Now the police are after him as he is trying to stay one step ahead of them. February 28 is when the flu outbreak begins in the United States of America. The government quickly moves to vaccinate everyone with free flu vaccines. People start to die a few days after they receive the free flu vaccines. Jesús Ramiro is sure that the flu vaccines have something to do with it all after his parents die from the flu. Now he is in trouble since the bullets have been declared illegal by President Kris Kitty Kleptomaniac’s executive order. President Kris Kitty Kleptomaniac of the Government of the Rich (G. O. P.) party declares martial law in the country. Now President Kris Kitty Kleptomaniac is able to decide who is legally and illegally in the country. He creates an executive order to take away the United States of America citizenship from anyone who has less than $1,000 in their bank account. Thus fulfilling his campaign promise of, “Make America 4 the Rich Again” to his loyal followers in the rich one percent. Those that do not have the minimum amount required are labeled illegals and subject to deportation by Dump-water Deportation Services to México. The survivors of the flu epidemic are now living in refugee camps along the northern Mexican border. (Word Count 65,081)

Tracing the accretion of ports of entry, boundary markers, transportation networks, fences and barriers, surveillance infrastructure, and dams and other river engineering projects, C. J. Alvarez advances a broad chronological narrative that captures the full life cycle of border building. He explains how initial groundbreaking in the nineteenth century transitioned to unbridled faith in the capacity to control the movement of people, goods, and water through the use of physical structures. By the 1960s, however, the built environment of the border began to display increasingly obvious systemic flaws. Book excerpt: Educating Across Borders is an ethnography of the learning experiences of transfronterizxs, border-crossing students who live on the U.S.-Mexico border, their lives spanning two countries and two languages. Authors María Teresa de la Piedra, Blanca Araujo, and Alberto Esquinca examine language practices and funds of knowledge these students use as learning resources to navigate through their binational, dual language school experiences. The authors, who themselves live and work on the border, question artificially created cultural and linguistic borders. To explore this issue, they employed participant-observation, focus groups, and individual interviews with teachers, administrators, and staff members to construct rich understandings of the experiences of transfronterizx students. These ethnographic accounts of their daily lives counter entrenched deficit perspectives about transnational learners. Drawing on border theory, immigration and border studies, funds of knowledge, and multimodal literacies, Educating Across Borders is a critical contribution toward the formation of a theory of physical and metaphorical border crossings that ethnic minoritized students in U.S. schools must make as they traverse the educational system.

Building Walls puts the recent calls to build a border wall along the US-Mexico border into a larger social and historical context. This book describes the building of walls, symbolic and physical, between Americans and Mexicans, as well as the consequences that these walls have in the lives of immigrants and Latin communities in the United States. The book is divided into three parts: categorical thinking, anti-immigrant speech, and immigration as an experience. The sections discuss how the idea of the nation-state itself constructs borders, how political strategy and racist ideologies reinforce the idea of irreconcilable differences between whites and Latinos, and how immigrants and their families overcome their struggles to continue living in America. They analyze historical precedents, normative frameworks, divisive discourses, and contemporary daily interactions between whites and Latin individuals. It discusses the debates on how to name people of Latin American origin and the framing of immigrants as a threat and contrasts them to the experiences of migrants and border residents.
