Book excerpt: In 1969 when Metabolism of Pesticides was published, it was still possible to condense the information into one volume. The continued growth of interest in the subject and the attendant volume of literature precluded such a condensation for the present volume. Consequently, this volume was prepared as an update and supplement. Readers are advised that a considerable body of literature may have been published during the time required to prepare and print the present volume.

Book excerpt: Biotransformation of Pesticides is an updated, "one-stop" resource for academic, industry and regulatory scientists involved in research and regulatory activities related to pesticide biotransformation and human health. This book provides an in depth look at how pesticides are biotransformed, which is essential to understanding exposure, dose, toxicity and health risks. This essential reference contains the biotransformation of pesticides from uptake to excretion, including toxicokinetics and emphasizes metabolism in non-target species, including experimental animals and humans. Includes four new chapters and expanded material on pesticide biotransformation and disposition, an active area of pesticide toxicology that is becoming increasingly important for human health risk assessment Offers a practical and portable guide covering the most up-to-date research results on metabolic transformations of pesticides Provides scientists and regulatory researchers with the information they need to conduct accurate risk assessments and make informed decisions on which exposures to study further in human populations

Book excerpt: The EPA commissioned The National Academies to provide advice on the vexing question of whether and, if so, under what circumstances EPA should accept and consider intentional human dosing studies conducted by companies or other sources outside the agency (so-called third parties) to gather evidence relating to the risks of a chemical or the conditions under which exposure to it could be judged safe. This report recommends that such studies be conducted and used for regulatory purposes only if all of several strict conditions are met, including the following: The study is necessary and scientifically valid, meaning that it addresses an important regulatory question that can't be answered with animal studies or nondosing human studies; The societal benefits of the study outweigh any anticipated risks to participants. At no time, even when benefits beyond improved regulation exist, can a human dosing study be justified that is anticipated to cause lasting harm to study participants; and All recognized ethical standards and procedures for protecting the interests of study participants are observed. In addition, EPA should establish a Human Studies Review Board (HSRB) to evaluate all human dosing studiesâ€"both at the beginning and upon completion of the experimentsâ€"if they are carried out with the intent of affecting the agency's policy-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important publication provides a comprehensive summary of data and information on the metabolism and chemical degradation of agrochemicals in soils, plants and animals. Part 1, Herbicides and Plant Growth Regulators, and Part 2, Insecticides and Fungicides, together provide a major bibliography, as each entry is fully referenced. Contents include metabolic products, pathways and mechanisms, together with useful details on physico-chemical properties and mode of action. Both parts are organised by class of chemical for easy reference. There are separate entries for each pesticide, covering most commercially available chemicals in use today. In addition, an overview of the metabolism of each major class provides the reader with an informed summary of key similarities and significant differences between individual chemicals. Information is based primarily on literature from the past 40 years of research, together with some important, previously unpublished work provided by the agrochemical companies. Presented in a systematic, easy-to-read style, with extensive indexing to facilitate the rapid location of required information and the comparison of related compounds, Metabolic Pathways of Agrochemicals is an invaluable reference for chemists, biochemists and biologists working in the discovery, development and registration of agrochemicals, as well as scientists in related areas such as design and mode of action of pharmaceuticals.

Book excerpt: One of the most difficult areas of toxicology is the extrapolation of results obtained from experimental animals to man. The common occurrence of species differences in a number of biological processes confounds this extapolation. The metabolism of pesticides, drugs and other foreign compounds is a very important determinant of their toxicological effects. An understanding of species differences in metabolism and the ability to predict or to study directly the metabolic fate of a pesticide in man therefore are of great value in the validation of animal models for man. This review is concerned with the factors affecting species differences in the metabolism of foreign compounds in experimental animals and man. Additionally, specific examples of the metabolism of pesticides, drugs and industrial chemicals in man are assessed and the approaches to the execution of metabolism studies in humans, proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fate of Pesticides in Large Animals covers the proceedings of the 1976 Fate of Pesticides in Large Animals symposium. The symposium is held at the Centennial Meeting of American Chemical Society and sponsored by the Pesticide Chemistry Division of the ACS. It aims to focus on the fate of pesticides in large animals and to assemble a thesis on the subject covering its theoretical and practical significance. In this book, large animals are particularly considered, because they often metabolize chemicals differently than small laboratory rodents. These differences may prove a basis for the development of concepts pertinent to the phenomenon of selective toxicity. This book is divided into three sections encompassing 14 chapters. The first section delineates the rationale of the symposium and presents topics applicable to all facets of large animal metabolism. The second section focuses on comparative metabolism of selected groups of pesticides, including phenoxy herbicides, insect growth regulators, fungicides, and halogenated hydrocarbons. The third section deals with specific compounds and/or specific large animal species. It includes mirex, chlordane, dieldrin, and polychlorinated biphenyls; p,p'-DDT and p,p'-DDE in pig; phenyl N,N'-dimethylphosphorodiamidate; croneton; and Vacor rodenticide. This book is an invaluable resource for chemists, biochemists, researchers, and toxicologists.
