Book excerpt: Trench art is the evocative but misleading name given to a dazzling array of objects associated mainly with the First World War and the inter-war years (191439). Many items are recycled battlefield debris, notably artillery shell cases, often decorated with Art Nouveau motifs. Other objects, made from bullets and shrapnel, include letter-openers, cigarette lighters, enigmatic crucifixes, and artful miniature aeroplanes and tanks. Equally ingenious are talismanic and 'sweetheart' jewellery, embroideries, and items carved from stone, bone and wood. This book describes the different types of trench art, the techniques used to make them, and their historical and personal values to the soldiers, prisoners-of-war and families who made and bought them. Long ignored, trench art reveals a lost world of the Great War and its aftermath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lavishly illustrated with exotic images ranging from Renoir's forgotten Algerian oeuvre to the abstract vision of Matisse's Morocco and beyond, this book is the first history of Orientalist art during the period of high modernism. Roger Benjamin, drawing on a decade of research in untapped archives, introduces many unfamiliar paintings, posters, miniatures, and panoramas and discovers an art movement closely bound to French colonial expansion. Orientalist Aesthetics approaches the visual culture of exoticism by ranging across the decorative arts, colonial museums, traveling scholarships, and art criticism in the Salons of Paris and Algiers. Benjamin's rediscovery of the important Society of French Orientalist Painters provides a critical context for understanding a lush body of work, including that of indigenous Algerian artists never before discussed in English. The painter-critic Eugène Fromentin tackled the unfamiliar atmospheric conditions of the desert, Etienne Dinet sought a more truthful mode of ethnographic painting by converting to Islam, and Mohammed Racim melded the Persian miniature with Western perspective. Benjamin considers armchair Orientalists concocting dreams from studio bric-à-brac, naturalists who spent years living in the oases of the Sahara, and Fauve and Cubist travelers who transposed the discoveries of the Parisian Salons to create decors of indigenous figures and tropical plants. The network that linked these artists with writers and museum curators was influenced by a complex web of tourism, rapid travel across the Mediterranean, and the march of modernity into a colonized culture. Orientalist Aesthetics shows how colonial policy affected aesthetics, how Europeans visualized cultural difference, and how indigenous artists in turn manipulated Western visual languages.

Book excerpt: The Art of the Crusaders in the Holy Land, 1098-1187 examines the art and architecture produced for the Crusaders in Syria-Palestine during the first century of their quest to recapture Jerusalem. Commissioned by kings and queens, patriarchs and bishops, knights and merchants, who came as pilgrims or settlers to the Holy Land, it is an art of manuscript illumination, fresco painting, mosaics, stone sculpture, metalwork, ivory carving, coins and seals by artists trained in the Latin West, and the Byzantine and Islamic East. Combining the stylistic and iconographic traditions of these regions, Crusader art defies easy categorization: indeed, it is a unique phenomenon within the spectrum of medieval art.

Book excerpt: "Enamelling was used in the medieval period to embellish the most revered objects -- the altarpieces and reliquaries of cathedrals, the crowns and drinking cups of kings. The technique of enalling, fusing coloured glass to a metal surface by intense heat, enabled the metalworker to create an enduring polychrome image and to tell a story as forcefully as any painter. The V&A has an outstanding collection of pre-Renaissance enamels, ranging in date from Roman times to the fifteenth century and in country of origin from Ireland to Constantinople. Few of them have previously been reproduced and this colourful introduction, revealing a little of their beauty, explains the historical and artistic context of their manufacture." - back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Translated from the French by Peter Manson. THE POEMS IN VERSE is Peter Manson's translation of The Poésies of Stéphane Mallarmé. Long overshadowed by Mallarmé's theoretical writings and by his legendary visual poem "Un coup de Dés jamais n'abolira le Hasard," the Poésies are lyrics of a uniquely prescient and generative modernity. Grounded in a scrupulous sounding of the complex ambiguities of the original poems, Manson's English translations draw on the resources of the most innovative poetries of our own time these may be the first translations really to trust the English language to bear the full weight of Mallarméan complexity. With THE POEMS IN VERSE, Mallarmé's voice is at last brought back, with all its incisive strangeness, into the conversation it started a hundred and fifty years ago, called contemporary poetry."

Book excerpt: The brilliant architect and designer Ettore Sottsass "made glass" from 1947 until the end of his career. This volume documents the entire period of his glass oeuvre, from the series he designed in the 1970s for Vistosi to the Memphis collections of the 1980s, the symbolic forms of the 1990s, the stunning constructions for the Millennium House in Qatar, and the famous Kachinas. The wealth of images, the analysis of design and painting together with the coeval cultural and artistic context, and the summary of works including many unpublished pieces make this volume edited by Luca Massimo Barbero the first scientific study on Ettore Sottsass's works in glass and crystal
