Book Synopsis Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia by : Gerhard Gerold
Download or read book Land Use, Nature Conservation and the Stability of Rainforest Margins in Southeast Asia written by Gerhard Gerold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia constitutes one of the world's most extended rainforest regions. It is characterized by a high degree of biodiversity and contains a large variety of endemic species. Moreover, these forests provide a number of important and sin gular ecosystem services, like erosion protection and provision of high quality wa ter, which cannot be replaced by alternative ecosystems. However, various forms of encroachment, mostly those made by human interventions, seriously threaten the continuance of rainforests in this area. There is ample evidence that the rainforest resources, apart from large scale commercial logging, are exposed to danger particularly from its margin areas. These areas, which are characterized by intensive man-nature interaction, have been identified as extremely fragile systems. The dynamic equilibrium that bal ances human needs and interventions on the one hand, and natural regeneration capacity on the other, is at stake. The decrease of rainforest resources is, to a sub stantial degree, connected with the destabilization of these systems. Accordingly, the search for measures and processes, which prevent destabilization and promote stability is regarded as imperative. This refers to both the human and the natural part of the forest margin ecosystem.
Book Synopsis Social Science and Power in Indonesia by : Vedi R. Hadiz
Download or read book Social Science and Power in Indonesia written by Vedi R. Hadiz and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of Social Science and Power in Indonesia is that the role and development of social sciences in Indonesia over the past fifty years are inextricably related to the shifting requirements of power. What is researched and what is not, which frameworks achieve paradigmatic status while others are marginalized, and which kinds of social scientists become influential while others are ignored are all matters of power. These and other important themes and issues are critically explored by some of Indonesia's foremost social scientists in this seminal work.

Book Synopsis Transnational Agrarian Movements Confronting Globalization by : Saturnino M. Borras, Jr.
Download or read book Transnational Agrarian Movements Confronting Globalization written by Saturnino M. Borras, Jr. and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers of this book will encounter peasants and farmers who struggle at home and traverse national borders to challenge the World Trade Organization and other powerful global institutions. Here are activists in Brazil who uproot plots of genetically modified soybeans, forest dwellers in Indonesia who chop down rubber plantations to cultivate rice to feed their families, ‘runaway villages’ in China that take up arms to resist corrupt officials, and Mexican migrants who, having exited in desperation, return from abroad to transform their communities. Little-known transnational agrarian movements of the early twentieth century share the stage with more recent, high-profile global alliances, such as Vía Campesina. Rather than simply celebrating a dynamic sector of international civil society, the authors tackle thorny questions of successes and failures, ethical and political dilemmas, troubled alliances with NGOs, protest repertoires, and representation claims. The essays in Transnational Agrarian Movements Confronting Globalization analyze contemporary collective action in all its complexity, acknowledging ambiguities and contradictions, posing challenging questions, and providing concrete strategies for scholars and activists. Contributors include: Suraya Afiff, Xochitl Bada, Brenda Baletti, Saturnino M. Borras Jr, Marc Edelman, Jonathan Fox, Harriet Friedmann, Tamara M. Johnson, Cristóbal Kay, Kevin Malseed, Philip McMichael, Amber McNair, Peter Newell, Nancy Lee Peluso, Noer Fauzi Rachman, Ian Scoones, Kathy Le Mons Walker and Wendy Wolford.

This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 1600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book.Changes in law either from the meaning of normative substance, institutional, and legal culture are inevitably in line with the dynamics within various sectors of life society. Therefore, it is necessary to thoroughly discuss and analyze which sectors may have a significant impact on the business world and society today. By discussing comprehensively, comparatively and collaboratively, it is hoped that legal issues can be seen from various perspectives in the legal and social fields by finding fundamental problems in depth related to several topics of discussion, including in the telematics legal sector, natural resource management law, business legal culture, as well as the tourism sector. For this reason, APPTHI held a series of conferences in 3 cities to discuss and make it a meeting place for world law experts with law lecturers throughout Indonesia and invited lecturers from various countries, such as South Korea, India, Malaysia and Europe to take a part in this conference. The 1st APPTHI International Conference on Changing of Law (the series) is the first international conference series held in Indonesia by the Association of Indonesian Law College Leaders (APPTHI), inviting several legal experts from countries such as the USA, the Netherlands, Korea, Malaysia, India, as well as South Korea. This activity has 3 major themes each held in several cities, namely: in Jakarta which will be held at Trisakti University on 22 July 2023 with the theme Changing of Law in the digital era, while in Makassar it will take place at the Indonesian Muslim University/UMI) on July 24 2023 with the theme Changing of Law in the Energy sector and Natural Resources Management, as well as the last series of conferences in Bali on July 26 2023 at Warmadewa University, becoming a series of academic activities that have a broad spectrum and dimension of legal knowledge with various legal perspectives such as business law, corporate law, civil law, criminal law, intellectual property law, telematics law, agrarian law, environmental law, HTN/HAN etc. This event was carried out within the framework of the first round of the APPTHI international program which will continue to be held regularly every year. This program is also a form of implementation of various forms of international cooperation in several countries such as New York University, Utrecht University, National University of Malaysia, Hankuk University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. In this event APPTHI collaborated with the international program organizer, PASQAPRO. For the activities of The First APPTHI International Conference on Changing Law, The Series, involving campuses as co-hosts in Jakarta (hosted by Trisakti University), including: Jakarta Islamic University, Universitas Suryakancana, cianjur, Lampung Mitra University, Palembang Law School STIHPADA, Islamic University Jakarta, Muhamadiyah University Jakarta, YARSI University, National University, Borobudur University, while co-hosted in Makassar (Host Indonesian Muslim University): Panca Bakti University, West Kalimantan, Sawerigading University, Christian University of Paulus, Makasar, Universitas Juanda, Bogor and Seventeen August University (UNTAG) Semarang, for Bali with the host university Warmadewa, assisted by co-hosts including: Caritas College of Law, Papua. Hopefully this conference will not only be a scientific forum for APPTHI members and various foreign partner universities by providing outputs in the form of indexed proceedings and journals, but also an event that will contribute thoughts in the field of law for the Indonesian government in conducting studies on legal changes positively as well as being a think tank for the formation of state laws and policies.
Book Synopsis The Journey Of Hydrology And Water Resources Management In The Tropics by : Sahid Susanto
Download or read book The Journey Of Hydrology And Water Resources Management In The Tropics written by Sahid Susanto and published by PT Kanisius. This book was released on with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of scientific papers from 1980 to 2021 in the fields of hydrology and water resource management to support environmentally sound of agricultural production process. This collection of scientific works is of course the result of decades of continuous research and already presented at various scientific meetings, nationally and internationally. This book is also a reflection of the author career as a lecturer at higher education institution as well as a scientist in his field. This book provides also a new perspective on the role of hydrology and water resource management, not only limited to the scope of the production process for raw materials of food, but also extending to bio-landscape architecture. This new view is a phenomenon of the development of science and technology to understand increasingly complex multi-sectoral problems so that they can be seen more clearly. The development of science and technology is also accompanied by the addition of variants of social, economic, cultural and even political problems. The solution approach can no longer be overcome by using only one disciplinary approach, but must go through various disciplines. The form can be multi-intra-inter-disciplinary. As a result, there is a slice between fields of science that must be accepted as a necessity. This is a phenomenon of a scientific paradigm shift that is triggered by the wider intersection between fields of science, thus providing new treasures, new spaces, and new ideas in placing overlapping scientific fields as a challenge.
