Book excerpt: A collection of meso-scale analysis and forecasting techniques to aid the station forecaster in making improved short-range forecasts. These techniques include plotting and analysis of the pressure, temperature, streamline and upper air fields with methods to use these fields for forecasting. Even though these methods are not new this manuscript brings all the current techniques into one collection. (Author).

Book Synopsis Remote Sensing of Atmosphere and Ocean from Space: Models, Instruments and Techniques by : Frank S. Marzano
Download or read book Remote Sensing of Atmosphere and Ocean from Space: Models, Instruments and Techniques written by Frank S. Marzano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the lectures, held at the International Summer School ISSAOS-2000 in L'Aquila (Italy), given by invited lecturers coming from both Europe and the USA. The goal of the book is to provide a broad panorama of spaceborne remote sensing techniques, at both microwave and visible-infrared bands and by both active and passive sensors, for the retrieval of atmospheric and oceanic parameters. A significant emphasis is given to the physical modeling background, instrument potential and limitations, inversion methods and applications. Topics on international remote sensing programs and assimilation techniques into numerical weather forecast models are also touched. The main purpose of the book is to offer to young scientists, Ph.D. or equivalent students, and to all who would like to have a broad-spectrum understanding of spaceborne remote sensing capabilities, introductory material to each remote sensing topic written by the most qualified experts in the field.
Book Synopsis Mesoscale-Convective Processes in the Atmosphere by : Robert J. Trapp
Download or read book Mesoscale-Convective Processes in the Atmosphere written by Robert J. Trapp and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new textbook seeks to promote a deep yet accessible understanding of mesoscale-convective processes in the atmosphere. Mesoscale-convective processes are commonly manifested in the form of thunderstorms, which are fast evolving, inherently hazardous, and can assume a broad range of sizes and severity. Modern explanations of the convective-storm dynamics, and of the related development of tornadoes, damaging 'straight-line' winds and heavy rainfall, are provided. Students and weather professionals will benefit especially from unique chapters devoted to observations and measurements of mesoscale phenomena, mesoscale prediction and predictability, and dynamical feedbacks between mesoscale-convective processes and larger-scale motions.

Book Synopsis Mesoscale Analysis of Existing Meteorological Network Data by :
Download or read book Mesoscale Analysis of Existing Meteorological Network Data written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to investigate means for adapting existing airways and synoptic data to meso scale analysis as a basis for (a) Improving short term terminal forecasts and, (b) Prepara tion of a manual for local area analyses which could be used to facilitate the preparation of 0-3 hour terminal forecasts. The program in volved investigation of selected weather situa tions at six terminals which were chosen on the basis of the importance of the terminal, good geographic representation, and adequacy of the existing network of airways observing stations. A basic hypothesis under test was that the high time resolution of the recording instruments could be used to compensate for the poor spatial resolution of the existing airways network. The investigation was, therefore, structured to determine whether tendency-type information which could be transmitted by teletype could be employed usefull o sharpen the analysis and improve the forecast, and to devise and employ means for substituting the high time resolution of most meteorological observing systems for the poor spatial resolution of same.
