Book excerpt: In the 16 years since the publication of the second edition of this volume, psychological theory and research in mental retardation has continued to expand and extend scientific, theoretical, and clinical understanding of this most complex and challenging human condition. Explicit effort has been made to translate theory and research into useful and efficacious assessment, intervention, prevention, and policy actions. This third edition provides an opportunity to critique major conceptual developments and empirical research in an effort to stimulate further behavioral research of practical, social importance. The Handbook presents work by prominent contributors to a major scientific endeavor that has grown dramatically during the last three decades. The challenge for each author was to identify important theoretical and empirical issues, provide a critical, selective review of exemplary research, and discuss the questions that remain unanswered in each area. In short, the goal for this third edition was to consolidate the knowledge gained during the past 30 years and to present a blueprint for future research in mental retardation, the broader field of learning disabilities, and other developmental disorders such as autism. Providing totally different coverage and direction from the previous edition, this text fills a crucial instructional need in graduate courses related to the psychology of mental retardation. With its emphasis on psychological research and theory, it offers an important alternative to many available texts that primarily emphasize the application of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of good statistical information had been a major factor in the poor planning of services for the mentally handicapped in the late 1960s. The principal object of this book was to provide an accurate factual basis for the planning of future services. Originally published in 1972, this title is based on three years’ extensive research and consists primarily of statistical studies rather than case studies. There is a survey of facilities provided by hospitals for the mentally handicapped and a sample survey of three Hospital Regions indicating the characteristics and disabilities of the mentally handicapped inpatients. Also included are two cohort studies, one of the subsequent experience of patients after their first admittance to a hospital, and one of the subsequent experience of all first referrals to a Local Authority service. Both studies were carried out to determine trends in the patterns of care. This was the first time that cohort techniques had been applied in this field in this country. Since effective long-term planning depends upon the coordination of the work of Local Authorities and hospitals, it is unrealistic to divorce the need for hospital beds from community provision. This book, therefore, examined the present services for the mentally handicapped in the round. It is supplemented by an extensive bibliography and numerous tables and diagrams. As a result, it should be of particular interest to psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, hospital administrators, senior nursing staff and Local Authority social service administrators. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1972. The language used is reflective of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, this introductory text for those intending to work with slow learners was concerned with the practical implications of recent British and North American research in the field of psychology and education at the time. Slow learners are young people who for a variety of reasons, continuously or for long periods, under-function in terms of intelligence, educational attainment and social skills. This book offers a clear analysis of the problems facing slow learners, their psychology and the types of education open to them. Dr Brown reassesses the needs of disabled children and adults in the context of their families, with the emphasis on the practical level of activity and training possible for them. The aim is the integration of the disabled person in society, and the belief is that services for the disabled should be integrated, with no professional person working on an isolated basis, but as part of a multidisciplinary professional team. Design for individuals entering the field of teaching, particularly those concerned with special education, training and rehabilitation programmes, the book should also be of value to social workers, psychologists and other professional people working in the field, as well as to parents of disabled children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-Two Years presents the results of a unique longitudinal study of the first 22 years in the lives of more than 200 young people with varying degrees of mental retardation. By following their paths through available services, job histories, leisure activities, friendships, and marriages, the authors provide objective information about the quality of life of young people with mental retardation. The book makes a unique contribution by determining what factors in childhood predict who will and who will not require mental retardation services and, for those who disappear from services, why some fare better than others. Most important, the results help answer a question that haunts parents: "What will happen when my child grows up?" This study expands on an internationally acclaimed clinical and epidemiological study of children with mental retardation published in 1970. It provides prevalence rates by severity of mental retardation, gender, social class, and family stability, and shows how these change over time. The authors confirm the central role of biomedical factors in the etiology of severe mental retardation. For the etiology of mild mental retardation, the book examines the relative contributions of biomedical and intergenerational genetic factors as well as psychosocial adversity. The book should be of interest to a broad range of clinicians, researchers, and students, as well as the families of people with mental retardation, and it will serve as a model for future epidemiological and follow-up research.
