He lived in Washington, D.C., during the Second World War and served in the US Army. He remained an Army Reservist until his retirement. It was in Washington that he met and married his wife of over sixty-five years, Florence (nicknamed Danny). He and Danny later moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where they have lived for most of their lives and where Jim was a Professor of Political Science at Kansas University for over forty years. Jim and Danny have traveled extensively and lived for short periods in Japan, Pakistan, Costa Rica, and Poland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Score Years and a Bit More represents an autobiographical view of the author's life and some of the social influences that affected it. After some thirty six years of teaching, conscientiously doing a job the author loved he was dumped by Somerset County Council, as part of a political intrigue to boost the egotism of a political cabal always wishing to ‘make changes’ in the interest of political ideals, irrespective of the upheaval it causes to the lives of their constituents. Finding he was at a loose end Bev decided to set down his memories whilst he could remember them and was delighted to find that the more he wrote the more he remembered...

This book was released on 2016-03-05 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memories described in this book reflect not only how eleven American Presidents remembered what happened to them in their youth, but also provide a glimpse into their beliefs, attitudes, thoughts and feelings. These childhood memories can foreshadow historical events during a President's administration even though such events are separated by time and place. By examining the early memories of the Presidents, it is possible to discover how, for example: Abraham Lincoln's amusing memory of a boyhood caper provided an unusual perspective on his character and his lasting appeal as a great storyteller; how Ulysses S. Grant's memory of a business transaction revealed a hidden vulnerability; and how Dwight David Eisenhower's memory of battling with a barnyard goose influenced his negotiating style as a General and President. These and other Presidential memories provide both telling and entertaining insights into the minds and actions of our American leaders.

Book Synopsis The Collective Memory Reader by : Jeffrey K. Olick
Download or read book The Collective Memory Reader written by Jeffrey K. Olick and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades, there are few concepts that have rivaled "collective memory" for attention in the humanities and social sciences. Indeed, use of the term has extended far beyond scholarship to the realm of politics and journalism, where it has appeared in speeches at the centers of power and on the front pages of the world's leading newspapers. Seen by scholars in numerous fields as a hallmark characteristic of our age, an idea crucial for understanding our present social, political, and cultural conditions, collective memory now guides inquiries into diverse, though connected, phenomena. Nevertheless, there remains a great deal of confusion about the meaning, origin, and implication of the term and the field of inquiry it underwrites. The Collective Memory Reader presents, organizes, and evaluates past work and contemporary contributions on collective memory. Combining seminal texts, hard-to-find classics, previously untranslated references, and contemporary landmarks, it will serve as a key reference in the field. In addition to a thorough introduction, which outlines a useful past for contemporary memory studies, The Collective Memory Reader includes five sections-Precursors and Classics; History, Memory, and Identity; Power, Politics, and Contestation; Media and Modes of Transmission; Memory, Justice, and the Contemporary Epoch-comprising ninety-one texts. A short editorial essay introduces each of the sections, while brief capsules frame each of the selected texts. An indispensable guide, The Collective Memory Reader is at once a definitive entry point into the field for students and an essential resource for scholars.

This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, Alon Kadish’s study re-examines the standard view held by historians of economic thought whereby economic history emerged from the historicist criticism of neoclassical economic theory. He also demonstrates how the discipline evolved as an extension of the study of history. The study will appeal to students and scholars in historiography, the development of higher education and in the history if economic thought in general, as well as all those interested in the evolution of Oxford and Cambridge.
