Book excerpt: Five years after the Geriatric Brigade’s departure from Earth, a new generation Antarean Mothership has returned. The crew, made up of Antareans and Brigade members, was on a dual mission to extract the sleeping cocooned Antarean army and deliver a wondrous cargo, which included twenty-two pregnant Brigade female “seniors” and one young pregnant Penditan bride to give birth on Earth. The physical processing that had prepared the Geriatric Brigade for deep space travel had stopped, and then slowly reversed, the physiological mechanics of human aging. Among deep space travelers there exists one overriding directive regarding the birth of interplanetary offspring, especially those of a “mixed mating.” This directive requires that these Brigade mothers-to-be return to Earth to give birth. While the cocooned Antarean army was extracted from their secret underwater chamber, the children of the Geriatric Brigade were born. Even as infants, it was clear that the children of the Geriatric Brigade were evolved—a new race possessing new and extraordinary powers. But how these wondrous gifts would affect the children, and their future, was still unknown. Metamorphosis is the sequel to the New York Times bestselling Cocoon trilogy and continues where Cocoon left off—keeping you hooked from the first page and never letting go. Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. Download or read book Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafka and published by Diamond Pocket Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Kafka, the author has very nicely narrated the story of Gregou Samsa who wakes up one day to discover that he has metamorphosed into a bug. The book concerns itself with the themes of alienation and existentialism. The author has written many important stories, including The Judgement, and much of his novels Amerika, The Castle, The Hunger Artist. Many of his stories were published during his lifetime but many were not. Over the course of the 1920s and 30s Kafkas works were published and translated instantly becoming landmarks of twentieth-century literature. Ironically, the story ends on an optimistic note, as the family puts itself back together. The style of the book epitomizes Kafkas writing. Kafka very interestingly, used to present an impossible situation, such as a mans transformation into an insect, and develop the story from there with perfect realism and intense attention to detail. The Metamorphosis is an autobiographical piece of writing, and we find that parts of the story reflect Kafkas own life.

Download or read book Cocoon written by David Saperstein and published by Talos. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years before the start of the Earth’s third Christian millennium, after a five-thousand-year absence, Antarean space travelers have returned to Earth. After the destruction by the impact of an asteroid, a few islands were all that remained of the continent above the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Before the asteroid’s impact destroyed Antares Quad-Three, they had cocooned and secreted a diplomatic army for future use on Earth. They believed these soldiers and commanders, numbering 941, were secure and safe in a state of suspended animation beneath the sea floor. But, sadly, the Antareans discovered that pollution and ultraviolet radiation had adversely affected the cocoons, making the life they held partially damaged and dangerously vulnerable. On arrival to the destroyed planet, the Antarean presence was discovered by a small group of retired humans. Once discovered, the seniors offered to help the Antareans reseal their damaged cocoons and return them to their underwater chamber, saving the diplomatic army to be revived and awakened in the future. To show their gratitude, the Antarean leaders invited their aged helpers to join them on their Mothership, and thus become Earth’s first deep space travelers. They called themselves the Geriatric Brigade. Cocoon, which was a New York Times bestseller upon its release (and an Academy Award–winning film of the same name), is the amazing beginning of the Cocoon trilogy, which spans twenty years and was a pioneering science fiction novel by David Saperstein that still resonates with audiences today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we perdure when we and everything around us are caught up in incessant change? But the course of this change does not seem to be haphazard and we may seek the modalities of its Logos in the transformations in which it occurs. The classic term 'Metamorphosis' focuses upon the proportions between the transformed and the retained, the principles of sameness and otherness. Applied to life and its becoming, metamorphosis pinpoints the proportions between the vital and the aesthetic significance of life. Where could this metaphysical in-between territory come better to light than in the Fine Arts? In this collection are investigated the various proportions between the vital significance of the constructivism of life and a specifically human contribution made by the creative imagination to the transformatory search for beauty and aesthetic values. Book Synopsis Metamorphosis in Fish by : Sylvie Dufour
Download or read book Metamorphosis in Fish written by Sylvie Dufour and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers current data on the two types of fish metamorphoses and their endocrine controls. It will be of interest for fish biologists as well as comparative physiologists and endocrinologists. Metamorphosis is a major developmental phase characterized by morphological and physiological changes. It prepares organisms for a drastic shift in habitat and behavior. Among vertebrates, besides the well-known larval metamorphosis in amphibians, two types of metamorphosis are also described in the life cycle of some fish species. Larval metamorphosis, also called first metamorphosis or true metamorphosis, is encountered in lampreys, representative species of basal vertebrates as well as in some teleost groups, elopomorphs and pleuronectiforms, and possibly also in some other teleost species. Secondary metamorphosis occurs in juveniles of some diadromic migratory teleosts, such as salmons and eels, and compared to larval metamorphosis, involves less drastic morphological changes.
Download or read book Uther written by Jack Whyte and published by Forge Books. This book was released on 2001-12-09 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Uther, Jack Whyte, author of the richly praised Camulod Chronicles, has given us a portrait of Uther Pendragon, Merlyn's shadow--his boyhood companion and closest friend. And the man who would sire the King of the Britons. From the trials of boyhood to the new cloak of adult responsibility, we see Uther with fresh eyes. He will travel the length of the land, have adventures, and, through fate or tragedy, fall in love with the one woman he must not have. Uther is a compelling love story and, like the other books in the Camulod Chronicles, a version of the legend that is more realistic than anything that has been available to readers before. The book discusses insect metamorphosis as a key innovation in insect evolution. With most of the present biodiversity on Earth composed of metamorphosing insects—approximately 1 million species currently described, with another 10-30 million still waiting to be discovered, the book delves into misconceptions and past treatments. In addition, the topic of integrating insect metamorphosis into the theory of evolution by natural selection as noted by Darwin in his On the Origin of Species is also discussed. Users will find this to be a comprehensive and updated review on insect metamorphosis, covering biological, physiological and molecular facets, with an emphasis on evolutionary aspects. - Features updated knowledge from the past decade on the mechanisms of action of juvenile hormone, the main doorkeeper of insect metamorphosis - Aids researchers in entomology or developmental biology dealing with specialized aspects of metamorphosis - Provides applied entomologists with recently updated data, especially on regulation, to better face the problems of pest control and management - Gives general evolutionary biologists context on the process of metamorphosis in its larger scope
