Book excerpt: The author reminisces and shares events--some funny, some sad, and some heartwarming--that he experienced over his years of veterinary practice and life in LaGrange County, Indiana. The stories reveal how much he enjoyed living in a rural area, working as a veterinarian, raising a family, and spending time with animals, friends, colleagues and clients. He hopes the reader will enjoy reading about these memories as much as he did recounting them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To live a godly, peaceable life in this World, a Believer must be "filled" with the Holy Ghost and have the Fruit of the Spirit actively working in his personality. However, before he can possess these emotional qualities and grow spiritually, the "field" of his mind and emotions must be pruned, purged (during personal trials) and "cleansed" by the Word of God. Unfortunately, Satan is not just going to sit back and let this happen without putting up a fight, so he uses all kinds of sly, deceitful strategies to hinder or stop this process in our life. He systematically uses sin, unrestrained emotions and false teaching to "dig holes" in our health, character and personality. If we intend to reach the "more" and "much" fruit-bearing stages Jesus spoke about in John 15:2,5, you and I must strive to "catch" the foxes we see in our life before they destroy our vines! As we go through trials and tribulations, we must take advantage of every opportunity to gain more spiritual knowledge and understanding. The woman who was healed from the Issue of Blood understood what the "hem" of the priest's garment represented so, as a result, her knowledge + her need + her determination energized her faith and pushed it to a level that drew so much virtue out of Jesus that she received her Healing and He had to ask, "Who touched me?" When we understand the rudiments of the Word of God and understand the fundamental principles that support what we believe, it will energize our faith and maximize the level of what we receive from the Lord! Understanding is the key to growth and spiritual success!

Whether he's escaping the personal vendetta of a bull named Killer (I was a matador without a cape), entangled with a rabid cow, chasing a stallion (well, not quite, anymore...) through downtown Bangor, performing heart surgery in an arena, or having a close encounter?while airborne?with a B-52 bomber, this vet regards it all as part of a (long) working day.

Jack gasped as I hauled my OB bag and bucket over the fence."It just comes from growing up around them," I said. "I get surprised by one every once in a while, but most of the time, I know what they are going to do before they do it."In these real-life stories from forty years of veterinary practice in a small community in western Oregon, Dr. David E. Larsen captures the essence of daily life as a solo veterinary practice before the days of emergency clinics on every corner and specialty help within reach.Dave Larsen writes with equal respect and dedication about the animals he treats, all sizes, from bulls to mice, and of the life and death decisions their owners must make. He draws on the vast experience of his training, and applies the art of veterinary care that were taught to him by colleagues, many times lessening the tension in serious situations with subtle humor and providing needed education to grateful clients.

Book excerpt: They Have Feelings Too is a memorable journey into the world of veterinary practice. As a young man fresh out of the United States Navy, Howard Hansen has a decision to make. What is he going to do with the rest of his life? Howard takes you through the hallowed university halls and into the Cal Davis's Veterinary stables to give you a glimpse of real life veterinary medicine. What happens when a staff of veterinary student are unknowingly exposed to rabies? Go into the surgery lab for large animals and follow the doctors as they prepare a highly strung black stallion for orthopedic surgery. Learn about the massive hydraulic operating tables and be in attendance as the chief surgeon operates on the stallion to stabilize a knee fracture. The new graduate with Doctor Of Veterinary Medicine behind his name chooses the specialty of small animal medicine. He finds employment as a staff veterinarian in a busy two man practice in Los Gatos, California. Hansen is exposed to office politics for the first time and encounters the diverse personalities of the boss's domineering wife and the tottering aged father who acts a primary assistant. Howard decides to broaden his experience and moves to a large eight man practice in San Francisco. Diverse personalities abound as do conflicts. Day to day animal maladies are seen and treated. The occasional pet with an odd or truly strange injury as the two headed kitten and the convulsing falcon makes their way through the clinic's front door. Mistakes are made by veterinarians, and sometimes with hilarious results. The final episode of his career was his own one-man private practice. Howard moves his family to San Diego California where he purchases and successfully operates a veterinary hospital for 23 years. During his years of practice, Howard Hansen meets and introduces you to a wide spectrum of four legged, two legged and even a three legged amputee pets. He reminds us that not only the pets, but the owners too come in all sizes and shapes and personalities that run the gambit from normal to scary bikers with their attack dogs. This book exposes the reader to what really happen behind the doors of a veterinary clinic. If you ever wondered what was happening to your pet during treatment and wanted to be taken step by step through orthopedic surgery, learn how dangerous junk yard dogs are handled, and how rattlesnake bitten dogs saved, then this is a must read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving memoir of a life spent in the company of animals—a veterinarian sheds light on the universal experience of loving, healing, and losing our beloved pets, and the many ways they change our lives. The pursuit of a childhood dream has taken Suzy Fincham-Gray on a journey in veterinary medicine from pastoral farms on the English–Welsh border to emergency rooms in urban American animal hospitals, with thousands of stories collected along the way. In this unforgettable literary debut, she writes about some of the most emotionally challenging and rewarding cases of her career. Like many physicians, Fincham-Gray tends to see her patients at often life-or-death moments. While dramatic, these stories expand into deeper explorations of our complex, profound relationships with the animals in our lives. She describes the satisfaction of diagnosing and treating difficult diseases and the universal experience of loving a pet, and—inevitably—raises questions about their end-of-life care. We meet Grayling, an Irish wolfhound in need of critical treatment; we learn about the fulfillment of caring for a chronically ill pet from the story of Zeke, a silver-brown tabby cat who likes to eat just a little too much; and we fall in love with Monty and Emma, Fincham-Gray’s own adopted cat and dog, who change her life in joyful and unexpected ways. Fincham-Gray depicts the sleepless nights she spends waiting for her pager to call her to the clinic, the cutthroat competition among residents, and what it’s really like to care for patients who can’t advocate for themselves. Warm and humorous, Suzy Fincham-Gray is a rare breed—a clinician with an intimate, elegant literary style. She writes with the same tenderness she brings to her patients, whose needs she must meet with her mind, her hands, and her heart. “Suzy Fincham-Gray gives readers rare insight into the making of a compassionate doctor. Her passion for both science and the animals she cares for, combined with her eloquence as a writer, made me want Suzy as both my dogs’ veterinarian and my own friend.”—Teresa J. Rhyne, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Dog Lived (and So Will I)
