson's power.

Download or read book Behind the Mask written by Patrick Treacy and published by Liberties Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a boy from a small Irish village who became an adventurer, a humanitarian and a doctor to the stars. Part travelogue, part thriller, part celebrity tell-all, you've never read anything quite like it. Patrick Treacy grew up in rural Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Determined to become a doctor, he raised the money for medical school by smuggling cars from Germany to Turkey. Working in a hospital in Dublin in 1987, a needle he had used to draw blood from a patient with HIV jabbed him in the leg. He took blood test after blood test, wondering whether he was going to die. Overwhelmed, he moved to New Zealand, away from everyone who knew what he was going through: his girlfriend, his friends and his colleagues. Thus he began a peripatetic existence, working as a doctor around the world. In Saddam Hussein's Baghdad, Treacy was arrested and imprisoned, spending days wondering whether he was going to be hanged as a spy. In Australia, he worked for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. On returning to Dublin, Treacy set up the Ailesbury Clinic, where he worked on the cutting-edge of the new field of cosmetic dermatology, championing treatments including the use of Botox. This brought stars to his doorstep, including the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Central to this memoir is Treacy's personal journey: his efforts to escape the Troubles, cope with the fear that he might have contracted HIV (until he found out that he had not), get over his lost love and defend Michael Jackson's legacy.
