Book Synopsis The Conservation of Cave 85 at the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang by : Neville Agnew

This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mogao Grottoes, a World Heritage Site in northwestern China, are located along the ancient caravan routes—collectively known as the Silk Road—that once linked China with the West. Founded by a Buddhist monk in the late fourth century, Mogao flourished over the following millennium, as monks, local rulers, and travelers commissioned hundreds of cave temples cut into a mile-long rock cliff and adorned them with vibrant murals. More than 490 decorated grottoes remain, containing thousands of sculptures and some 45,000 square meters of wall paintings, making Mogao one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. In 1997 the Getty Conservation Institute, which had been working with the Dunhuang Academy since 1989, began a case study using the Late–Tang dynasty Cave 85 to develop a methodology that would stabilize the deteriorating wall paintings. This abundantly illustrated volume is the definitive report on the project, which was completed in 2010.
Book Synopsis Cave Temples of Mogao at Dunhuang by : Roderick Whitfield
Download or read book Cave Temples of Mogao at Dunhuang written by Roderick Whitfield and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mogao grottoes in China, situated near the town of Dunhuang on the fabled Silk Road, constitute one of the world’s most significant sites of Buddhist art. The hundreds of caves carved into rock cliffs at the edge of the Gobi desert preserve one thousand years of exquisite art. Founded by Buddhist monks as an isolated monastery in the late fourth century, Mogao evolved into an artistic and spiritual mecca whose renown extended from the Chinese capital to the Western Kingdoms of the Silk Road. Among its treasures are miles of stunning wall paintings, more than two thousand statues, magnificent works on silk and paper, and thousands of ancient manuscripts, such as sutras, poems, and prayer sheets. In this new expanded edition, Cave Temples of Mogao at Dunhuang, first published in 2000, combines lavish color photographs of the caves and their art with the fascinating history of the Silk Road to create a vivid portrait of this remarkable site. Chapters narrate the development of Dunhuang and the Mogao cave temples, the iconography of the wall paintings, and the extraordinary story of the rare manuscripts—including the oldest printed book in existence, a ninth-century copy of the Diamond Sutra. The book also discusses the collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and Chinese authorities in conservation projects at Mogao, and the ways in which the site can be visited today.

Book excerpt: “A true classic of world literature . . . A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.” —Barack Obama “African literature is incomplete and unthinkable without the works of Chinua Achebe.” —Toni Morrison Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Things Fall Apart is the first of three novels in Chinua Achebe's critically acclaimed African Trilogy. It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent. Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political andreligious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order. With more than 20 million copies sold and translated into fifty-seven languages, Things Fall Apart provides one of the most illuminating and permanent monuments to African experience. Achebe does not only capture life in a pre-colonial African village, he conveys the tragedy of the loss of that world while broadening our understanding of our contemporary realities.

Ayla has been chosen as an acolyte to a spiritual leader and begins arduous training tasks. Whatever obstacles she faces, Ayla finds inventive ways to lessen the difficulties of daily life, searching for wild edibles to make meals and experimenting with techniques to ease the long journeys the Zelandonii must take while honing her skills as a healer and a leader. And there are the Sacred Caves that Ayla’s mentor takes her to see. They are filled with remarkable paintings of mammoths, lions, and bears, and their mystical aura at times overwhelms Ayla. Book Synopsis Understanding Revelation by : Wesley Cole
Download or read book Understanding Revelation written by Wesley Cole and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about life and death, conflict and war, courage and faith, heaven and hell. Gods purpose in having the book of Revelation written was because God wanted the servants of Jesus Christ to understand what is going to take place. He tells us when these things begin they will take place quickly. God so desires us to have this information that He promises to bless all those who will read and heed the book of Revelation. This book foretells of an apostasy and how the restrainer of lawlessness is removed. How the city of Babylon rises to prominence. What transpires to bring about the demise of Hamas, Hesbollah, the Palestinian resistance and Israels takeover of Jordan. It tells about a prosperous Israel at peace until invaded by a coalition of countries. It reveals how the antichrist comes to power and how he influences the world. It tells us about two of Gods witnesses who are killed and then come back to life. It tells us how God will rescue the Jews from Satans plan to annihilate them. It tells us what will happen before and after the rapture. This book has over 60 events in chronological order that must take place before Jesus institutes a new government and begins His reign as King of kings for a thousand years. This is a book about Jesus Christ. In it He tells us what He likes and dislikes about the churches. He tells us about rewards He has for us and what must be overcome to insure we have eternal life. But most of the book deals with coming events that must take place before He returns.
