Book Synopsis The Origins of War by : Matthew A. Shadle
Download or read book The Origins of War written by Matthew A. Shadle and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debate rages within the Catholic Church about the ethics of war and peace, but the simple question of why wars begin is too often neglected. Catholics’ assumptions about the causes of conflict are almost always drawn uncritically from international relations theory—a field dominated by liberalism, realism, and Marxism—which is not always consistent with Catholic theology. In The Origins of War, Matthew A. Shadle examines several sources to better understand why war happens. His retrieval of biblical literature and the teachings of figures from church tradition sets the course for the book. Shadle then explores the growing awareness of historical consciousness within the Catholic tradition—the way beliefs and actions are shaped by time, place, and culture. He examines the work of contemporary Catholic thinkers like Pope John Paul II, Jacques Maritain, John Courtney Murray, Dorothy Day, Brian Hehir, and George Weigel. In the constructive part of the book, Shadle analyzes the movement within international relations theory known as constructivism—which proposes that war is largely governed by a set of socially constructed and cultural influences. Constructivism, Shadle claims, presents a way of interpreting international politics that is highly amenable to a Catholic worldview and can provide a new direction for the Christian vocation of peacemaking.
Book Synopsis Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria by : Thaddeus Byimui Umaru
Download or read book Christian-Muslim Dialogue In Northern Nigeria written by Thaddeus Byimui Umaru and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion as a powerful impulse in human existence plays a paradoxical role in society as it both contributes significantly in shaping the spiritual, socio-political and economic lives of millions of people and also acts as a source of conflict. The sad experience of interreligious conflict in Northern Nigeria challenges the claim of Islam and Christianity to be religions of peace. However, understood as closely intertwined with culture and custom of a people, religion can be central in the establishment of peace and conflict resolution in and between communities. This text using the model of dialogue (Nostra Aetate) explores and presents the socio-political and theological resources available in Northern Nigeria (the locality) for a consistent peace building process.

Book Synopsis Trinity in Unity in Christian-Muslim Relations by : Risto Jukko
Download or read book Trinity in Unity in Christian-Muslim Relations written by Risto Jukko and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian-Muslim relations are one of the major issues in contemporary theology of religions. This book deals with the theological foundations that have been laid for these relations in the recent official documents (1966-2005) of the Secretariat for Non-Christians/the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. There is a continuous interrelationship in recent Roman Catholic thinking between philosophy (existentialism and personalism) and theology ("nouvelle théologie" and "kerygmatic theology"). This study shows that the doctrine of the Trinitarian nature of God is the cornerstone on which this documentation rests, and that the Trinitarian dimension of Roman Catholic theology of religions will challenge the Christology of 21st century theology.

This book includes a unique autobiography by Barbour in which for the first time he shares and reflects on his life and work, and a detailed bibliography of Barbour's works. Together, the authors demonstrate how Barbour's writings and the hundreds of scholars who have now become part of the field have changed the course of intellectual history in the West by making possible and necessary a truly constructive engagement between science and religion in the context of inter-religious dialogue and the global human and environmental challenges of our time.

Book Synopsis These Liberties We Hold Sacred by : Carl Anderson
Download or read book These Liberties We Hold Sacred written by Carl Anderson and published by Square One Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in this nation’s history, America was populated by many different faith-based communities, each in search of a place to practice its religion. Initially, there was conflict, but by the time our Founding Fathers were ready to establish an independent nation, the idea of religious tolerance had become deeply ingrained in this brave new country’s design. So much so that when the United States Constitution was ratified, it contained a document known as The Bill of Rights—ten amendments detailing the rights of this country’s citizens. And the very First Amendment states,“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . . .” Here lies the foundation of the principle for the separation of state and religion. Over the past few decades, however, the power of the state has usurped a growing number of rights clearly ascribed to those who wish to practice their faith. This has certainly not gone unnoticed by many religious organizations. As the supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, Carl Anderson has taken an active role in highlighting—and protecting against–this ever-growing governmental infringement over fundamental religious freedom. Here in his latest book, These Liberties We Hold Sacred, New York Times best-selling author Carl Anderson has gathered together many of his most thought-provoking speeches, articles, and essays that lay bare the facts of this unjustified restriction of religious beliefs. The power of his words makes it clear that if nothing is done now, there will continue to be more erosion of these special freedoms set forth by our Founding Fathers. Carl Anderson has a gift for writing eloquently, understandably, and directly. His book These Liberties We Hold Sacred is a call to action to first understand what is happening to our religious and personal freedoms and then do all we can to hold on to these precious rights before more of them slip away.
Book Synopsis A Living Tradition by : A. Alexander Stummvoll
Download or read book A Living Tradition written by A. Alexander Stummvoll and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the world stage, the Holy See acts as both a religious and a political actor. As the head of over 1.2 billion Catholics, the pope is a widely recognized spiritual authority. Politically, the Holy See maintains diplomatic relations with other states and actively participates in international organizations such as the United Nations. A Living Tradition examines the normative sources and the dilemmas underpinning papal diplomacy. It does so in the context of four diverse case studies: the Vietnam War, John Paul II and Poland, the United Nations conferences in Cairo and Beijing, and the global campaign for debt relief. While Catholic Social Doctrine offers a principled basis for Holy See diplomacy, living out religious norms is more complicated than simply preaching them, especially in global politics. This process leads to political and ethical policy dilemmas as well as to changing patterns of conflict and cooperation with other international actors. By drawing upon unpublished archival documents from five countries, A Living Tradition offers a fresh and interdisciplinary view of both Catholic Social Doctrine and papal diplomacy that explores a key issue of the religious resurgence we are experiencing in the twenty-first century: how religious traditions function in global politics.
