Book excerpt: Mere weeks after moving into her unique one-bedroom apartment on a bluff overlooking Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, Adelia is confronted by an old man reveals a mystery for which he can remember only two details. He wants to know what has been done to find a valuable locket lost in the building sometime in the distant past. In Memories Will Always Linger, Elizabeth Tidwell brings a fresh style to mystery and historical writings. Using primary dialogue, she weaves a tale of one of Virginia’s more famous post-Civil War families, the Langhornes, with the people and events of the building on the bluff. Cameo characters of the tale include presidents, diplomats’ daughters, a dictator’s son, and movie stars interacting with everyday students and staff of a prominent girls’ prep school, a corrections department academy and a few ghosts. Each chapter is rich with the history of a crucial time in the site’s existence and how the area’s inhabitants are affected. Separate introductions for each chapter chronicle Adelia’s encounters with the old man or the changes in perspective as her fascination and time investment deepen. So organized, there are two surprise endings. Even the author was shocked by the locket’s final resting place.

Book excerpt: JUST DOING MY JOB is a journey into the lives of the men and women behind the uniform – the cops, firies and ambos. It is an exploration of humanity and the human spirit. Imagine what it must be like to attend a fatal accident in which you know the victim; or to pull a baby out of a fire who is dressed in the same style of pyjamas that your child wears; or to have to knock on a stranger’s door and tell a wife that her husband has been murdered, while in the background, her children are preparing for a slumber party. You may be called on to deliver a child or to help a family cope with the disappearance of a beloved son. At other times a day at work may find you chasing a naked man through a five-star resort; being escorted through a seedy establishment by a six-foot-four transvestite; or assisting a drunken woman who has somehow fallen into a shopping trolley and become stuck. Every day there is a possibility of being shot at, spat at, punched, verbally abused, or hugged and cheered ... The diversity of situations and emotions is surely as great as any person in any line of work ever experiences. JUST DOING MY JOB tells the stories of the unsung heroes of our emergency services. Those who are just doing their job, protecting us, saving us, serving us. Most of us see nothing more than the uniform. These are snapshots of lives and events that will give the reader a better understanding of the men and women behind the uniform.

Book excerpt: About the Book: ‘Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words’ - Robert Frost. It is not without a reason that humans call the best of everything ‘poetry’. In the famous romance novel, The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, the hero calls his lover a ‘living poem’. Likewise, our best literature (irrespective of its form), movies, arts, places, food, and even wine is called ‘poetic’. No matter how scientifically advanced or technologically sophisticated we get, humans will always read and write poetry to express their emotions and feelings. We don’t read and write poetry because it’s fancy. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, and engineering are noble pursuits necessary to sustain life. Poetry, beauty, romance and love make this life worth living. With immense pride and joy that the entire team at StoryMirror selected, edited, compiled, designed, printed and published this beautiful collection of poems, “Surreal Moments”. The poets who co-authored this anthology come from different walks of life. Their age, gender, profession, qualification, theme and genre might differ, but all of them have brought their emotions, imagination, passion and life experiences to these poems. These poems are sure to strike a chord, touch your heart and soothe your soul. Hope you have a great reading experience!

This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthias Smalbrugge compares modern images to plays without a script: while they appear to refer to a deeper identity or reality, it is ultimately the image itself that truly matters. He argues that our modern society of images is the product of a destructive tendency in the Christian notion of the image in general, and Augustine of Hippo's in particular. This insight enables him to decode our current 'scripts' of image. As we live in an increasingly visual culture, we are constantly confronted with images that seem to exist without a deeper identity or reality – but did this referential character really get lost over time? Smalbrugge first explores the roots of the modern image by analysing imagery, what it represents, and its moral state within the framework of Platonic philosophy. He then moves to the Augustinian heritage, in particular the Soliloquies, the Confessions and the Trinity, where he finds valuable insights into images and memory. He explores within the trinitarian framework the crossroads of a theology of grace and a theology based on Neoplatonic views. Smalbrugge ultimately answers two questions: what happened to the referential character of the image, and can it be recovered?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zacharias Harker is a brilliant botanist and an aging recluse. Haunted by his mistakes and living without his wife and daughter for the past twenty years, he hatches the idea to write his magnum opus, a book on the implications of climate change for humanity focused on the wildflowers of Utah's Wasatch Mountains. Just prior to the tragedy of 9/11, he hires a young artist, Alba, to paint flowers for the book. Over the course of their unlikely friendship, Harker convinces Alba to return to Chile to learn the story, long hidden from her by her mother, of her father's disappearance under Pinochet. Alba's discovery of her family history and her experience listening to the stories of Chileans who have resisted a government ruled by fear inspire her return to Utah with renewed purpose. As America grows more distrusting of immigration and diversity, Alba commits her art to the protection of the environment and to a more inclusive meaning of family and belonging while she and her husband, John, strive to learn Harker's hidden past and include him in their lives before it is too late. Rooted in the Mormon heritage of Utah but hemispheric in its reach, American Fork is a story of restoration and healing in the wake of loss and betrayal.
