As part of the Foundation’s multifaceted activities—which range from seminars and an advanced training initiative for French doctoral students to joint programs with international organizations an associations—FNEGE partnered with ISEOR to sponsor a series of workshops on developing high quality intervention-research. This volume is one of the results from that endeavor. Although intervention-research helps to uncover valuable insight into organizational dynamics and performance, the challenge of capturing and disseminating that insight to both academics and practitioners is entrenched in the rigor-relevance debate. While we are witnessing increased calls for “actionable knowledge,” this ideal, unfortunately, remains a rather elusive concept as critics contend either that rigorous academic research falls well-short of relevance to the practitioner world or research that proves to be valuable to practitioners falls short of the rigor expected in academic life. This volume is intended to help bridge that divide. The Invisible Community uses recent data from a variety of fields to explore who these immigrants are and what they and their families require to become members of an inclusive society. Experts from Canadian and international universities and governmental and community agencies describe how South Asian immigrants experience life in French-speaking Canada. They look at how members of the community integrate into the job market, how they manage socially and emotionally, how their religious values are affected, and how their children adapt to French-speaking and English-speaking schools. Book excerpt: Le travail social, durement touché par de multiples réformes, restrictions budgétaires et nouvelles exigences, se heurte depuis longtemps à des difficultés pour faire reconnaître tout à la fois sa légitimité, son utilité sociale et sa capacité à produire de la connaissance. Pourtant, il existe des « savoirs d’action » irréductibles aux connaissances académiques. Mais les enjeux intellectuels autour des notions de savoir, de science, de recherche croisent des enjeux de pouvoir, renvoient à des rapports de domination réels ou fantasmés, suscitent des divergences qui finissent par nuire à la valorisation du travail social. Il faut donc redéfinir les liens entre la recherche et le travail social. Plusieurs associations, laboratoires, organismes, personnalités françaises et étrangères, avec le soutien de la Direction générale de la cohésion sociale, ont fait le pari d’un large débat pour dégager des points d’accord sur cette question. Cette conférence de consensus a initié un processus marqué notamment par la prise en considération des apports internationaux et par la mise en place d’une formation doctorale spécifi que au travail social.
