Book Synopsis The Hellfest - A Pilgrimage for Metalheads by : Corentin CHARBONNIER
Download or read book The Hellfest - A Pilgrimage for Metalheads written by Corentin CHARBONNIER and published by Corentin Charbonnier. This book was released on with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study presented here shows, through the analysis of the Hellfest, an annual metal music festival held in Clisson in the Loire-Atlantique region of France, that this music constitutes a true culture. To understand the current position the Hellfest holds for the metal community, it is necessary to know its evolution since its creation, to examine the relationships it promotes between the festivalgoers themselves, and between the festivalgoers and the artists, and to examine its role as a place where a community with no real geographical foothold can be united during a given period of time. The various sociabilities that are experienced at the Hellfest cannot be understood without taking an interest in the particular economy set up by the organisers, an economy that contributes to the recognition of the event and influences its sociabilities. The organisers have had and are committed to addressing the wishes of the festivalgoers of all subgenres of metal music, making them actors and not just mere consumers and involving local economic actors as well. The Hellfest allows each metalhead to take a break from his or her life in a particular space, for a defined period of time, offering everyone the opportunity to assert or reassert his or her identity through different rituals. It is thus the pilgrimage of the entire metal community

Download or read book Metalheads written by Jörg Brüggemann and published by Die Gestalten Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives and passion of heavy metal fans around the world captured in vivid images. Heavy metal is a phenomenon. Although this musical genre is still ridiculed by many, it is currently more popular and successful around the world than at its supposed peak in the 1980s. Today, so-called metalheads can be found worldwide. No matter who they are or where they come from, they are united by heavy metal across borders, generations, genders, religions, and social classes. The photographer Jörg Brüggemann traveled to Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, Egypt, and the USA to shoot pictures of heavy metal fans. Metalheads is a collection of the resulting images, which strikingly portray them and their passion. The atmosphere of concerts and clubs is captured with such authenticity that viewers can practically smell the beer and sweat, and hear a ringing in their ears. The photography in Metalheads is complemented by informative texts that put the global metal scene into context, share personal experiences, and describe the evolution of this musical genre from its humble beginnings until the present day.

Book Synopsis Metal, Rock, and Jazz by : Harris M. Berger
Download or read book Metal, Rock, and Jazz written by Harris M. Berger and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively comparison of musical meaning in Ohio's Jazz, metal, and hard rock scene. This vivid ethnography of the musical lives of heavy metal, rock, and jazz musicians in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio shows how musicians engage with the world of sound to forge meaningful experiences of music. Unlike most popular music studies, which only provide a scholar's view, this book is based on intensive fieldwork and hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews. Rich descriptions of the musical life of metal bars and jazz clubs get readers close to the people who make and listen to the music. Of special interest are Harris M. Berger's interviews with Timmy "The Ripper" Owens, now famous as lead singer for the pioneering heavy metal band, Judas Priest. Owens and other performers share their own experiences of the music, thereby challenging traditional notions of harmony and musical structure. Using ideas from practice theory and phenomenology, Berger shows that musical perception is a kind of practice, both creatively achieved by the listener and profoundly informed by social context.

Bands like Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, and Guns N' Roses were at the height of their popularity, and she landed right in the middle of the heavy-metal music scene. Welcomed by sunshine and possibilities, her California adventure began the very first day she arrived in magical Laurel Canyon. Soon, she was working in the music industry, and then for Metal Blade Records. Working with her favorite bands and witnessing music history was a dream come true. Los Angeles turned into a dark force, forcing her to make tough choices in order to survive. This is a story of big magic, following your heart, and starting over. Anna-Marie is a real-life librarian, and a lifelong fan of heavy metal and rock music. This is Adventures of a Metalhead Librarian.
Download or read book Heavy Metal written by Deena Weinstein and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-08-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few forms of music elicit such strong reactions as does heavy metal. Embraced by millions of fans, it has also attracted a chorus of critics, who have denounced it as a corrupter of youth—even blamed it for tragedies like the murders at Columbine. Deena Weinstein argues that these fears stem from a deep misunderstanding of the energetic, rebellious culture of metal, which she analyzes, explains, and defends. She interprets all aspects of the metal world—the music and its makers, its fans, its dress code, its lyrics—and in the process unravels the myths, misconceptions, and truths about an irreverent subculture that has endured and evolved for twenty years.

Download or read book The Music Sound written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 6042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide for music: compositions, events, forms, genres, groups, history, industry, instruments, language, live music, musicians, songs, musicology, techniques, terminology , theory, music video. Music is a human activity which involves structured and audible sounds, which is used for artistic or aesthetic, entertainment, or ceremonial purposes. The traditional or classical European aspects of music often listed are those elements given primacy in European-influenced classical music: melody, harmony, rhythm, tone color/timbre, and form. A more comprehensive list is given by stating the aspects of sound: pitch, timbre, loudness, and duration. Common terms used to discuss particular pieces include melody, which is a succession of notes heard as some sort of unit; chord, which is a simultaneity of notes heard as some sort of unit; chord progression, which is a succession of chords (simultaneity succession); harmony, which is the relationship between two or more pitches; counterpoint, which is the simultaneity and organization of different melodies; and rhythm, which is the organization of the durational aspects of music.
Download or read book Rocking Islam written by Fatma Sagir and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2021 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has the universal power to move individuals, peoples and societies. Music is one of the most important signifiers of cultural change. It is also most significant for youth movements and youth cultures. While Islam has a historically and traditionally rich culture of music, religious controversy on the topic of music is still ongoing. However, young Muslims in today's globalised world seek pop cultural tools such as music, and particularly hip hop music, as way of exploring and expressing their manifold identities, whilst challenging Islamophobia, stigma and racism on the one hand and traditional and religious challenges on the other hand. In this volume, following an international conference with the same title, scholars and young academics from a variety of disciplines seek to explore and highlight the phenomena surrounding the two, somewhat artificially separated, realms of music and religion. The contributions not only look into different genres of music, from Tunisian metal over German female hip hop to Egyptian folk, but take the reader on a journey from continent to countries to cities and rural areas and thus give space and time to a widely neglected area of research: that of Muslim popular culture and young Muslims.
