Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2014 Brittingham Prize in Poetry, selected by Naomi Shihab Nye The word tyrant carries negative connotations, but in this new collection, Joanne Diaz tries to understand what makes tyranny so compelling, even seductive. These dynamic, funny, often poignant poems investigate the nature of tyranny in all of its forms political, cultural, familial, and erotic. Poems about Stalin, Lenin, and Castro appear beside poems about deeply personal histories. The result is a powerful exploration of desire, grief, and loss in a world where private relationships are always illuminated and informed by larger, more despotic forces. Winner, Midwest Book Award for Poetry, Midwest Independent Publishers Association"
Book Synopsis An Introduction to African Philosophy by : Sam O. Imbo
Download or read book An Introduction to African Philosophy written by Sam O. Imbo and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1998-03-26 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized topically rather than historically, this book provides an excellent introduction to the subject of African Philosophy. Samuel Oluoch Imbo synthesizes the ideas of key African philosophers into an accessible narrative. The author focuses on five central questions: What are the definitions of African philosophy? Is ethno-philosophy really philosophy? What are the dangers of an African philosophy that claims to be 'unique'? Can African philosophy be done in foreign languages such as English and French? Are there useful ways to make connections between African philosophy, African American philosophy, and women's studies? By making cross-disciplinary and transnational connections, Imbo stakes out an important place for African philosophy. Imbo's book is an invaluable introduction to this dynamic and growing area of study.

Book Synopsis African Symbols, Proverbs, and Myths by : Raphael Okechukwu Madu
Download or read book African Symbols, Proverbs, and Myths written by Raphael Okechukwu Madu and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of final destiny remains one of the most perplexing issues in all cultures. After this life, what next? Deeply researched, this book examines Igbo symbols, proverbs and myths and demonstrates their significance as man's pronouncements upon himself; self-confession in the understanding of the African conception of human destiny. It shows, too, that a large part of what traditional Africans believe is couched in symbolic language. Since what is conveyed in language, albeit symbolism, is often not very obvious, the book offers new insights into the relationship between language and Hermeneutics. Using semantics as the axis of reference, it reveals the «accumulative intentions» characteristic of African symbolic forms and the this-life-centredness of their conception of human destiny.

Book Synopsis Between Daily Routine and Violent Protest by : Ernst Wolff
Download or read book Between Daily Routine and Violent Protest written by Ernst Wolff and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most human action has a technical dimension. This book examines four components of this technical dimension. First, in all actions, various individual, organizational or institutional agents combine actional capabilities with tools, institutions, infrastructure and other elements by means of which they act. Second, the deployment of capabilities and means is permeated by ethical aspirations and hesitancies. Third, all domains of action are affected by these ethical dilemmas. Fourth, the dimensions of the technicity of action are typical of human life in general, and not just a regional or culturally specific phenomenon. In this study, an interdisciplinary approach is adopted to encompass the broad anthropological scope of this study and combine this bigger picture with detailed attention to the socio-historical particularities of action as it plays out in different contexts. Hermeneutics (the philosophical inquiry into the human phenomena of meaning, understanding and interpretation) and social science (as the study of all human affairs) are the two main disciplinary orientations of this book. This study clarifies the technical dimension of the entire spectrum of human action ranging from daily routine to the extreme of violent protest.

Brilliantly, he has demonstrated that African philosophy, through his discussion of the cosmos-theologies of Ancient Egypt, is the genesis of most of the fundamental questions regarding the enigma of God and humanity. I cannot praise this work enough as of first importance in the reconstruction of Africa's place in human sciences". (Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, Professor, Temple University; USA).

Book Synopsis Linguistique de la métonymie by : Marc Bonhomme
Download or read book Linguistique de la métonymie written by Marc Bonhomme and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1987 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis African Philosophy Essential Read by : Tsenay Serequeberhan
Download or read book African Philosophy Essential Read written by Tsenay Serequeberhan and published by Paragon House Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleven papers in this anthology, all by Africans, represent a variety of philosophical positions that are central to the debate in and on African philosophy as it has developed thus far. An introduction essay explores the historical, political, and existential context of the debate, and is followed by a presentation of the "documentary" orientation (ethnophilosophy). The five papers that follow articulate positions that reject ethnophilosophy and emphasize it "scientistic" approach to philosophy. Finally, the last four papers articulate philosophical positions reflecting the historicity of the African situation. Throughout, the anthology is informed by the belief that African philosophy is a historically engaged activity aimed at the political empowerment of the African people. Many of the papers in African Philosophy are either published here or in English for the first time, or are not easily available in English anywhere else.
