Book excerpt: It's illegal for mythical beings and humans to be together. However, laws can be broken. When human Ezekiel is discovered meandering the Elflands, the punishment for such an infringement between the species is certain death. Frantically, he lies to the mythical beings about his true intentions and reasons for being in the Elflands in the hope they will spare his life. A mythical being, Jenilia has zero faith in Ezekiel, not simply because he is human but because he speaks the language of man. In this language, lying is easy, but it is impossible in Elvish, her native tongue. Using her instincts alone, Jenilia decides to allow Ezekiel to live, teach him her native language, and then uncover the truth. Only during their journey together do they realise their true intentions towards each other, which are forbidden by the laws of the land. However, so much more is revealed when Ezekiel stumbles upon a sinister plot that threatens the Elflands and the mythical beings that despise his entire race. The fate of the Elflands is in the palm of his hands. Whichever decision Ezekiel makes affects not only him but Jenilia as well. Will he put his own life at risk to save a race that despises humans? Should he risk everything he's ever known to save the Elflands? You can find out in this fast-paced, thrilling fantasy novel, Mythical.

Book excerpt: La Magdalena draws on the largely overlooked and almost forgotten document of early history, The Gospel of Mary, to create a fictional account of Mary Magdalens teachings, her disciples and her relationship with Jeshua (best known to us as Jesus Christ). Mary is presented as a member of an early sect called the Theraputeae who understood ancient knowledge and intuitive wisdom. As the story progresses Mary and Jeshua face the challenges of his imminent death, and the journey Mary and her followers must subsequently make as concerns for her safety become paramount. The book contains familiar elements of human behaviour such as love, betrayal, joy and jealousy as we join Mary in her account of the events that took place over two millennia ago, events that could have had a very different outcome.

Book excerpt: Historical materialism as Marx understood this was always an integrated conception or field of research, not one divided into separate disciplines. The essays gathered in this volume are a remarkable example of how this works across a wide range of subjects as diverse as agrarian history, capitalism, Hegel’s influence on Marx, and class struggles in India. They were written over some fifty years of both activism and academic work, embodying Banaji’s lifelong engagement with Marxist theory. His recent papers on merchant capitalism can also be found here, along with a biographical sketch that sets all of his work in context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revised and extended version of the Great Mosaic Eye originally published in 2001. There have been major changes in neuroscience and in language research since then. Apparently disparate segments of research have started to come together and it is necessary to recast both the structure and the content of the book. The extended title of the book with the addition of the word Society reflects this. Another important change is that the book as originally published fell into two halves, part 1 being the text of the book and part 2 an inserted CD which included a great deal of additional material that made possible important graphical and video content not easily presented in text form. This new edition attempts to integrate all the material contained in the earlier edition but relying on links to the Internet for material in place of that contained in the inserted CD. This new book, as indeed was the case for the earlier version, was intended to bring together a mass of material which had been published separately over more than 40 years under the titles The Physical Foundation of Language (first published 1973 and recently reprinted), The Motor Theory of Language (1989), The Natural Origin of Language: The Structural Inter-relation of Language Vision and Action, The Child and the World: How the child acquires language - How language mirrors the world (2005). All these are now in print so that it is not necessary to repeat in this book much of the extensive discussion in the earlier books - all supplemented by other recent material readily accessible on the Internet at

Aware of the stakes, the Emperor hires Demetrios Askiates, the unveiler of mysteries, to catch the would-be-killer. But Demetrios is entering an unknown and mysterious world and must edge his way through a glittering maze of treachery and deceit before time runs out. Nor are all enemies within the city walls. With the Turks rampant across Asia, the Emperor has sent to the west for mercenaries to reinforce his position. When a great army, tens of thousands strong, appears before the gates, he gets more than he bargained for. The first crusaders have arrived, intent on making their fortunes in war, and they have no allegiance to an empire they eye with jealousy and suspicion. As the armies of east and west confront each other, and the assassin creeps ever closer to his prey, Demetrios must untangle the golden web of intrigue which surrounds the Emperor before the city - and the empire - are drowned in blood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the second and the sixth centuries of the common era, elaborate mosaics were designed and created to pave the floors of town homes and rural estates of the Roman settlements in North Africa. These stunning mosaics were especially widespread in the colony of Africa Proconsularis, modern-day Tunisia, and covered a wide range of subject matter: from scenes of daily life and classical mythology, to abstract floral and geometric designs of rare vibrancy and complexity. A distinctive African style emerged, whose influence would extend throughout the Mediterranean basin and beyond. This catalogue is being published to coincide with an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa from October 26, 2006, to April 30, 2007--the first major exhibition in the United States solely devoted to ancient mosaics. The twenty-seven mosaics in the exhibition come from Tunisia's leading museums, including the Bardo Museum in Tunis, the Sousse Museum and the El Jem Museum. Stories in Stone is structured around four principal themes--Nature, Theater and Spectacle, Myths and Gods, and Technique--and includes extensive material on mosaic conservation. In addition to color plates of all objects in the exhibit, this catalogue includes nine richly illustrated essays that illuminate the historical background of mosaic art, trace the development of principal themes, and examine the conservation of mosaics both in the museum setting and in situ. Contributors include Taher Ghalia, director of the Bardo Museum; Mongi Ennaifer, minister of cultural affairs, Tunisia; Thomas Roby, senior project specialist, Getty Conservation Institute; and Jerry Podany, head of antiquities conservation, J. Paul Getty Museum.
