This book argues we must look to the defining period of transition to understand how politics in these countries changed since the fall of dictatorial one-party states.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typology research is extremely important in both proposing classification frameworks and in promoting the careful investigation and analysis of the core concepts inherent within the classification contrasts employed. More exemplary of the latter aspect, the present collection of papers on the typology of writing systems address a number of significant linguistic and psycholinguistic issues surrounding the classification of writing systems. The seven contributions within this volume, which originally appeared as a special issue of Written Language and Literacy 14:1 (2011), cover a wide variety of issues, ranging from an overview of writing system typology research, comparative graphematics, letter-shape similarities, the morphographic principle, tone orthography typology, measuring graphematic transparency, to unconventional spellings within online chat. Reflecting the growing interest in writing, the book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers working on writing systems, written language, and reading research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creativity has become a central concept in trying to understand the contemporary economy. It is a universally accepted strategic asset and a key issue in developing economic policy. But at the same time, this lauding of the creative economy raises many questions. What can creativity really do for us? What challenges does it pose for the management and organization of companies? And, in an age when everyone tries to be creative, what does the concept even mean? This book deals with these issues, and is an engagement with the manifold ways in which creativity emerges as energy and functions as an organizing principle in modern organizations. The book presents a wide variety of approaches to understanding one of the most critical and exciting issues in modern management, with sections dedicated to the organization of innovation and creativity, leadership and management in creative endeavors, as well as creativity and organization change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a course in general topology, intended for students in the first year of the second cycle (in other words, students in their third univer sity year). The course was taught during the first semester of the 1979-80 academic year (three hours a week of lecture, four hours a week of guided work). Topology is the study of the notions of limit and continuity and thus is, in principle, very ancient. However, we shall limit ourselves to the origins of the theory since the nineteenth century. One of the sources of topology is the effort to clarify the theory of real-valued functions of a real variable: uniform continuity, uniform convergence, equicontinuity, Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem (this work is historically inseparable from the attempts to define with precision what the real numbers are). Cauchy was one of the pioneers in this direction, but the errors that slip into his work prove how hard it was to isolate the right concepts. Cantor came along a bit later; his researches into trigonometric series led him to study in detail sets of points of R (whence the concepts of open set and closed set in R, which in his work are intermingled with much subtler concepts). The foregoing alone does not justify the very general framework in which this course is set. The fact is that the concepts mentioned above have shown themselves to be useful for objects other than the real numbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed as a practical reference guide for professional pianists and piano teachers, A Guide to Piano Music by Women Composers, Volume I, is an annotated catalogue of the available piano music in print composed by 144 women born before the 20th century. The work also features biographies and extensive bibliographical information for each composer. Arranged alphabetically by composer into categories including single works, collections, and anthologies, the music is also described in terms of grade level, genre, mood, style characteristics, and technical requirements, and ranges in difficulty from late elementary to virtuoso concert repertoire. Far too many teachers, students, professional musicians, and audiences are unaware of the contributions made by women in music, and of the beauty and merit of their specific compositions. This reference work provides an invaluable addition to the current literature.

Book excerpt: The result of years of work by scholars from all over the world, The UNESCO General History of Africa reflects how the different peoples of Africa view their civilizations and shows the historical relationships between the various parts of the continent. Historical connections with other continents demonstrate Africa's contribution to the development of human civilization. Each volume is lavishly illustrated and contains a comprehensive bibliography. This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade--with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world. In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.

Book excerpt: The book treats free probability theory, which has been extensively developed since the early 1980s. The emphasis is put on entropy and the random matrix model approach. The volume is a unique presentation demonstrating the extensive interrelation between the topics. Wigner's theorem and its broad generalizations, such as asymptotic freeness of independent matrices, are explained in detail. Consistent throughout the book is the parallelism between the normal and semicircle laws. Voiculescu's multivariate free entropy theory is presented with full proofs and extends the results to unitary operators. Some applications to operator algebras are also given. Based on lectures given by the authors in Hungary, Japan, and Italy, the book is a good reference for mathematicians interested in free probability theory and can serve as a text for an advanced graduate course. This book brings together both new material and recent surveys on some topics in differential equations that are either directly relevant to, or closely associated with, mathematical physics. Its topics include asymptotic formulas for the ground-state energy of fermionic gas, renormalization ideas in quantum field theory from perturbations of the free Hamiltonian on the circle, $J$-selfadjoint Dirac operators, spectral theory of Schrodinger operators, inverse problems, isoperimetric inequalities in quantum mechanics, Hardy inequalities, and non-adiabatic transitions. Excellent survey articles on Dirichlet-Neumann inverse problems on manifolds (by Uhlmann), numerical investigations associated with Laplacian eigenvalues on planar regions (by Trefethen), Snell's law and propagation of singularities in the wave equation (by Vasy), random operators on tree graphs (by Aizenmann) make this book interesting and valuable for graduate students, young mathematicians, and physicists alike.
