Book excerpt: Storage reservoirs represent one of the most effective tools for eliminating, or at least for minimizing, discrepancies in the time and space variations of water resources distribution and requirements. In fact, the different - often contradictory - and increasing demands on water resources utilization and control usually can be fulfilled only by building multi-purpose reservoir systems. In this way, the available water resources can be exploited and/or managed in a more rational way. Typically, the construction of a dam across a river valley causes water to accumulate in a reservoir behind the dam; the volume of water accumulated in the reservoir will depend, in part, on the dimensions of the dam. The size of the dam will normally affect the capital expenditure in a very significant way. Indeed the construction of large water resource control systems - such as dams - generally involves rather huge manpower and material outlays. Consequently, the elaboration of effectual methods of approach that can be used in establishing the optimal reservoir parameters is of great practical significance. For instance, in the design and operation oflarge multi-reservoir systems, simple simulation and/or optimization models that can identify potentially cost effective and efficient system design are highly desirable. But it should be recognized that the problem of finding optimal capacities for multi-reservoir systems often becomes computationally complex because of the large number of feasible configurations that usually need to be analyzed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River Flow 2022 includes the keynote lecture and contributed papers presented at River Flow 2022, the 11th International Conference on Fluvial Hydraulics (8-10 November 2022, Kingston and Ottawa, Canada; held virtually). River Flow 2022 provides an overview of the latest experimental, theoretical and computational findings on fundamental river flow and transport processes, river morphology and morphodynamics, while covering also issues related to the effects of hydraulic structures on flow regime, river morphology and ecology; sustainable river engineering practices (including stream restoration and re-naturalization); and effects of climate change including extreme flood events. The book presents the state-of-the-art in river research and engineering, and is aimed at academics and practitioners in hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering.
Book Synopsis Industrial Water Resource Management by : Pradip K. Sengupta
Download or read book Industrial Water Resource Management written by Pradip K. Sengupta and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides the tools that allow companies to understand the fundamental concepts of water resource management and to take proper action towards sustainable development Businesses, communities, and ecosystems everywhere depend on clean freshwater to survive and prosper. When the same source of water is shared for economic, social, and environmental causes it becomes the responsibility of every sector to develop a sustainable water strategy beneficial for all. This book offers a water resource management plan for industries that is directly implementable and consistent with the Water Framework Directives of different countries with a special emphasis on developing countries—a plan that is economically efficient, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable. Industrial Water Resource Management, Challenges and Opportunities for Efficient Water Stewardship offers explicit technical and investment solutions, socioeconomic and legal instruments, and recommendations for institutional restructuring. Written by a leading world expert in the field, it covers a wide range of topics including: ● Source water assessment and protection ● Water audit, industrial water footprint assessment—an evaluation of tools and methodologies ● Corporate water disclosure methods and tools ● Water stewardship by the industries ● Stakeholder collaboration and engagement ● New technologies enabling companies to better manage water resources Given the well-known challenge of managing natural resources in a way that maximizes and sustains social welfare, this book provides an invaluable point of reference for applied researchers and policy makers working in water resources management.
