Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Botany: A Practical Guide, to the Classification of Plants, With a Popular Flora The First Book of Botany, published in 1870, was prepared as a contribution to better methods in object teaching. It was not designed as a text-book of Botany but plants were chosen as objects of study, because they offer special and unequaled advantages for training in Oh servation. It provided that the whole work of the learner should be upon his specimens; that he should find out and record the plant-characters for himself, and thus get ima\ portant practice in self-education. But it was soon seen that, in thus cultivating the ob serving powers, we were laying the true foundation for a real knowledge of Botanical Science; and the desire was often expressed that this method of studying plants should be carried out more fully. Accordingly, the Second Book of Botany was prepared upon the same plan. It has, however, been found desirable, for the sake of beginners in the science who are too old for primary lessons, that the abridged contents of the First Book should be pre fixed to the Second Book, and also that completeness as a Descriptive Botany should be given to the work, by adding to it a popular Flora. In thus combining the exer cises of the former volumes, they have not been materially changed. They provide for the direct study of all those features of plants which are used in classification, and illustrate by practical examples the use to be made of these observations in systematic botany. The ideas given in those works, concerning the value of this Study in men tal training, are therefore equally applicable here. Book excerpt: "The book strikes a balance between classical fundamental information and the recent developments in plant systematics. Special attention has been devoted to the information on botanical nomenclature, identification and phylogeny of angiosperms with numerous relevant examples and detailed explanation of the important nomenclatural problems. An attempt has been made to present a continuity between orthodox and contemporary identification methods by working on a common example. The methods of identification using computers have been further explored to help better online identification. The chapter on cladistic methods has been totally revised, and molecular systematics discussed in considerable detail."--Jacket.

This book contains numerous cladograms that illustrate the evolutionary relationships of major plant groups, with an emphasis on the adaptive significance of major evolutionary novelties. It provides descriptions and classifications of major groups of angiosperms, including over 90 flowering plant families; a comprehensive glossary of plant morphological terms, as well as appendices on botanical illustration and plant descriptions. Pedagogy includes review questions, exercises, and references that complement each chapter. This text is ideal for graduate and undergraduate students in botany, plant taxonomy, plant systematics, plant pathology, ecology as well as faculty and researchers in any of the plant sciences. Book excerpt: It gives us great pleasure to present the book – “Angiosperms, Histology, Anatomy and Embryology” which is based on UGC model curriculum and as per B. Sc. Botany syllabus of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. According to the First Year B. Sc. Botany syllabus the portion Morphology of Angiosperms is for first semester while for second semester Histology, Anatomy and Embryology topics are included. This book is revision of the earlier book published in print form and idea behind publishing this e-book is that students can get the study material at home. So, whole subject matter has been divided into five chapters. The text is written in simple language which can easily be grasped by students. To make subject easy and understandable, profusely illustrated and self-explanatory diagrams have been added, which are drawn by Miss. Sakshi Sharma. Book excerpt: Modern angiosperm taxonomy or systematics provides a strong foundation for the progress of biological sciences as it incorporates studies on biosystematics, chemical and serological evidences, numerical taxonomy, cytogenetical and ecological evidences and many others. This book accounts for information on classical and fundamental aspects of taxonomy as well as its recent developments. Special attention has been paid to the chapters on origin of Angiosperms, Theory of Evolution and Evolutionary trends in Angiosperm Flowers. The International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, Important herbaria, Techniques for the preparation, storage and study of herbarium specimens, Botanical gardens, and Taxonomic literature are discussed in detail and includes the study of some selected families belonging to 21 orders. For each family, general features and evidence from anatomical, embryological, chromosome numbers and phytochemical data have been added and evolutionary trends discussed. Attention has also been drawn to economic importance and geographical distribution of these families. Illustrations for some members of these families have also been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.
