Electrochemical screening tests in an eastern slag have continued and are summarized. The chemistry, mechanisms and kinetics of electrode/slag reactions have been evaluated. Important electrochemical reactions include: slag electrolysis, preferential transfer of aggressive ion species in the slag to the cathodes and anodes, chemical reactions of electrodes with slag and with the products of the electrolysis of the slag, and cavitation/erosion of the anodes. Materials development and detail design activities in support of the U-02 Proof Test Series is continuing. Fabrication and assembly has been completed for each of the three test assemblies for the Proof Test Series. Proof Test 1 (WESTF Test 38) and Proof Test 2 (WESTF Test 39) were completed in October and November, respectively. Post-test evaluation of these runs in continuing; facility and thermal analyses have been completed. Post-test material characterization is continuing, including efforts at National Bureau of Standards (NBS) and Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories.

Although neither country's MHD materials research program has yet progressed to a sufficiently advanced stage to assess very precisely the relative state of the art, the U.S. and USSR appear to be at about the same level.

These CDIF test channels will be driven by a coal combustor which is under development at PERC in parallel with this program. Progress is reported on the following tasks: (1) Conduct basic engineering tests and perform necessary analytical work to define preferred design configurations of the CDIF channel in relation to fluid dynamics and electrodynamic performance. (2) Conduct basic engineering tests and perform necessary analytical work to define preferred electrode module design, side wall construction, wall materials, and fabrication methods for a high performance, durable MHD channel. (3) Conduct basic engineering tests and perform necessary analytical work to define instrumentation and controls and preferred inverter systems and/or channel electrical controls in relation to inverter requirements and operating stability. (4) Determine basic performance capability of the disk generator design under conditions simulating an open cycle MHD plasma. (5) Maintain continuous design and engineering liaison with the Pittsburgh Energy Research Center (PERC) in the development of the two stage CDIF coal combustor. Ensure design compatibility of the integrated combustor-generator system. Design, build, and deliver to PERC an instrumented test section to assist in the design and performance evaluation of the PERC subscale 5 MWt experimental combustor. Obtain quantitative chemical and physical data on relevant coal slags with the PERC experimental combustor. (6) Conduct necessary bench tests to establish essential design information on fluid dynamic, heat transfer, and current transfer characteristics of selected MHD coal slags.

Book excerpt: This program is directed towards the engineering development of cold metallic electrodes which are alternatives to the use of platinum as an anode clad material for MHD generators. Results of continuing laboratory screening tests are presented. Improvements in the anode arc test methodology and test setup, which have resulted in improved reproducibility as well as test simplification, are discussed. Laboratory electrochemical corrosion testing has been initiated using aqueous and molten salts as the aggressive constituent in the electrolyte. Initial results from these tests are reported. On the basis of these test results, electrochemical corrosion tests using a molten salt are preferred. As a result of ongoing laboratory screening tests, acceptance criteria, which are interim in nature and are likely to change based on future test results have been defined for the anode arc and electrochemical corrosion tests. Reflecting the initial laboratory test results, a listing of candidate advanced alloys which should demonstrate improved corrosion resistance has been defined. Upon completion of WESTF modifications, facility checkout and activation operations have been initiated. Progress, as well as those difficulties which have been encountered, in completing WESTF activation is reported. Detailed engineering and test planning activities in support of WESTF tests are reported.
