Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent results from modeling and observational studies demonstrate that the tropical Atlantic is a critical region for processes that maintain the meridional overturning circulation, such as cross-equatorial exchanges, and for sea surface temperature variability that impacts on climate variability of the coupled tropical ocean/atmosphere system. The theme of this book is the inter-hemispheric and inter-gyre exchanges of heat, salt and fresh water, while its goal is to improve the knowledge of the tropical Atlantic dynamics and how it affects the global ocean. A clear understanding of the dynamics of processes that affect the flow of mass and heat between the southern and the northern hemispheres in the upper few hundred meters in the tropical Atlantic and of those associated to the ocean circulation or to surface signals, from decadal, inter-annual to mesoscale periods, becomes necessary to better evaluate their contribution to the interhemispheric mass exchange. These processes are believed to be largely responsible in driving the sea surface temperature, which in turn, is a critical parameter to investigate ocean-atmospheric interactions. Output produced by regional models is also used to complement the observations and to provide additional information on their spatial and temporal variability. The subtropical cells, by bringing water masses subducted in the subtropics to the equator, and zonal currents investigated here contribute to the interhemispheric water exchange. Special attention is also given to the warm and salty anticyclonic rings shed by the North Brazil Current, which are now known to have a much broader impact, not only on interhemispheric water mass transfer, but also on the environment of remote regions. Observations from different sources are blended together, are used to validate model outputs and are also assimilated into models to obtain a more complete and accurate picture of the oceanic circulation and of its time evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city is Macao, the Portuguese settlement on the China Coast, as it was more than 200 years ago. The promises are those made by Englishmen to marry their Macao mistresses, only to leave them abandoned and their children bastards. Martha Merop and her English lover are unique in this period. He, son of the founder of Lloyd's and cousin of the philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, was one of the first merchants to oppose the trade in opium. She, Chinese, abandoned at birth and sold into prostitution at the age of thirteen, became an international trader in her own right, the richest woman on the China Coast and Macao's greatest public benefactress. This moving novel that captures the time and place so convincingly is a historical reconstruction of the years 1780 to 1795 when the two were together. It is based on oral tradition handed down through generations in Macao, and on documents that survive about them in Macao, Lisbon and London. Austin Coates identified Martha Merop’s lover, about whom little was known. The documents about him confirmed the traditional Macao story, and the outcome was this book.

Book excerpt: In 1799, Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland set out to determine whether the Orinoco River connected with the Amazon. But what started as a trip to investigate a relatively minor geographical controversy became the basis of a five-year exploration throughout South America, Mexico, and Cuba. The discoveries amassed by Humboldt and Bonpland were staggering, and much of today’s knowledge of tropical zoology, botany, geography, and geology can be traced back to Humboldt’s numerous records of these expeditions. One of these accounts, Views of the Cordilleras and Monuments of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, firmly established Alexander von Humboldt as the founder of Mesoamerican studies. In Views of the Cordilleras—first published in French between 1810 and 1813—Humboldt weaves together magnificently engraved drawings and detailed texts to achieve multifaceted views of cultures and landscapes across the Americas. In doing so, he offers an alternative perspective on the New World, combating presumptions of its belatedness and inferiority by arguing that the “old” and the “new” world are of the same geological age. This critical edition of Views of the Cordilleras—the second volume in the Alexander von Humboldt in English series—contains a new, unabridged English translation of Humboldt’s French text, as well as annotations, a bibliography, and all sixty-nine plates from the original edition, many of them in color.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presented climate atlas follows with regard to structure and vol ume the Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean published 1985 by H.-J. Isemer and L. Hasse, which has become a standard work for the climate study community. A new edition was appropriate, since during the last decade much progress was achieved in the correct interpretation of the wind speed reported by merchant ships. As the wind speed is an essential parameter for the fundamental air-sea interactions, namely the exchange of momentum and energy between ocean and atmosphere, considerable impact on resulting climate key parameters as Sverdrup transport or meridional heat transport could be expected. Furthermore, individual ship observations are nowadays available from COADS, the Comprehensive Ocean Atmosphere Data Set, and, due to the grown computer power, these data are processable in reasonable time. Thus, improving the calculations of air-sea fluxes, as performed by Isemer and Hasse, is no longer a complex and tricky venture, since flux parameterizations can be applied directly to the ship observations. Compared to the Bunker Altas we expanded the considered sea area and included also the South Atlantic. Considering the entire Atlantic Ocean reveals not only interesting features of the southern hemisphere but allows also a finer assessment of the resulting energy fluxes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how key structures of classical architecture impact surgical anatomy, preoperative planning, and operative repair of CMF fractures, leading to improved outcomes. Buttresses are the basis for reduction and repair of craniomaxillofacial fractures and are essential for determining the optimal location, for placement of reparative plates and screws. Craniomaxillofacial Buttresses: Anatomy and Operative Repair endorses surgical anatomy as a basis for operative intervention. Special Features: "Buttresses" is the first book to coalesce the expertise of the five specialties involved in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) reconstruction after trauma - plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, ophthalmology, and neurosurgery. Parallels between architecture and CMF anatomy; basic biomechanics; and advanced finite analysis depict the distribution of impact (load-forces to-and-from the craniofacial skeleton) and the modern principles of operative repair A recurring, two-part format provides continuity, from chapter to chapter. Part 1 identifies the anatomy of a specific CMF region; Part 2 serially depicts clinical presentation, radiographic evaluation, modern techniques of operative repair, and potential collateral damage. Algorithms and illustrations, by renowned artist William Winn, reinforce a logical sequence of clinical management. Compelling preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative photographs and supplemental text illustrate exemplary repair. Key References for repair of each anatomic region are especially helpful, when managing complex injuries; Additional Biography allows the reader to efficiently delve further, in select cases. From the frontal boss to the lower jaw, this book is one-of-a-kind and brings together history, applied surgical anatomy, and operative techniques in the CMF region, in a way not seen since the classic by Reed O. Dingman and Paul Natvig, in 1964. An educational reference for medical students, residents, fellows, and clinicians, Craniomaxillofacial Buttresses: Anatomy and Operative Repair simplifies board review-and-study. From the foreword I by Robert M. Goldwyn, MD: [The text is] "gracefully written" every word has been chosen carefully. Seldom is a reader fortunate enough to find and learn from a book so much, so effortlessly." From the foreword II by Paul M. Manson, MD: "There are no facial fracture texts in any of the five specialties that deal with facial injury in this amount of detail; nor do they cover all of the craniofacial areas of modern interest, as does this text."

Book excerpt: The Atlantic Ocean plays a dominant role in the global climate system due to its unique thermohaline circulation: it is the only ocean in which heat is transported from the southern to the northern hemisphere, yielding the mild climate of Europe and influencing the climate system on the entire globe. The book primarily addresses oceanographers, meteorologists and the broad community working on climate research. With a few exceptions, mathematical descriptions are reduced to a minimum; the detailed explanation of the main current systems, the oceanic eddy fields and the interpretation of the general circulation by numeric models will also be of interest to neighboring disciplines. The book reviews the most recent advances in its field.
