Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing in this war has so struck those who have fought in it as its impersonal nature. From the day the British Army moved north, and the first battle of Ypres commenced—and with it trench warfare as we know it now—it has been, save for a few interludes, a contest between automatons, backed by every known scientific device. Personal rancour against the opposing automatons separated by twenty or thirty yards of smelling mud—who stew in the same discomfort as yourself—is apt to give way to an acute animosity against life in general, and the accursed fate in particular which so foolishly decided your sex at birth. But, though rare, there have been cases of isolated encounters, where men—with the blood running hot in their veins—have got down to hand-grips, and grappling backwards and forwards in some cellar or dugout, have fought to the death, man to man, as of old. Such a case has recently come to my knowledge, a case at once bizarre and unique: a case where the much-exercised arm of coincidence showed its muscles to a remarkable degree. Only quite lately have I found out all the facts, and now at Dick O'Rourke's special request I am putting them on paper. True, they are intended to reach the eyes of one particular person, but ... the personal column in the Timesinterests others besides the lady in the magenta skirt, who will eat a banana at 3.30 daily by the Marble Arch! And now, at the very outset of my labours, I find myself—to my great alarm—committed to the placing on paper of a love scene. O'Rourke insists upon it: he says the whole thing will fall flat if I don't put it in; he promises that he will supply the local colour. In advance I apologise: my own love affairs are sufficiently trying without endeavouring to describe his—and with that, here goes. I will lift my curtain on the principals of this little drama, and open the scene at Ciro's in London. On the evening of April 21st, 1915, in the corner of that delectable resort, farthest away from the coon band, sat Dickie O'Rourke. That afternoon he had steppedfrom the boat at Folkestone on seven days' leave, and now in the boiled shirt of respectability he once again smelled the smell of London. With him was a girl. I have never seen her, but from his description I cannot think that I have lived until this oversight is rectified. Moreover, my lady, as this is written especially for your benefit, I hereby warn you that I propose to remedy my omission as soon as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Utah in the World War: The Men Behind the Guns and the Men and Women Behind the Men Behind the Guns In the preparation of a memorial book for a limited edition to be distributed among the heads of the several councils and committees who directed the activities of the army of civilians with-out whose Whole-hearted services mere fight ing would have been useless, it has been deemed desirable to curtail particulars of transient or purely personal interest and present a general outline of wartime conditions, opera tions and issues as they affected the people of Utah. To follow the movements of enlisted men from this state would be to write a history of the war during a dreadful year and a half of incessant fighting, for there were Utah boys among the Allies on every front and in almost every battle after we got fairly started. Any satisfactory account of their military exploits would require many such volumes and must be left to the future. This record has no such pre tentions aim. The information it is intended to preserve has been condensed in order to print, for the first time, a bare list of those who wore the uniform, while a register of all who served faithfully with'out uniforms would be at least as long again. Book Synopsis Dangers and Duties by : Dudley Ward Rhodes

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dangers and Duties: Talks to Men and Women "Shot your guns," said Napoleon as he stood on the gates of the Tuileries and saw the Directory's batteries firing blank-cartridges into the swarming ranks of the insurrectionists. "Shot your guns," is the most important thing for the pulpit to learn to-day. We need more definite, practical, personal attack upon the evils and dangers of to-day. Men do not care to listen to preaching which is only a feeble echo of the words which moved the world in the days of the Schoolmen. That world has passed away. "All things have become new." The ministry is naturally conservative. It must cling to its institutions and organization by the necessity of its creed. But while it must forever fight a wild radicalism, it ought to fight it with the most recent and effective weapons. There is a mighty chasm between Hastings, fought with bow and arrow, and Sedan, with mitrailleuse and needle-gun, and there ought to be as much change in the arsenal of the pulpit. We must change our methods. We must interest men by preaching to them as sensibly and practically and wisely as men talk to them in business and in politics, as lawyers talk to juries. Book excerpt: "What does it feel like to be shelled?" she demanded. "Explain it to me." Under the influence of my deceased uncle's most excellent port I did so. Soothed and in that expansive frame of mind induced by the old and bold, I drew her a picture-vivid, startling, wonderful. And when I had finished, the dear old lady looked at me. "Dreadful!" she murmured. "Did I ever tell you of the terrible experience I had on the front at Eastbourne, when my bath-chair attendant became inebriated and upset me?" Slowly and sorrowfully I finished the decanter-and went to bed. But seriously, my masters, it is a hard thing that my aunt asked of me. There are many things worse than shelling-the tea-party you find in progress on your arrival on leave; the utterances of war experts; the non-arrival of the whisky from England. But all of those can be imagined by people who have not suffered; they have a standard, a measure of comparison. Shelling-no. The explosion of a howitzer shell near you is a definite, actual fact-which is unlike any other fact in the world, except the explosion of another howitzer shell still nearer. Many have attempted to describe the noise it makes as the most explainable part about it. And then you're no wiser.

Download or read book Gun Women written by Mary Zeiss Stange and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, we are told, should not own guns. Women, we are told, are more likely to be injured by their own guns than to fend off an attack themselves. This "fact" is rooted in a fundamental assumption of female weakness and vulnerability. Why should a woman not be every bit as capable as a man of using a firearm in self-defense? And yet the reality is that millions of American women--somewhere between 11,000,000 and 17,000,000--use guns confidently and competently every day. Women are hunting, using firearms in their work as policewomen and in the military, shooting for sport, and arming themselves for personal security in ever-increasing numbers. What motivates women to possess firearms? What is their relationship to their guns? And who exactly are these women? Crucially, can a woman be a gun-owner and a feminist too? Women's growing tendency to arm themselves has in recent years been political fodder for both the right and the left. Female gun owners are frequently painted as "trying to be like men" (the conservative perspective) or "capitulating to patriarchal ideas about power" (the liberal critique). Eschewing the polar extremes in the heated debate over gun ownership and gun control, and linking firearms and feminism in novel fashion, Mary Zeiss Stange and Carol K. Oyster here cut through the rhetoric to paint a precise and unflinching account of America's gun women.
