Book excerpt: A follow up work on previous books, this edition speaks about exsiting standards for inspection and cleaning a fiber optic connection. Current standards are important, but also outdated at the time they are published. For rapidly evolving industries such as fiber optics, an existing standard can take five to seven years of expert input and then is in place for as long as ten years. For industries such as fiber optic high speed and ever increasing capacities if these standards are not outdated at the time they are published, surely they are at the end of their ten year life cycle! This book discusses various cleaning methods and procedures and proposes a new type standard that may be applicable and important for all such industries. The work goes on to discuss "best practice" in a way to "future proof" one of the most critical functions of a fiber optic deployment: testing which has accuracy in the actual cleaning process. The work has an open-ended invitation to all readers to participate in this new standards process which can begin as an Internet "blog" and then be approved by Subject Matter Experts before annual updates after an initial publication. Based on valuable existing standards, the author projects a six month time frame to initiate this new "Rapid Technology Standard".

Book excerpt: Covers the fundamental science of grinding and polishing by examining the chemical and mechanical interactions over many scale lengths Manufacturing next generation optics has been, and will continue to be, enablers for enhancing the performance of advanced laser, imaging, and spectroscopy systems. This book reexamines the age-old field of optical fabrication from a materials-science perspective, specifically the multiple, complex interactions between the workpiece (optic), slurry, and lap. It also describes novel characterization and fabrication techniques to improve and better understand the optical fabrication process, ultimately leading to higher quality optics with higher yield. Materials Science and Technology of Optical Fabrication is divided into two major parts. The first part describes the phenomena and corresponding process parameters affecting both the grinding and polishing processes during optical fabrication. It then relates them to the critical resulting properties of the optic (surface quality, surface figure, surface roughness, and material removal rate). The second part of the book covers a number of related topics including: developed forensic tools used to increase yield of optics with respect to surface quality (scratch/dig) and fracture loss; novel characterization and fabrication techniques used to understand/quantify the fundamental phenomena described in the first part of the book; novel and recent optical fabrication processes and their connection with the fundamental interactions; and finally, special techniques utilized to fabricate optics with high damage resistance. Focuses on the fundamentals of grinding and polishing, from a materials science viewpoint, by studying the chemical and mechanical interactions/phenomena over many scale lengths between the workpiece, slurry, and lap Explains how these phenomena affect the major characteristics of the optic workpiece—namely surface figure, surface quality, surface roughness, and material removal rate Describes methods to improve the major characteristics of the workpiece as well as improve process yield, such as through fractography and scratch forensics Covers novel characterization and fabrication techniques used to understand and quantify the fundamental phenomena of various aspects of the workpiece or fabrication process Details novel and recent optical fabrication processes and their connection with the fundamental interactions Materials Science and Technology of Optical Fabrication is an excellent guidebook for process engineers, fabrication engineers, manufacturing engineers, optical scientists, and opticians in the optical fabrication industry. It will also be helpful for students studying material science and applied optics/photonics.

Forrest, Jr. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-20 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fiber Optic "End Face"...is the "business end" of any and all fiber optic transmissions. It is the condition of this surface that assures maximum transmission speeds. Not unlike a 'dirty window', if this surface is soiled, damaged, or, improperly cleaned, some level of transmission reliability will be compromised. FTTx or Aerospace, all transmission types share the common bond of surfaces that must be pristine-clean. Ed Forrest has studied cleaning "things" beginning with his first career stop as a technical representative for Prestone(R) branded products. He found himself under the hood of a 1974 prototype GM car...in 1968. The issue at the time was higher operating temperatures for a world facing gasoline shortages and growing environmental concerns. Engine blocks were sand cast. Radiators often had sand residues and corroded from leaking exhaust gas. In 1990, as industrial chemicals changed in response to global CFC-mandates, he began a new career in electronics production, service, repair and clean room sciences. These change-overs required new methods and procedures. He understands change-over procedures and applies The Scientific Method to his research. In 1998, as fiber optics began to emerge, and to this time, he has been challenged by end users who are not satisfied with available ways and means to precision clean fiber optic surfaces. To prove a new thesis, Ed invented a new means to inspect the surfaces. This digital photograph is one of more than 3,000 images that prove the point: there is more to a fiber optic connector than an end face! This is the latest and most detailed study of existing methods and procedures for fiber optic inspection and cleaning. As the Industry faces ever-higher expectations for the ever-evolving technologies of fiber optic sciences, there is need for clarity and a higher standard. The work is an important update to existing methods and procedures and is written in conversational style with logical conclusions to advance the work of network designers, installers and trainers.

This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis unites the fields of optical atomic clocks and ultracold molecular science, laying the foundation for optical molecular measurements of unprecedented precision. Building upon optical manipulation techniques developed by the atomic clock community, this work delves into attaining surgical control of molecular quantum states. The thesis develops two experimental observables that one can measure with optical-lattice-trapped ultracold molecules: extremely narrow optical spectra, and angular distributions of photofragments that are ejected when the diatomic molecules are dissociated by laser light pulses. The former allows molecular spectroscopy approaching the level of atomic clocks, leading into molecular metrology and tests of fundamental physics. The latter opens the field of ultracold chemistry through observation of quantum effects such as matter-wave interference of photofragments and tunneling through reaction barriers. The thesis also describes a discovery of a new method of thermometry that can be used near absolute zero temperatures for particles lacking cycling transitions, solving a long-standing experimental problem in atomic and molecular physics.
