Book excerpt: . . . of most interest to Bennet was Mr. Darcy of Pemberley. When Fitzwilliam Darcy attends the Meryton assembly, he befriends a quiet, intelligent gentleman. In frequent visits to his friend's home, he becomes acquainted with the Bennet family of Longbourn. Yet Mr. Darcy is distracted by a strange feeling of having met some of them before. This is a different Bennet family from the cleverly crafted one in Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. This Mr. Bennet is a responsible gentleman who takes an active role in the education and upbringing of all five of his daughters, manages Longbourn to be prosperous, and displays loving guidance toward Mrs. Bennet-a gentle, caring mother and wife. There is a mystery lurking at Longbourn-a secret unknown even to Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy is entangled in its extraordinary revelations. Who is Thomas Bennet? This book contains one brief scene of non explicit sexual violence that may be concerning to sensitive readers. The sexual violence does not include Elizabeth Bennet.

Book excerpt: When Jane Austen represented the ideal subject for a novel as "three or four families in a country village", rather than encouraging a narrow range of reference she may have meant that a tight focus was the best way of understanding the wider world. The essays in this collection research the historical significance of her many geographical references and suggest how contemporaries may have read them, whether as indications of the rapid development of national travel, or of Britain’s imperial status, or as signifiers of wealth and social class, or as symptomatic of political fears and aspirations. Specifically, the essays consider the representation of colonial mail-order wives and naval activities in the Mediterranean, the worrisome nomadism of contemporary capitalism, the complexity of her understanding of the actual places in which her fictions are set, her awareness of and eschewal of contemporary literary conventions, and the burden of the Austen family’s Kentish origins, the political implications of addresses in London and Northamptonshire. Skilful, detailed, and historically informed, these essays open domains of meaning in Austen’s texts that have often gone unseen by later readers but which were probably available to her coterie readers and clearly merit much closer critical attention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the loss of his eldest child and only son, Mr. Bennet swears that no Darcy will ever darken the doorstep of Longbourn again... Elizabeth Bennet is only a child when she meets Fitzwilliam Darcy under the most inauspicious of circumstances. Outside the constraints of adult society, they form a fast friendship that is severed almost immediately by Mr. Bennet and his anger at the death of his son, John Bennet. Thirteen years later, it is love-at-second-sight, at a masquerade in Meryton... No longer a girl, but a young woman out in society, Elizabeth attends a masquerade in Meryton, only to dance two sets with a gentleman that she does not recognize but feels uncommonly drawn to. There are newcomers to Hertfordshire, letting out Netherfield Park, and this quiet, tall gentleman with an aristocratic mien must be one of them, for she does not know his voice and his face is hidden by his mask, but his eyes... Elizabeth Bennet, who has sworn off of love for herself so that she may never feel the touch of grief again, falls deeply and irrevocably in love with those dark eyes that follow her across the assembly hall each time she looks up. The last time he saw her, she was but a wisp of a thing, in need of a kind word and a friend... Elizabeth Bennet has grown into the kind of beauty that would break hearts were she to stay any length of time in London, with a cleverness and wit that catches Mr. Darcy by surprise. He had not wanted to attend the masquerade, and now he both deeply regrets and rejoices all at once at his decision to go. But the woman who has caught his eye, and his heart, is the daughter of a man who cursed him and barred the Darcys from the Longbourn estate and forbade any kinship with the Bennets, forever. Darcy regrets ever coming back to Hertfordshire, for he knows that after one dance with Elizabeth Bennet, his heart is forsworn to her, and after two dances, his mind is set: he will marry her, or live the rest of his life alone. But he cannot court her as himself; no Darcy would ever be permitted to marry a Bennet, never-mind how desperate the situations at Longbourn might be. And so Mr. Darcy must become someone else, in order to be with the woman of his dreams, and hope that his deception will not be discovered. But with a familial patriarch barring the way, and skeletons amongst the ton waiting to descend with outstretched claws, will Mr. Darcy finally find his happiness? And if Elizabeth Bennet discovers his secret, will she still accept him? This is a sweet, clean romance suitable for all lovers of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Book excerpt: "You must allow me to tell you..."For over two hundred years, Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy has captivated readers' imaginations as the ultimate catch. Rich. Powerful. Noble. Handsome. And yet, as Miss Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is established through Elizabeth Bennet's fine eyes, how are we to know what his tortured soul is indeed thinking? How does Darcy progress from "She is tolerable: but not tolerable enough to tempt me" to "I thought only of you"? In this romantic anthology, sixteen Austen-inspired authors assemble to sketch Darcy's character through a series of re-imaginings, set in the Regency through contemporary times--all faithful narratives to the fanciful. Herein "The Darcy Monologues", the man himself reveals his intimate thoughts, his passionate dreams, and his journey to love--all told with a previously concealed wit and enduring charm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen's career as a novelist began in 1811 with the publication of Sense and Sensibility. Her work was finally adapted for the big screen with the 1940 filming of Pride and Prejudice (very successful at the box office). No other film adaptation of an Austen novel was made for theatrical release until 1995. Amazingly, during 1995 and 1996, six film and television adaptations appeared, first Clueless, then Persuasion, followed by Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, the Miramax Emma, and the Meridian/A&E Emma. This book traces the history of film and television adaptations (nearly 30 to date) of Jane Austen manuscripts, compares the adaptations to the manuscripts, compares the way different adaptations treat the novels, and analyzes the adaptations as examples of cinematic art. The first of seven chapters explains why the novels of Jane Austen have become a popular source of film and television adaptations. The following six chapters each cover one of Austen's novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main events of the novel. Then a history of the adaptations is presented followed by an analysis of the unique qualities of each adaptation, a comparison of these adaptations to each other and to the novels on which they are based, and a reflection of relevant film and literary criticism as it applies to the adaptations.
