They make no claim, indeed, to be chemically pure; that is to say, they can not be guaranteed to give a true measure of every individual tested. Any mental test is sure to' be vitiated in some cases either by peculiarities of an individual's training and information, or by the accidental variations to which mental performance is subject from moment to moment. These sources of error exist in all measurements of intellectual abilities. In the face of such diffi culties, some investigators have felt it necessary to retreat from a quantitative attack on individual psychology; while others, more hopeful, have sought to neutralize the error of the single measurement by statistical methods. In the study of class differ ences, they have relied on averages from large groups; and in the study of correlations, they have endeavored to correct for the attenuation resulting from chance errors in the single measure ments. But either reliance on the averages of large groups or reliance on Spearman's attenuation formulae is a reliance on probability, and therefore sure to be justified in the long run, but equally sure to be treacherous somewhere or other. Certainly, therefore, it is wise to eliminate from the tests all possible sources of error; though other sources of error still remain, yet for every defect eliminated there is an increase in the reliability of the in dividual measure, and so of the final result. Now most of the tests hitherto employed involve sources of error which can be eliminated once they are detected in practise. Many of these Sources of error are little details in the construction of the tests; for example, one or two of the words selected as stimuli may have been ambiguous, or unfamiliar to many subjects. Our work has very largely consisted in attention to such details; and while we cannot hope to have attained perfection of detail, we are sure that we have taken some steps in that direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Mental Tests: A Further Revision and Extension of the Binet-Simon Scale Again, it has become clear to the writer that the method of scoring adopted in the Binet - Simon system often proves to be inaccurate, for the reason that the judgment of the scorer is the main factor in determining the value of the response to a test. In the writer's experiments, the plan has been tried of having several examiners pres ent during the examination of a subject. Each examiner has estimated the value of every response. Often these estimates have differed because each examiner has been more or less biased in interpreting a subject's responses: and so the predilections and mental attitude of the exam iner has alwavs to be taken account of in the results of an examination. These variable factors will of course render any scale for the measurement of intelligence somewhat unreliable. In attempting to correct these defects in the Binet Simon system, the writer has tested some devices of his own, and he has tried out suggestions made by others who have revised the binet-simon scale. In the process of looking about for a revision of the scale which would give a larger place to actual performance as compared with linguistic response, and which would insure a higher degree of accuracy in scoring the results of an examina tion, the writer came across the revision by Kuhlmann. Who has developed a modified binet-simon scale as an outgrowth of his work at the School for the Feeble - Minded. Faribault, Minnesota. It seemed to the writer, upon exam ination of the Ixuhlmann revision, that the two chief de feets in the sinet-simon scale had been remedied more adequately and satisfactorily than had been accomplished in any other revision. The writer consulted persons in different parts of the country who had been using the Kuhlmann scale, not onlv in respect to the two major points mentioned above. But also in regard to minor details. And their testimony confirmed his own convie tion; - that Dr. Kuhlmann has succeeded in producing a very useful scale for the measurement of intelligence.
