Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in the midst of a crisis of home. It is evident in the massive uprooting and migration of millions across the globe, in the anxious nationalism awaiting immigrants in their destinations, in the unhoused populations in wealthy cities, in the fractured households of families, and in the worldwide destruction of habitats and international struggles for dominance. It is evident, perhaps more quietly but just as truly, in the aching sense that there is nowhere we truly belong. In this moment, the Christian faith has been disappointingly inept in its response. We need a better witness to the God who created, loves, and reconciles this world, who comes to dwell among us. This book tells the "story of everything" in which God creates the world as the home for humans and for God in communion with God's creatures. The authors render the story of creation, redemption, and consummation through the lens of God's homemaking work and show the theological fruit of telling the story this way. The result is a vision that can inspire creative Christian living in our various homes today in faithfulness to God's ongoing work.

By contrast, the idea that we have an eternal identity appeals to some deep intuition about the self. And indeed, belief in the soul's pre-mortal existence has a long history in Western thought. Terryl Givens offers the first systematic exploration of this fascinating if generally unfamiliar feature of Western cultural history.

Book excerpt: Given the prominence of prayer in traditional Jewish life, it is surprising to note how few prayers the Torah actually ordains be recited by the pious as part of their ongoing effort to foster a relationship with the Divine. Indeed, some of the most famous of all Jewish prayers that do have their origin in Scripture are not presented as liturgical texts in that context at all. (The Shema, for example, the confession of faith par excellence which rabbinic tradition ordains be recited twice daily, appears in the Bible as part of a larger literary unit with no indication that it is intended to be featured prominently in the prayer lives of the faithful.) Other prayer texts are presented in situ as features of an ongoing narrative—for example, the prayer of Damesek Eliezer that he find a wife for his master’s son (Genesis 24:12–14) or Moses’ prayer that Miriam be healed of her skin disease (Numbers 12:13)—have not come to be a part of the fixed Jewish liturgical tradition. And still others, like the prayer ordained for recitation by farmers presenting their first fruits at the sanctuary (Deuteronomy 26:3–10), are presented as liturgical texts to be recited on a specific occasion, but with no hint that they may licitly be recited in circumstances other than the ones specifically ordained by Scripture.

Book excerpt: The Pearl of Greatest Price narrates the history of Mormonism's fourth volume of scripture, canonized in 1880 as The Pearl of Great Price. The authors track its predecessors, describe its several components, and assess their theological significance within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From the disputed origins of Smith's "Book of Abraham," to perceived discrepancies between Smith's canonized visionary account and other versions, the status of this text is vital to the church's present health and future prospects.

Book excerpt: Do you ever feel like youre wandering in a wilderness alone? Are you searching for the same freedom the children of Israel sought, only to find oppression at every turn? Are you looking for a life filled with promise, only to be repeatedly disappointed? You are not alone. We are all on a journey, from slavery to sin to the ultimate Promised Land in Heaven, where we will be free. Everything in between is a wilderness experience. Moses expounded on freedom in the wilderness. He explained exactly where to find it and how to get there. He clearly spoke to the Jew and the foreigner. The question is: Does He speak to the Christian as well? In her book Finding Freedom, Dr. Stundahl will wander through the wilderness of Deuteronomy and explore the Hebraic roots of Christianity. Finding Freedom reveals the concepts of the Torah, assembled in the same format in which they were studied by the Jewish communities since the Babylonian exile. These concepts include humility, idolatry, evil speech, teaching, learning, remembering and listening. The analysis of each portion of the Torah considers its applicability to the life of a Christian. As the history of Christianity and the Jewish elements of the Gospel are discovered, the shadows of Jesus Christ are revealed. Wherever you are in the wilderness of your life, you too can find the freedom intended just for you! Experience the reading, the writing, and the dance of the Torah.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906–95) was one of the most original Jewish thinkers of the twentieth century. This book interprets the Hebrew Bible through the lens of Levinas's religious philosophy. Richard I. Sugarman examines the Pentateuch using a phenomenological approach, drawing on both Levinas's philosophical and Jewish writings. Sugarman puts Levinas in conversation with biblical commentators both classical and modern, including Rashi, Maimonides, Sforno, Hirsch, and Soloveitchik. He particularly highlights Levinas's work on the Talmud and the Holocaust. Levinas's reading is situated against the background of a renewed understanding of such phenomena as covenant, promise, different modalities of time, and justice. The volume is organized to reflect the fifty-four portions of the Torah read during the Jewish liturgical year. A preface provides an overview of Levinas's life, approach, and place in contemporary Jewish thought. The reader emerges with a deeper understanding of both the Torah and the philosophy of a key Jewish thinker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh interpretation of the nature, purpose, and date of Jerome’s Epistle 106 In this volume of the Writings from the Greco-Roman World series, Michael Graves offers the first accessible English translation and commentary on Jerome’s Epistle 106, an important work of patristic biblical interpretation. In his treatise Jerome discusses different textual and exegetical options according to various Greek and Latin copies of the Psalms with input from the Hebrew. Epistle 106 provides insightful commentary on the Gallican Psalter, Jerome’s translation of Origen’s hexaplaric edition. Jerome’s work offers a unique window into the complex textual state of the Psalter in the late fourth century and serves as an outstanding example of ancient philological scholarship on the Bible. Graves’s translation and commentary is an essential resource for scholars and students of patristic exegesis, biblical textual criticism, and late antique Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those seeking a fresh, contemporary approach to the stories and themes of Genesis, this book offers an inspiring gateway into the heart of the ancient text. Both newcomers and seasoned readers will benefit from Rabbi Leila Gal Berner’s invitation to personal contemplation. Basing her work on a Christian method of reading Scripture—lectio divina (reading the holy)—Rabbi Berner’s adaptation for Jews as kriat ha-kodesh (reading the sacred) is welcoming and accessible to readers of all faiths. After retelling each story from a very human perspective, Rabbi Berner advances rabbinic perspectives that have illuminated each biblical saga over the centuries. In addition, she brings the text to life with contemporary stories of real people whose experiences echo the biblical stories. A final section to each chapter suggests probing questions for personal contemplation and meditation, which can be used both by individual readers as part of a spiritual practice and also by groups of spiritual seekers. Group leaders will find a helpful facilitator’s guide to structure their sessions. Beginning with Rabbi Berner’s own classes, groups have formed throughout North America using her method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God gave the Torah to Moses and our ancestors at Mount Sinai thousands of years ago, and we’ve been studying it ever since. Rabbi Charna S. Klein continues the tradition in this scholarly work, interpreting the Torah’s fifty-four chapters in Inside the Torah. Klein presents interpretations from ancient Sages to modern commentators and adds original rabbinic interpretations on important topics such as creation, evolution, societal development, gender, sexual diversity, and more. The author also applies scientific lenses, including cultural, archeological, physical and medical anthropology to explicate hidden meanings in the Biblical text. Meant for Jews and non-Jews, the book is a significant contribution on the interpretation of the Torah from the perspectives of Chassidus and the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah, its concepts, structures, and meaning. Rabbi Klein encourages the Jewish people as inheritors of the Mosaic tradition to connect with God and repair ourselves and the world. Awaken, know, delve deep and reach high to make yourself a vessel for good.
