Book excerpt: In the second part of the book, the chemical, the mineralogical composition and the microfabrics of concretes and related materials are discussed. An illustrated guide to the features that can be observed and identified using a petrological microscope is given. There is an extensive review of the defects, deterioration and failures which can occur in concrete together with the observations and petrographic evidence relating to them. Extensive use has been made of illustrative examples in colour which together with appropriate discussion will assist the engineer as well as both the trainee and experienced petrographer in understanding the nature of the evidence which is basic to petrographic analysis. An extensive glossary of optical and other properties of minerals found in concretes completes this practical handbook.
Book Synopsis Petrographic Examination by : Richard C. Mielenz
Download or read book Petrographic Examination written by Richard C. Mielenz and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrographic examination of concrete aggregate is visual examination and analysis in terms of both lithology and properties of the individual particles. The procedure requires use of a hand lens and Petrographic and stereoscopic microscopes; less commonly, X-ray diffraction or differential thermal analysis is used to supplement the microscopical examination. By Petrographic examination, the relative abundance of specific types of rocks and minerals is established; the physical and chemical attributes of each, such as particle shape, surface texture, pore characteristics, hardness, and potential alkali reactivity, are described; coatings are identified and described; and the presence of contaminating substances is determined. As will be discussed subsequently, Petrographic examination contributes in several ways to the investigation, selection, testing, and control of aggregates. Consequently, the method is being progressively more widely applied. Since 1936, all aggregates used in concrete construction by the Bureau of Reclamation have been examined petrographically as a part of the basis for their selection [1]. The method has been applied similarly by the Corps of Engineers since before 1940 [2]. Coarse aggregates proposed for use in either portland-cement concrete or bituminous concrete are examined by Petrographic methods in laboratories of the Ontario Department of Highways, and specifications governing acceptance are based upon the results [3]. Petrographic examination of aggregates is performed also by several other agencies of the U.S. government and state highway departments, and may be obtained through some commercial laboratories. In 1952, the ASTM accepted a Tentative Recommended Practice for Petrographic Examination of Aggregates for Concrete (C 295), which was adopted as a standard in 1954. Minor modifications were made in 1964. Petrographic examination is cited in the ASTM Specifications for Concrete Aggregates (C 33).
Book Synopsis Petrographic Atlas: Characterisation of Aggregates Regarding Potential Reactivity to Alkalis by : Isabel Fernandes
Download or read book Petrographic Atlas: Characterisation of Aggregates Regarding Potential Reactivity to Alkalis written by Isabel Fernandes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This RILEM AAR 1.2 Atlas is complementary to the petrographic method described in RILEM AAR 1.1. It is designed and intended to assist in the identification of alkali-reactive rock types in concrete aggregate by thin-section petrography. Additional issues include: • optical thin-section petrography conforming to RILEM AAR 1.1 is considered the prime assessment method for aggregate materials, being effective regarding cost and time. Unequivocal identification of minerals in very-fine grained rock types may however require use of supplementary methods. • the atlas adheres to internationally adopted schemes for rock classification and nomenclature, as recommended in AAR 1.1. Thus, rock types are classified as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic based upon mineral content, microstructure and texture/fabric. • in addition, the atlas identifies known alkali-reactive silica types in each rock type presented. It also identifies consistent coincidence between certain lithologies and silica types; however, it refrains from attributing alkali-reactivity to a specific silica property or quality. • operator skill and experience remain essential for reliable assessment by thin-section petrography. • aggregate materials must be classified according to local criteria, based on regional experiences with ASR-damaged field structures and geology. Access to additional data may be relevant for the assessment of imported materials. • mere application of rock nomenclature does not provide any sort of warranty to the development of deleterious alkali-reaction. Such may result in either rejection of a suitable aggregate material, thus wasting a valuable resource, or acceptance of an unsuitable material leading to concrete damage, both of which are undesirable.

Book excerpt: Bringing together in one volume the latest research and information, this book provides a detailed guide to the selection and use of aggregates in concrete. After an introduction defining the purpose and role of aggregates in concrete, the authors present an overview of aggregate sources and production techniques, followed by a detailed study of their physical, mechanical and chemical properties. This knowledge is then applied to the use of aggregates in both plastic and hardened concretes, and in the overall mix design. Special aggregates and their applications are discussed in detail, as are the current main specifications, standards and tests.

Download or read book Quantitative Petrographic Evaluation of Fine Aggregate written by PP. Hudec and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petrographic examination of coarse aggregate is accepted as a viable method for predicting its durability in concrete. No similar quantitative method existed for fine aggregate, although Guide for Petrographic Examination of Aggregates for Concrete (ASTM C 295) does yield preliminary information of durability of fine aggregate. This paper proposes a quantitative petrographic analysis that can be used to quickly assess the natural fine aggregate's durability when used in concrete. The method of analysis is essentially the Ministry of Transportation, Ontario LS-616, which separates the fine aggregate into silicate, carbonate, shale and chert fractions. The weighted percentages of these fractions were statistically compared to standard physical tests, including water adsorption and absorption, dry density, magnesium sulfate loss, and micro-Deval abrasion loss. Step-wise multiple regression equations were developed, which allowed calculation of expected magnesium sulfate and micro-Deval abrasion losses based on the proportion of the petrographic types. Mathematical and statistical techniques were also used to establish a petrographic number for sand (PNS) that allows the classification of aggregate into good or poor categories based on their petrographic composition.
