Book excerpt: When Marvin decides that his beloved, aging Auntie Stephanie appears to be losing her marbles, he checks her into the Peaceful Pastures Assisted Living Complex in a small, tired Iowa town, circa 2035, and considers the chapter closed. But he soon learns that a nonagenarian named Rotzinger, the last surviving Cotta man and a former football hero at a defunct local college, is also braving his golden years in that facility. Cotta House was a bastion of male values and 1960s political incorrectness, and Rotzinger still is. So an oddball triangle is formed as Rotz reverently recalls his glory days to Marv and Steph, subsequently elevating them to a higher, albeit crackpot, plane of consciousness through the furball power of his world view, while the trio careens to the most improbable of climaxes. Men of Cotta is a book which will on occasion compel the reader to decide whether to take several moments to sit back and revel in the sheer absurdity of it all, or turn the page in search of the next outrage.

Book excerpt: Competition motivates men. And scientific research proves that competition and rewards motivate people to stick to exercise and diets. Former Los Angeles Lakers strength coach Jim Cotta harnesses men's passion for one-upmanship with an innovative get-in-shape program in Men's Health Workout War. This book features a highly effective, 60-day exercise and diet program broken up into quarters and an overtime round. The unique hook is that it makes the fitness instruction much more effective by turning it into a friendly weight-loss war that uses locker-room-style trash talking and cash prizes to drive dramatic results. Basketball great Shaquille O'Neal, who penned the book's foreword, used a "shirts off" competition against Charles Barkley on national television to spur his own body transformation, and Cotta was his weight-loss coach. That gave Cotta the idea to build a blueprint for grassroots fitness competitions, complete with multiple contest formats and advice on using social media to build excitement.

Download or read book The Terracotta Army written by John Man and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Terracotta Army is one of the greatest, and most famous, archaeological discoveries of all time. 6,000 life-size figures of warriors and horses were interred in the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of China - each is individually carved, and they are thought to represent real members of the emperor's army. This is the remarkable story of their creation, the man who ordered them made, their rediscovery and their continuing legacy as a pre-eminent symbol of Chinese greatness. The First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was king of the Chinese state of Qin and the first man to unite China into a single empire. He built the first Great Wall and brought a single written script to the whole country. He was an inspired and ruthless ruler, but one also beset by paranoia and a desire for immortality. He is still considered the founding father of the modern state of China. On his death in 210 BC he was buried in a giant mausoleum near modern-day Xi'an. Legends of the treasures contained therein still tantalize the imagination today. In 1974 local farmers digging a well for water broke through into the burial mound and found the first of the Terracotta warriors. Further excavations have revealed the full splendour of the buried army. But the majority of the mausoleum is yet to be opened, including the burial chamber itself - myth tells us that amongst the treasures yet to be uncovered is a vast map of the First Emperor's kingdom with rivers marked with channels of flowing mercury. The story of the First Emperor and the Terracotta Army is a fascinating one, not least for the discoveries yet to be made.

Download or read book America at War written by A. B. Feuer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-07-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using previously unpublished diaries, letters, and photographs—plus the writings of war correspondent John T. McCutcheon—Feuer offers a vivid account of America's war in the Philippine Islands during the early part of the 20th century. This story highlights the experiences of the American soldiers, sailors, and marines who participated in the major battles. Not only did they fight a determined enemy, they also battled the weather, the jungle, and the diseases that threatened to take their lives. Their writings, including a section of poems and songs of the era, reveal the thoughts and anxieties of the American fighting man, serving his country nearly 8,000 miles from home. In 1895 Emilio Aguinaldo became the leader of Katipunan, a revolutionary society that sought complete independence from Spain. A year later, his ragtag band of soldiers defeated a Spanish regiment, a victory that incited the Filipino people to rise up against their oppressors. While the Spanish ultimately paid Aguinaldo to enter voluntary exile, in 1898, after the sinking of the ^IMaine^R, the United States would promise independence for the islands in exchange for Aguinaldo's return to lead an uprising against Spain. The U.S. State Department would later repudiate this promise, a move that would embroil United States troops in a bloody struggle to subdue the islands. This is their story.
