The rural South was one of the last strongholds of the traditional "granny" midwife. Whether she came by her trade through individual choice or inherited a practice from an older relative, a woman who accepted the "call" of midwife launched a lifelong vocation of public service. While the profession was arduous, it had numerous rewards. Midwives assumed positions of leadership within their communities, were able to define themselves and their actions on their own terms, and derived a great sense of pride and satisfaction from performing a much-loved job. Despite national statistics that placed midwives above all other attendants in low childbirth mortality, Florida's state health experts began in the early twentieth century to view the craft as a menace to public health. Efforts to regulate midwives through education and licensing were part of a long-term plan to replace them with modern medical and hospital services. Eager to demonstrate their good will and common interest, most midwives complied with the increasingly restrictive rules imposed by the state, unknowingly contributing to the demise of their own profession. The recent interest of the youthful middle class in home birth methods has been accompanied by a rediscovery of the midwife's craft. Yet the new midwifery represents the state's successful attainment of a long-awaited goal: the replacement of the traditional lay midwife with the modern nurse-midwife. Book excerpt: A very short book, "Mother and Child were Saved" features a translation of the memoirs that Frisian midwife, Catharina Schrader had written in the late 17th and the early 18th centuries. These were extracted from her notes that documented almost 3000 deliveries over the course of Schrader's career as a midwife. The memoir, exhibited around 100 of the most complicated that Schrader had helped with. These included both mother and child who had died, some where only the child died, some where one of a set of multiples lived, some where both lived happily. Though the essays and the introduction focus on the medical aspects of Schrader's career. The social aspect as a female midwife in a period of medicalized transition cannot be overlooked. One can see the burgeoning reticence emanate even from Schrader herself towards midwives who were incompetent and merely "tortured" their patients. However, this Memoir is integral for any study of midwifery in Europe during the early modern period. While the introductory essays could have been expanded to consider the social consequences of gender and midwifery, the fact that the Memoirs have been translated from their mix of three languages (Dutch, German and Frisian) into one ubiquitous language: English, gives the modern historian greater access to a primary source that details the travails and tribulations that women faced during this period that did not have the same kind of prenatal care that women see today. Ultimately, women faced with every birth, the possibility that they could die, and this memoir shows that there was a marked response to do anything they could to prevent that on the part of midwives and other obstetrical practitioners during this period. Regardless with the lack of exploration into the issues surrounding gender or the views of conception or any other number of paths that the essayists at the beginning could have explored, this work should be read by any historian that is considering gender in the early modern period.

I retired in 2003 as I was diagnosed with severe panic attacks. But the memories linger in my mind and heart, and I want to put them on paper in some fashion of organization to recall in my later years. Also the parents I lived with and delivered for will enjoy reading their story and sharing it with the baby born. I have lent my memories out to several friends for their opinions and they all said I didnt write enough, they wanted more to read. I hope those reading this book will feel the same way, find a Midwife who also delivered babies at home and pick their brains for stories unique to them. Every midwife has her own stories that will delight and intrigue you, ones no other Midwife has experienced. In the enclosed chapters I explain my desire of wanting to deliver babies at a time when hospital births were the norm, and my process of education to realize the dream. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing it down for you and for me. Love and affection to all my babies and their parents and extended families I was able to meet at such a precious time in their lives.
