Book Synopsis Theatres of Memory by : Raphael Samuel
Download or read book Theatres of Memory written by Raphael Samuel and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Theatres of Memory was first published in 1994, it transformed the debate about what is to be considered history and questioned the role of “heritage” that lies at the heart of every Western nation’s obsession with the past. Today, in the age of Downton Abbey and Mad Men, we are once again conjuring historical fictions to make sense of our everyday lives. In this remarkable book, Samuel looks at the many different ways we use the “unofficial knowledge” of the past. Considering such varied areas as the fashion for “retrofitting,” the rise of family history, the joys of collecting old photographs, the allure of reenactment societies and televised adaptations of Dickens, Samuel transforms our understanding of the uses of history. He shows us that history is a living practice, something constantly being reassessed in the world around us.
Book Synopsis Victorian Marriage by : James Covert
Download or read book Victorian Marriage written by James Covert and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandell Creighton (1843-1901) was a famous historian and the first editor of the English Historical Review. His intelligence and energy made an impression upon everyone he met. Admired by Queen Victoria, only his untimely death stopped him becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. His wife Louise (1850 -1936) was a prolific historian in her own right. Her strength of character and organisational ability made her a natural leader of Victorian women's movements. The writings of this remarkable couple, especially their letters, reveal their relationships with each other and with their seven children, their work and home life, their servants, houses, holidays in Italy, and the pleasures of their lives together.
Book Synopsis Reimagining the Historian in Victorian England by : Elise Garritzen
Download or read book Reimagining the Historian in Victorian England written by Elise Garritzen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-09 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the transformation of history from a Romantic literary pursuit into a modern academic discipline during the second half of the nineteenth century, and shows how this change inspired Victorians to reconsider what it meant to be a historian. This reconceptualization of the ‘historian’ lies at the heart of this book as it explores how historians strove to forge themselves a collective scholarly persona that reflected and legitimised their new disciplinary status and gave them authority to speak on behalf of the past. The author argues that historians used the persona as a replacement for missing institutional structures, and converted book parts to a sphere where they could mould and perform their persona. By ascribing agency to titles, footnotes, running heads, typography, cover design, size, and other paratexts, the book makes an important shift in the way we perceive the formation of modern disciplines. By combining the persona and paratexts, it offers a novel approach to themes that have enjoyed great interest in the history of science. It examines, for example, the role which epistemic and moral virtues held in the Victorian society and scholarly culture, the social organization and hierarchies of scholarly communities, the management of scholarly reputations, the commercialization of knowledge, and the relationship between the persona and the underpinning social, political, economic, and cultural structures and hierarchies. Making a significant contribution to persona studies, it provides new insights for scholars interested in the history of humanities, science, and knowledge; book history; and Victorian culture.

Asquith chose him for the bishopric of Lincoln after a long ministry in the slums of Salford and he stood out among the bishops of his time for his radical opinions. Book Synopsis Reform and Its Complexities in Modern Britain by : Bruce Kinzer
Download or read book Reform and Its Complexities in Modern Britain written by Bruce Kinzer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, taken together, span the era of British history from 1780 to the present that has engrossed the attention of Brian Harrison in a career of more than fifty years. In keeping with his diverse interests, they vary widely in subject matter. Yet each contributes, in some fashion, to an appreciation of the complexities of reform in modern Britain. Throughout his career Harrison has demonstrated an unwavering interest in social movements and pressure groups. He has analysed the organisation of reform movements and their bases of support; explored the aspirations and beliefs motivating individuals to start or join such movements; and examined the ideas and ideals shaping their conception of human improvement. No one has done more to show that the significance of a reform movement's triumphs and disappointments can be grasped only in relation to the forces amassed to resist its claims. The essays gathered here, on the Harrisonian theme of reform and its complexities, form an acknowledgment of the massive mark their honouree has made on the study of modern British history. They are preceded by a Foreword composed by Keith Thomas and an editorial Introduction tracing the course of Harrison's scholarship and connecting that scholarship to the substance of the essays. The volume encompasses both wide-ranging analytical investigations and telling case studies. All have new things to say on the subject of reform and its complexities in modern Britain.

The book examines the histories of gender, knowledge, families, bodies, art, and political thought in Victorian Britain, contributing to both literary studies and cross-disciplinary feminist scholarship. Book Synopsis A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting by : Leo Ruickbie
Download or read book A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting written by Leo Ruickbie and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an upsurge in books, television programmes, films and websites exploring the reality or otherwise of the spirit world. Not since the founding of The Ghost Club in 1862 and the Society for Psychical Research in 1882 has ghost hunting been so popular. Television and the internet, in particular, have fueled this new level of interest, creating a modern media phenomenon that spans the globe. But while the demand for information is high, good information remains scarce. A Brief Guide to Ghost Hunting leads us through the process of ghost hunting, from initially weighing the first report, to choosing equipment, and investigating and identifying the phenomena, with an analysis of the best places to go looking, methods of contacting the spirit world, how to explain paranormal activity and, crucially, how to survive the encounter. However, it is also a book about ghost hunting itself, drawing on 130 years of research in the cavernous archives of the Society for Psychical Research and even older history to find the earliest ghost stories. A Ghost Hunting Survey makes use of interviews with those billing themselves as ghost hunters to find out their views, motivations and experiences. New and original research makes use of statistics to map the nebulous world of apparitions while a Preliminary Survey of Hauntings offers an analysis of 923 reported phenomena from 263 locations across the UK. This is, as far as possible, an objective presentation of ghosts and ghost hunting. It is no wonder that mainstream science largely refuses to deal with the subject: it is too complicated. Without trying to convince you of any viewpoint, this book is intended to help you understand more.

Book Synopsis A Study of George Orwell by : Christopher Hollis
Download or read book A Study of George Orwell written by Christopher Hollis and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Christopher Hollis knew George Orwell personally during his schooldays at Eton, afterwards in Burma, and at the end of his life. His study of Orwell’s books is therefore illuminated by some anecdotes of reminiscence. However, it is important to note that this book is primarily a study rather than a biography. Hollis examines Orwell’s books in order and traces through them the development of this unmatched literary giant’s thought process. From the experiences described in Down and Out in Paris and London to the points in his life that began driving him toward socialism, A Study of George Orwell is a comprehensive overview of Orwell’s work as it related to his personal life. Hollis guides the reader all the way through Orwell’s oeuvre, including his two most famous books—Animal Farm and 1984—which are, arguably, the greatest literary protests of political power and tyranny ever penned. Portraying Orwell as a fearless champion of the common man and a follower in the footsteps of Jonathan Swift, Hollis offers a compelling review and analysis of Orwell’s work as well as a perspective not found by the average, distant biographer
